  1. I have written firmware that blew all the fuses in the device (not GPS). It can be done if you know what you are doing and the hardware designers didn't.
  2. Interesting. No NuviPhone announcement yet. I was also hoping for an upgrade to the Forerunner 405 (without a stinking Touch Bezel), but that was probably fantasy on my part.
  3. Yes, but the 60CSX has comparatively strict limits on tracks. With the 60CSX you can get a maximum of 20 tracks with a maximum 500 trackpoints each. If you have a track that's longer it will get truncated and you loose detail. 20 truncated tracks with the 60CSX or virtually unlimited tracks with the Oregon. Redwoods is right about screen brightness and bikers. Tradeoffs; the perfect GPS will never exist. If you have an microSD card in the 60CSx, it will save the track log to the card using a new file name for each day. I don't think there is a 20 track limit for that. You are only restricted by the amount of space on the card. I mounted my Colorado on my handlebars and used it outside. The screen was quite readable.
  4. I am currently participating in a study funded by the DOT that is looking at one alternative to the current Gas tax. I have a GPS, Computer, and Cell Phone installed in my vehicle. It is all out of sight and works pretty well. I get a pretend monthly bill for my driving tax. If you think about it, this is truly the only way to fairly generate tax for upkeep of the roads we drive on. With alternative fuels, hybrids and even electric cars, the amount of tax generated by fuel purchases is not keeping up with the actual use of the roads.
  5. I liked tabbed browsing in Firefox. I think IE recently added it, but I had already converted to Firefox. I like the foxmarks extension that allows me to synchronize all of my bookmarks with all of my computers giving me the same set of bookmarks on any PC I use. It also seems like Firefox hangs much less frequently than IE.
  6. Maybe the Satellite page is non-compensated satellite elevation while the other elevation displays all represent the pressure compensated reading. Can anyone confirm this? It sounds plausible. I just checked G-O-Cashers Oregon Wiki. Altimiter-> A2 -> "The Satellite page which shows GPS elevation" That is it. Thanks.
  7. Why is the elevation on the Trip Computer 2452ft and the elevation on the Satellite Screen 2610ft? I can not understand why they are not the same. I did a manual calibration and that only affected the elevation on the Trip Computer (and the Elevation Plot screen). Anyone know? Is the number shown in the lower right corner of the circular satellite plot on the Satellite Screen not elevation? I am using Firmware 2.80
  8. I have had both a Colorado 400t and Oregon 400t. I like the Oregon better. Not a lot better, but better. I like the interface better. I like some of the features of the Oregon (turning off the screen with backlight for one). I think they are both nice units. I would choose the Oregon over the Colorado.
  9. The Nuviphone is the only rumor I have heard. It probably has been talked about for so long that it is no longer a rumor.
  10. SportTracks will do this. You can also "correct" the elevation by applying the topo data to the route. SportTracks will then calculate the ascent based on the topo elevation data instead. http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/
  11. I am a little confused about what you are trying to avoid. Most roads are not totally level. They all go up and down. You can't ride a loop, end up where you started and not ride up hill any less than you rode down hill. That being said, I configure my GPS to show me speed, distance and cadence. Those are the only parameters of a ride I can change. Elevation isn't something I usually look at until afterward...like this ride: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/696232
  12. The flash memory on the GPSr will become fragmented, but you don't need to de-fragment it. Why? Because it is not a mechanical device like a hard drive. There is no head that needs to seek data on defragmented blocks. The flash file system easily accounts for dispersed data. No matter where your data is, the read time will be just as fast. You will gain NO performance from defragmenting your GPSr. If you de-fragment you GPSr memory, you will effectively cause thousands of unnecessary erase/write cycles. This will wear down the memory much faster. Don't do it.
  13. Garmin Training Center is PC software. It is installed on the PC not on your device.
  14. Oh it's a known problem alright! But not just with the Colorados. The explanation I gave in this post applies equally to the Colorado. I don't know, but my speculation is bad data in City Navigator at those locations. I've heard of others getting the same thing, with other units. Thanks!
  15. I have noticed two strange things when routing with my Colorado. I can't figure out if I have a wrong setting or if this is a known problem. I have City Navigator North America NT 2009 on my PC and on my Colorado 400t with the latest firmware. 1) I create a route on my PC and download it to my Colorado. When I select the route to Navigate, the GPSr recalulates the route. Why? The whole purpose of downloading a route to the GPSr is so that the GPSr follows the route right? I just don't understand why it goes through a recalculation. 2) I have the route calculation set for fastest route. When driving on the Interstate/Freeway, Often times I am routed off the freeway and then immediately back on. Why? Have any of you Colorado owners suffered the same problems? -Keith
  16. Using Sporttracks, I was able to import my workout from my polar heart monitor and then import my workout track from my Garmin Colorado. Sometimes the time is a little off, but it wasn't too bad. That might get you started while you are waiting to get a Garmin heart monitor strap. I was very impressed with the Garmin heart monitor after I purchased one. Better resistance to interference than my Polar (at least where I run). No more 250 bpm heart rates.
  17. Only Garmin heart rate monitors work. The good thing is that all garmin heart rate monitors work with ALL of their devices that support heart rate data (same thing goes for speed/cadence sensors). Currently, you can use software called SportTracks to view your hear rate, speed, distance and GPS Location data. Check it out. It is pretty good stuff. SportTracks
  18. From my experience with the CO, direct sunlight easily overpowers the backlight.
  19. I hope we see some of the firmware differences make it over to the Colorado. When you set a profile you are also told the current profile Automatic time zone setting Track management is for real Geocaches now show up on the Recent Finds list. Screen brightness remembered across power cycles. etc.... By the way GO$, what happened to your Colorado? It looks cracked.
  20. Does the screen "lock" so you can put it in your pocket while it is turned on? How much available memory does the 400t have?
  21. Thanks for the responses. I will call Garmin when I receive my new unit and try to get the license transferred. Thanks.
  22. I want to sell my GPSr and move my purchased license to my new unit. Can this be done or do I have to purchase a new license. (City Navigator North America 2008). I am sure this is covered somewhere, but I just couldn't find it. Thanks, Keith
  23. North Dakota - Lots of real estate, but there isn't really anything there.
