  1. Can you flash spray 'em with shellac and use them for cache swag ???
  2. That is a great article and really sheds a nice light on the sport and the people who participate. However the first paragraph is a bit misleading right? The satellites aren't tracking us or watching us.... Our GPSrs are receiving signals from the satellites.... A minor point and I hate to be nit-picky, but paranoid or conspiracy-theory types might get a bit freaked out
  3. Haggeus.. Best wishes to you on your return home. It was a true pleasure to meet you at the recent event. You have some very interesting tales of caching and commuting around the Northeast region. When I read your logs, I am simply amazed that you could get to those locations using nothing but the transit system and your own two feet. Very, very impressive.... CZ caching will be far better now that Haggeus returns.... Please stay in touch !
  4. I finally posted my logs and photos.... Thanks again for a great day. I really enjoyed caching with you guys !!
  5. I was there among them also...... desperate men deep in the woods... searching for those elusive caches.....I know the real story about that dog....... for a price.... Seriously though.. that Travel bug is a riot !!!
  6. Congratulations Squealy !! It was a privilege to cache with you and be there for your 500th find....
  7. What can I say? This day was fantastic !! I really enjoyed caching with such a fine bunch of guys. It was great figuring out the trails to take, being part of the searching, and learning more about this great sport from such excellent cachers. Being part of Squealy's 500th on a challenging micro was also great. My only regret was that about 1/3 way into the day, my knee tweaked badly and I was really slowed down on many parts of the trek. (There was quite a bit of uphill, then downhill, then uphill again ) However, they were all quite patient and understanding, slowing down and waiting until I caught up. THANKS GUYS !! All in all a great day in a fantastic park with amazing views. You are right Brian..this is one of the secrets of North Jersey caching/hiking... I'll be posting logs and pictures later today..
  8. Brian, That's my latest understanding from Avro. BS lake between 9:15 - 9:30.
  9. Avro, Might one alternative be to leave one car at Glenwild and one at the Eco Center. This way we could first go to Assini and the View, work down to the Buck caches, Sierra and Osio. If we need to pack it in we're near one car. If we're still fresh, we can continue up to the Falls, Overlook, etc.. This way we have a car north and south... Just a thought...
  10. I'm about 90% confident that I will be able to go. Parking in the Ecology center does sound like a good idea...
  11. Those are good goals David... For me as still a relative newbie it would be.... 1. Go for a good cache series with a group. 2. Go for some "good hike" (Briansnat & Jonboy-type) caches with nice vistas. The NJ Forgotton cache series comes to mind.. 3. Grab a bunch of caches in areas where I like to vacation... The coast of Maine, coast of Rhode Island, the Berkshires, Virginia. 4. Get some of the straightforward caches that can be stops on the way home from work. 5. See how far I can stretch my lunch so I can cache mid-day... (Maybe that one isn't such a good idea) In any case, I look forward to definitely meeting my #1 goal of caching with a bunch of you guys and gals..
  12. Congrats to you Skigirl !! Tell your caching partner you want to go to a fine restaurant to celebrate !!
  13. I was amazed to find my knees hurting something fierce after my 8 mile Hudson Highland hike. It was exactly the same way... going downhill was quite painful. The pain was right under the kneecap and hurt mostly going downhill. I read somewhere about a non-arthritic knee condition that presents as knee pain especially when going downhill or downstairs... I'll have to research it and post again.. My pain completely subsided about a day later and my knees feel perfectly fine now... Hmmm..
  14. What an absolute blast last night !! Avroair you did a great job in putting this all together. It was fantastic to finally meet so many of you and share some really interesting stories.... Team DEMP - congrats to YOU on #200 ! You planned it quite well with this enjoyable night being your milestone. It was great to talk with you as well. Thanks for the button ! BrianSnat - Talking with you about Geocaching, trails, mountains, mines, hide strategies, etc... is like talking with the Mickey Mantle of geocaching ! Thanks for all your help.. Quoddy - We just scratched the surface in talking about Maine ! We need to pick that up again sometime... Haggaeus- Team Shibby - Serg - dhenning - Harrald - Mrs. Avroair (Rose) - KBer - Tiffany's Slaves - Z-Man - and so many others.. It was great to meet you all.. Looking forward to the July Harriman event !
  15. Thanks ! I just downloaded GSAK and it seems like just what I need !
  16. Does anyone know of a good method to import waypoints between DeLorme TopoUSA 5.0, MapSource, or ExpertGPS? I have been quite happy with MapSource and ExpertGPS as far as managing waypoints and caches, however I can't find a good way to bring in waypoints to TopoUSA as either a project or as a draw file... Any hints or ideas are greatly appreciated !
  17. Avro... you are really one creative guy! The cache description seemed as if "Q" himself wrote it... I gotta take a day off real soon and go for these...
  18. I should be able to make it as well.... Wings..beer...famous cachers, and an event button.... What more could you ask for?
  19. With much gratitude to Brian, JMBella, and TeamDEMP, we made it through the Hudson Highlands this past Friday.. We arrived at the parking site at about 9:45 and were on the trail at 10:00 exactly. We took the white trail up to the quarry and walked its perimeter trail. One of the guys in our group has a questionable back and did not want to risk spoiling the day by searching for The Funnel. So onward and upward.... The trail kept going higher and higher... As I read off the altitude as indicated on the GPS, we were wondering how we would ever get to 1400 ft ! Fortunately there were some great stopping areas with amazing views despite the haze. After Gates of the Hudson (which was a blast), my colleagues wanted to know about Plan B, which was to continue on the Yellow trail. When I told them that it was only about another 400 ft. up and that they were wimps, we continued up... Mt. Taurus was excellent and we stopped for lunch at the obvious spot (great coordinates DEMP !) The strangest part of the day was while we were relaxing after lunch, we heard some hikers coming up from the other direction... It turns out that they were 2 quite lovely Swiss girls hiking up the blue trail.. Now I figured that either I was oxygen deprived or they were filming a Coors commercial... They just stopped for awhile, asked some questions about the trail down, and commented on the view. At this point, I was ready to forget about the other caches and head back down also, but we GEOcachers are determined ! (somebody smack me...) We continued on to Bull Head Junction and the Cornish Caches which were very interesting and a lot of fun... We made it back to the car at 5:00 and went into Cold Spring for a great dinner and cold beverages. I would go back to the Hudson Highlands in a second...it's an excellent hike with great trails and awesome views. I truly enjoyed the day. I really would love to go back and try for The Funnel and JR's Point sometime, not to mention the Breakneck caches. Again.. MANY THANKS to you all who helped with your ideas and suggestions.. Brian.. Your map was excellent ! I'll post logs and pics soon.
  20. Thank you so much guys... You answered all my questions... It looks like I have a Plan A and a Plan B for this trek...I really appreciate the ideas and suggestions.. (Now... I wonder if Planet has any of her famous wraps for sale??? )
  21. I know that good views and the Cornish caches are high on the hit list, so I might consider this as well.. Brian, so your access to the Funnel was via the west side of the quarry going up from there as opposed to heading due west off the white trail? Also.. In case we go to Mt. Taurus, does anyone have the coordinates of the vista where you stopped for lunch?
  22. You guys are amazing ! In just a couple of hours, I have all this great info ! (Don't we have work to do ??) Anyway.. Thanks Brian, JMBella, and TeamDEMP.. These are great suggestions and descriptions.. I think we'll park at Little Stony Point and go right for #3 as you suggested DEMP.. Brian.. This map is very helpful.. It looks like leaving off #1 and #2 will allow us to do the whole route in our alotted time... Many Thanks for the quick response... I'm looking forward to Friday.. and also joining you all again on Jaunt II. P.S.. DEMP.. I printed out your response to show my co-workers in case they decide to poop out early
  23. This Friday, some co-workers and I are planning a hike through the Hudson Highlands area. They are very interested in geocaching and in the area in general (They are from Central Jersey) For this trip, I was looking at the following caches.. Old Cornish Farm, Cornish House Mystery, Gates of the Hudson, and Mt. Taurus. If anyone has recommendations on the order to do these caches... where to park....the best way to get from cache to cache... etc.. I sure would appreciate it ! I have purchased the East Hudson Trails Map and we are budgeting about 4-5 hours... The hiking skill/stamina level of my co-workers is somewhat unknown Based on this, I am open to your ideas about whether these caches would be best for this outing... Boy.. I sure wish I was able to go with you guys last month.... I really appreciate any thoughts or help you can provide...
