The best part of traveling with travel bugs in your carry on bag is seeing the face of the airport screener. In most cases they do not say anything but one time, all the little metal tags and trinkets raised a curious eye. The screener asked what they were out of their curiousity not that there was anything that would be deemed dangerous. They thought it sounded like fun, I pulled out a couple and showed them, and then off I went. Just be careful the type of bugs you carry in your carry on that they meet the security requirements.

I was thinking the same thing .. do I just bring 4-5 coins to show .. and a few for trade purposes .. to keep to the smaller suitcase?

I have a cache very near my home that I will drop a travel bug into and pick up to show it is moving along. For example, I recently picked up travel bugs while in Texas, dropped and picked them into the cache near my home then actually left them in a cache Illinois. I just felt it shows the actual mileage and locations the bugs have traveled with me.

I am glad you like them. I will not pick them up from a cache due to the hassle but I will mention in my log that a traveler tag is in that cache. It is just too much hassle.

We have a related problem happening in our area. Someone is purposely removing the metal tracking tags from travel bugs. At this point, there is no one cache singled out, no one persons bugs - very random. I had dropped 5 bugs into a bug hotel and after 6 weeks when they had not moved, I went to swap them out so I could put them into a different cache. I found 2 of the 5 were now missing the metal tags. As I have the tracking number, I was able to log the bugs out of the cache and I then contacted the owners. It is now 2 months later - the owners have yet to return my repeated emails. I decided to just release the bugs with the tracking number and a note saying the tag had been removed. However, I also have a double problem - a bug owner not replying for a bug that we picked up minus the tag but we never had the bug so I do not have the tracking number. The cache owner has been inactive in our area plus. If I could get that bug at least marked to missing or if I could get the tracking number, I could log it out and move it along to another cache. I know what I have is the bug because we found a baggie, the travel bug goal sheet and the item described as the bug. If I can provide the GC for the cache and the number for the TB I have, can I get help with that? Yes, I do like moving travel bugs and helping with travel repairs! AuntieNae

Actually, the story started from an event I hosted on Jan. 21 - the Waukesha JanBoree Geocaching Style. We had news coverage by all the networks. Fox6 picked up on the story and I did a 1.75 hr interview last Friday morning followed by a 1 hour interview at our local REI followed by a 1 hour geocaching experience with the Ecoranger family. The news segment included bits and pieces from all three interviews. Yes, I teach "Intro to Geocaching" classes for the local Park & Recreation Depts since I am a Recreation Supervisor for the City of Greenfield. We thought they did a great job of really showing what Geocaching is and I am hoping to see even more beginners in the upcoming workshops. I do a PowerPoint presentation complete with a nice folder of handouts and resource materials. Afterwards, participants are paired up with experienced geocachers to seek a series of temporary caches that demonstrate different cache hides so they also get experience with different GPS units. I ask for the kids ages so we can stock at least one if not two of the caches with some nice goodies. If the classes are large, I am able to rent GPS units from a local school.
