  1. As an end-user of Groundspeak, I am happy with all that is offered here. Certainly I am not one of the most active users of Groundspeak - probably some might consider me little more than a "lurker", but for my purposes Groundspeak serves me well. As I need more features and functionality, I will be happy to become a premium member. Thanks!
  2. Of course, when someone says, "Get the government to subsidize" something, they are referring to taxpayers paying to subsidize. Now if the government operated more like Groundspeak, citizens would pay less taxes and more in premium user fees for added services. You would pay for only that which you use, above the minimum that the federal government should provide. I like the Groundspeak model better than the federal government's model.
  3. To the extent that our taxes help support public radio, one might hold that listeners (and others) prop up...provide the means by which public radio is able to operate. So while the content is not created by listeners, it certainly is substantially sponsored by listening and non-listening taxpaying citizens.
  4. I have no idea where these quotes are coming from. Almost sound like a Clint Eastwood western...The Outlaw Josie Wales. But probably not... So let us know!
  5. I also have an etrex legend, bought it used. So far I haven't had any problems you mentioned. I have dropped it several times. I use the Duracell batteries, but I don't know if that's the difference. Thanks!
  6. Hey Cachers! I don't really have all that many posts, but I have barely been in the game. So I guess I am not a lurker, but perhaps a newbie...a neophyte. But I do use the forums a good deal. Rather than post questions which have already been asked many times before(I assume) and tie up the forums, I just mine through the forums until I find the answer to my questions. The FAQs have been a big help, as well. I sometimes just see things that peak my interest and go there, and have been surprised by what I have learned after "lurking." That's my story! And I am sticking to it! THIS TIME...I am being honest with you Happy caching to all! John
  7. I had a little trouble with mine, also. The interface with these things takes a little getting used to. I got started just fine, using the same directions as the others just listed. But I stumbles a bit when it came to the waypoint entry. I finally just used the book, practiced, found my 1st cache, practiced more, and so on. To enter coordinates, it's a combination of selecting the correct character from the "box" (highlight it by movin the black box over the character) then press down on the click stick. On the same table as the letters, there are numbers and "navigation" arrows < and > for example to move the cursor to the correct entry position. Also, you will see "space" and other text commands you can select. But it all starts by pushing down on the stick (you will see the man holding a flag). Then you use the stick to move the highlight to the first entry field, either the waypoint name, or the description (waypoint, attraction, etc.). Once you are "on top" of the correct field (first coordinate, for example) pres down and the text selection box appears (see directions above). When you are done with all fields and happy with your what you've entered, then move the highlight to "goto" box to begin navigation. You will make mistakes, but guess what? You can delete waypoints all day long! And then start over. If you need to speak in person, please PM me. Do you have the owner's manual? Let me know. Good luck and welcome to the game. I just logged my 6th (only) today.
  8. Boy, have I got a lot to learn! I guess I need to skip the geocaching quick start and go to Geocaching 101. I am just learning my way around a Garmin etrex legend. Looking at these posts just reminds me I have a long way to go. I will be stayin tuned in. Thanks for the guidance. John
  9. Actually, it says warning 0%, but the bar graph had me concerned! I think I'm OK. Still don't have your GPS, though. I am using someones' etrex legend. I am thinking of buying it. Are they decent units? From the boards I've seen, I think so. Would $75 to $100 be a decent offer? I appreciate your help. John
  10. Why is there a "warn" indicator under my name? Just wondering? Lol...I don't have the GPS, Rocky...honest!
  11. Rocky - Whereabouts in Charlotte? I am also from Charlotte, near to UNCC. Probably you had the gathering nearby at Wolfman Pizza, maybe? I am new to this and am looking for all the advice I can as I get started. Thanks! John
  12. I am just now learning about geocaching. It's too bad I missed your recent get together. I live about 10 minutes from the meeting location! Would have been an easy first find. NCCamper2003
