  1. Why ammo in a cache is bad. What will happen when the cache is caught in a fire such as the fires in AZ this year. One cache (Boo-Boo Bear's Cache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=6905) was recovered after the fire and although the ammo box was recognizable the contents where rather charred (see pictures). Had there been ammo in the can, there would have been some nice holes in it. Not really a problem unless your the firefighter standing near the cache. Team Sand Dollar
  2. I have requested that two caches be archived. The first was through the owner. I informed him that the cache was located in a live electrical box with exposed wires. He thanked me and imediately removed the cache. With the second I also tried to contact the owner first but got no response. So I posted a should be archived. What was wrong with this cache. 1) posted private property 2) abandoned waste treatment facility with open covers and grates plus lots of rust and stagnant water. This second site clearly violates what little rules geocahing does follow. I have no problems with difficult caches, just illegal placements and unneccessary danger. With over 600 finds I have seen all sorts of caches, and I willing to bend the rules. These caches just went too far. As a note: The hider of the first cache was an experienced cacher whom placed the cache at night and missed the exposed wires. Once alerted to the problem he took care of the problem. The hider of the second cache has only 2 finds and one hide and could not be bothered to respond. I took the action I did as a last resort. It is up to all of us to monitor this sport and suggest corrections when needed. If not, someone will try and force there rules on all of us. Team Sand Dollar
  3. I put live ammo in the same class as used golf balls. Would any intelligent gun owner really use ammo that they found in a cache. I've come across a couple of caches that had some rounds in them and if I do in the future I will just remove them like I do with lighters (another well thought out cache item). Team Sand Dollar
  4. When we first started geocaching my wife opened the account as "L" even though we logged our finds as Team Sand Dollar. Later I just changed the name on the site and all my finds changed automatically. As said earlier it is probally just an effect of the new changes to geocaching.com. Team Sand Dollar
  5. After you get more finds under your belt you won't worry about the few times you run into someone already at a cache. Just this week I've met two other cachers at two of the caches I went to. At one we teamed up to find the cache and at the other the person was writing there log. With the second cacher, we teamed up to locate another cache that they had no logged earlier. Being with others that also enjoy our game greatly outweighs being able to locate a cache on your own. Out of the 600+ I have found, I have run into other cachers less than 20 times, but every time was enjoyable. I have also gone out with other cachers which is very helpful when you don't want to go alone, or there Jeep can get you places you wouldn't want to take your own jeep. Mine is a standard 4WD Cherokee and the site required a good lift kit to get over some of the rocks. Team Sand Dollar

  7. How about 14 days 4/13/02 trough 4/26/02. And 16 days 5/19/02 through 6/3/02. What can I say, I was out of work and my wife did not want me around. Team Sand Dollar

  9. Having aquiring and keeping with permission one of Moun10Bike coins #71. #1 through #70 are traveler and I would not have kept them. I looked into creating my ownbut big problem I found was the average cost of the coins themselves. At $3+ each it would prove to costly to leave them as a signature item since I have found over 500 caches. My question is has any one found a place that could produce coins out of some lesser metal such as alumimum that would bring the cost down to around $1. My present signature item which is a small round tin with sand dollar or sand cookie inside with story cost me in this range to produce so switching to coins at this cost would be a wash. I will look into the clay poker chips. That might be a solution. Team Sand Dollar

  11. Ive got 583 finds and only one active hide. I'm not worried about it. Lets assume every geocacher had to to hide 1 cache for every 20 finds. There is an average of 100 finds each for 100 cachers in the area. So now there are 500 caches. You find more caches so now you have to hide more caches. As the Average goes up the number of hidden caches increase. So now the average is for the 100 cacher is 200 finds so now there should be 1000 caches. Do you get where I leading. Area saturation. As long as an area has enough caches every thing is fine. Let those who like to hide, hide and those that like to find, find. Team Sand Dollar
  12. I have a signature item I place in all caches I find or at least those that it will fit in. So I will usually leave something. My problem is with 580 plus finds I running out of room for the items I take. So if I don't see any thing I want I won't take anything. With the items I have taken I plan to reuse most of them in caches I place. Team Sand Dollar
  13. 8 hours and 40 minutes to hike just over 10 mile round trip going after Lost Ark cache in Phoenix Arizona. Got 3 teams together to go after this one and the first 4 miles are easy then up the side of a mountain with to trails and no straight shot for the last mile of the hike. Just a lot of cacti and loose rocks. The real queation was how did the guy haul that large ammo box with all that stuff up there in the first place. One of the items in the cache is a socket set. It still remains.
  14. I'm not concerned with what they are called. I just feel that they belong in there own section. I know this is not supposed to be a numbers game but locationless caches do tend to inflate a teams number of finds. I noticed today that one team has claimed 15 finds on the same location less cache on the same day. Just my thoughts. Team Sand Dollar
