  1. I have the same problem, but I'll take temporary deafness any day of the week if I need help or get seperated from a hiking group.
  2. I would take exception the statement above. The assumption that if you get into trouble you can call for help is never a good one, caches with higher terrain ratings will often put you in places with no reception. However there is a very simple solution, bring a whistle. The human voice at best can be heard up to ¼ of a mile. However the whistles listed below are designed to be heard up to a mile away and because they don’t have a pea in them the harder you blow the louder they get. You can yell yourself hoarse very quickly, but you can blow a whistle as long as you have to. Bring your cell phone, but have a whistle as a back up. I carry one of these whistles when I go Geocaching and used to use one at work to signal coffee breaks. They are as loud as they claim to be. These whistles have an extremely shrill sound that stands out from all other noises. Whistle 1 Whistle 2 Whistle 3
  3. Sometimes you can make a regular item of signature item. There was a Geocacher who used to leave a rubber chicken in every cache he found. I leave an envelope with forgein coins with my name on it.
  4. At least they didn't make any references about searching for buried treasure.
  5. Someone I teach a class with has a PLB and a SPOT. He likes the SPOT better because of the checkin feature, it allows him to let people know where he is and that everything is on schedule. Where as the PLB is for in case of emergency only. If I was hiking on a regular basis I'd probably get a SPOT in spite of the overall cost to operate it every year.
  6. I couldn't agree with you more. I'd make the phone call.
  7. Exactly why you are misunderstood. Once again sarcasm is not going to help you educate anyone.
  8. What I am saying is that you are not the first person to show up on these boards with no experience or understanding of Geocaching and then attempt to "educate" us about what we do and do not know. If you want to learn more about Geocaching, go out and find some, stop hanging out in the forums. Come back when you have found 25 caches, preferably no micros, so you can have a real idea as to how and where Geocaches are hidden. There is no question as to why Geocaches sometimes get banned. As matter of fact it is clearly spelled out in the guidelines for hiding a cache, try reading them. Your not telling us anything new and you are coming off as preachy and sarcastic. You keep stating how we can accept what you say as fact or dismiss it as nonsense. But you dismiss everything that is said by people who have found Geocaches and work with land managers as nonsense.
  9. Since you cannot hear the tone of voice in a post, you cannot hear sarcasm. Here is an idea for you to use in the future, [sarcasm] Gosh Bordermonum we had no idea how Geocaching can impact an area, thank you for enlightening us. [/sarcasm] If you actually had some understanding of Geocaching sarcasm wouldn’t have been necessary. I did not claim that there was 100% coverage, you asked to identify the state and I gave the details. However if you understood that most Geocaches are placed 50’ to 100’ off of an existing trail, I would assume that the areas of land around the trails are well surveyed. I’m not sure what you intended with your experiment, but I get the sense you were trying to educate a group of people you thought were misinformed. You seem to give us no choice other than accept what you say or discard it as nonsense, but you seem to discard everything we say as nonsense. If you took the time learn about some of the people who post here regularly they include Geocachers who have worked with state and local agencies to create acceptable Geocaching policies, people who teach Geocaching classes for local parks and plan CITO’s on a regular basis, or work in similar jobs to yours. After seven years on these forums I can tell you that you are not the first person who has tried to educate us. They tend to give us facts based solely on their perspective, with limited if any Geocaching experience, and then get offended when anyone questions what they are saying. Kind of like seagulls at the beach, they show up, crap on you, make lots of squawking noises, and then fly off.
  10. So have you planned the baby shower event cache yet??
  11. Hmmm, I think using your image for commercial purposes without obtaining your permission might be a legitmate grounds for getting paid.
  12. Pennsyvania and specifically the state parks and state forests, which includes 117 state parks and 2.1 million acres of forests. Contrary to what you think many federal, state, and local agencies do the same. They have to, part of their job is knowing what resources are on their land and what needs to be protected. This is hardly a recent practice, certain technological improvments have made the process easier than inthe past. I think you are equally confused about the west. I've spent time in Nevada and I can assure you the BLM people at Red Rocks have a simialr inventory. I think you need to do more research about this before you make any more blanket statements about what agencies do to inventory their land.
  13. Oh my god, your having a WHAT??!! How did that happen??? To stunned to guess will try later when I can get over the shock of using the words "Avroair" and "responsible parent" in the same sentence.
  14. To go Geocaching with Mistuko or Carmen Electra, if either one of them is available.
  15. The guideline I have always used for swag is, if you found it in a cache would you trade for it. You can still find great swag for a dollar or two if you look around at the dollar bins in the big box stores.
  16. If your on an airplane check the inflight magazine for a list of electronics you can and can not use while in flight. Some airlines allow GPSes others do not. As for cruise lines check the website form similar information and bring a copy with you. Talking to customer serivce is no help when dealing with a shipboard employee. Remember it only counts if it is in writing.
  17. I just mark my Geocoins as "missing". They stay on my profile but off the list of travel bugs/Geocoins in my possession.
  18. Isn't there a virtual you can log only if you got a ticket from the police and you were Geocaching at the time?
  19. If your going to Las Vegas make sure to visit the Pioneer Saloon Cache.
  20. Close. What about "Up French Creek with a GPS", "Get lost in French Creek with a GPS"?
  21. One proviso, I don't speak French, so if you post a title in French please include the translation in English.
  22. I have a Geocaching class coming up in June and I am looking for a catchy name for the event cache. The name of the park is French Creek State Park. I have used titles like these in the past: Embrace and Huggle a Muggle April Fooling the Muggles ( It was held on April 1) Some of the names that have been suggested for this one have had a French theme, like: oui, oui, its behind the tree. Looking for ideas, thanks. It could even be in French.
  23. Perhaps its time to find a more user friendly location?
  24. At the babrbecue set up an ammo can for donations to help cover the cost of the food. I've seen it doneat other events and its an effective way to offset your costs.
