  1. Was considering a trackable too, this give something to "report back on" at a later date.
  2. Thank you. Was considering a multi cache so I can place other parts within close proximity and not worrying about lengthy walks, if I criss-cross the area under consideration, each group shouldn't muggle the previous etc.
  3. Any helpful suggestions taken on the above. I have offered to take my sons cub group Geocaching. The intention is to place some new caches to go "live" just before we do them (so I know they are well stocked, clean etc.) Has anyone every done caching with a group of kids? How best to do it in a limited time (1.5 hours) and with limited GPS's available. Seemed like a good idea when I offered
  4. I'd leave it... lifes too short to be worried about such things.
  5. Will my sister-in-law be able to use this for geocaching? Any help appreciated.
  6. if you are satisfied with your current set up you really need to weight up the cost of a new gps unit versus the cost of your data usage while abroad. how much were you going to spend on a GPS? i'm sure whatever that figure is it amounts to an awful lot of data usage. but if you are looking for an excuse to buy a dedicated GPS, thats a different matter! i have never used a nokia e71 or trimble (does it need a fulltime data connection?) but you phone may have a flight mode which would switch of all comms or you could remove the sim which would prevent any comms. When I downloade the Trimble software, I couldn't get it to work on my E71? It also prompted for northern hemisphere lat/long? Maybe you can advise me now you've used it for a while? Ian Pass! I still use it if I am out and about without my Garmin and feel the urge for a quick cache and dash. It does need to be "online" so a data package is a must. It seems to work fine on mine, though as you say it uses different co-ords - but I just use the "search" feature rather than entering co-ords.
  7. I have progressed from Mobile phone to Garmin Etrex H and have started to get to grips with it. I assume that there is a lead that goes under the flap at the back and connects to the PC? A - where can I get one - Garmins own site seems not to have one? and B - what advantage does it give me? - Can I send Co-ords to the unit, edit their names???? Thanks in hope of a response. Steve
  8. I guess I am looking for you guys to provide me an excuse to buy one Using the phone can be tedious if signal is lost, and entering manual co-ordinates isn't easy. I use the Trimble thing when almost at the area to find "quick cache" which I have set to a 2 mile radius. It is good, but as it isn;t actually designed for my model, doesn;t work to its full potential. I imagine it would be better on an iphone. If I bought one, the Etrex seems the most likely.
  9. I currently use my mobile phone (Nokia E71) with Trimble's software. It isn't strictly supported, but with some minor menu button adjustments does work well. There are a couple of issues with this. Problem is, it has to go online, I do have plenty of Data allowance, but it gave me a problem recently when there was no signal. Also, I wouldn't want to do this whilst abroad (data would cost a fortune). So - because I have this option already, I cannot justify (to myself or the wife) buying an expensive GPS device. Would getting a bog standard Garmin give me any advantages over my current set up? Or does anyone know if I can use my mobile without it going "online"? Thanks in advance
  10. As another Newbie to this, can I add further questions. Currently I am using my Mobile Phone (Nokie E71) which works just fine, and I have "unlimited data" so doesn't cost me to use the geocaching software whilst out and about. 2 questions... when I go abroad, it would cost me a fortune to use - do I need to be "online" to use my phone as GPS??? Secondly, should I decide to get a GPS device, is there a good one that will also but useful whilst skiing (for speed, distance, altitude etc.)?
  11. As a newbie today, I hadn't even considered excuses etc... I will now go armed with tales (or just tell the truth). Got my first two today, which were fairly remote. Really must clean up my bike tomorrow - it was very muddy!
