  1. Just wanted to add Clyde has worked to have GSAK already supporting this issue. Just uploaded his latest build then sent a load of caches to the new eXplorist, worked like a charm. Loaded the attributes, pictures, and child waypoints for each cache loaded. Sorry I'm not a YouTube contributor to load a video.
  2. You don't want to be a Premium Member for the Premium Member caches. You want to be a Premium Member for the Pocket Queries, caches along a route feature, and bookmarks. There are a few PM caches that "great" caches or caches release first as a PM cache to give an edge to the PMs on the FTF hunt. But the ability to ask the Groundspeak database to give you information on up to 500 caches (soon to be 1000) by way of a PQ that are of your choice of type, difficulty, terrain to your liking it's what rocks. If you do any road trips the ability to create a route from point A to point B and retrive information on your selected type of caches within your determined distance from your route sure can add fun to the trip and ease in planning a geocaching road trip.
  3. Nice to know. I still havn't had time to test this in IE. Do the attributes transfer to the GC using IE?
  4. Installed the Magellan communicator and sent a few caches to my explorist GC. It would only allow me to send one at a time, would not allow to send a full page of caches. Also did not send the attributes. It did send the pictures on the cache page. Was easy to install on my Vista laptop using FireFox 3.5.9 I'll try later on IE.
  5. Are you calling me old? We thought the same thing when they switched from the 5 event PT test to the 3 event APFT and again when we saw trainees running around with running shoes instead of boots. Then when they went to a APFT uniform we thought the world had come to an end. - Basic for each of the services changes. What remains the same is a civilian becomes a service member. They learn a new language, way to dress, and behave. Dispite the doubts of us old Soldiers your generation of Soldiers are doing just fine, the new generation will serve us well also. With that being said, barracks (especially in a training environment) still remain a place where personal gear grows legs and walks off and because of that "high dollar" items are often mandated to being locked in the trainee's luggage until graduation. wildfir399 you will have plenty to keep yourself occupied without geocaching. But you will also have some of the most awsome chances to geocache once you get to your first duty station and start your travels. live to serve
  6. As a former Army Drill Instructor I doubt you will have time to go geocaching while at basic. Most likely you will not even be allowed to have the gps with you, it would have to be locked in your luggage with other personal items not deemed to be of use during basic. Even if you could have it with you barracks such as those used in training locations are not the most secure and you would be placing the borrow item at risk for being stolen. Trust me you need to concentrate on the mission at hand, that is one of turning from being a civilian into that of being a Sailor. Not an easy task. There will plenty of time for caching once you finish your training and get to your first duty assignment. And thanks for stepping up to the plate to serve your nation. Hope your career is as fulfilling has mine has been.
  7. Who is your email provider? Hotmail and several others are known to be bad about blocking PQ emails. Try setting up a gmail account and send your PQs to it if the emails have been generated but never received.
  8. Last night I upgraded my GSAK to include this new build and it loading caches to the new Explorist GC worked like a charm. One note, remember to change your preferences to the 1.0.1 gpx version under your profiles. This is what will get some of that extra information into GSAK to load to the gps.
  9. I have geobuddies and often go on geotrips. On occasion I've even been known to take a geovacation, that is if I can fit it into my geobudget.
  10. There are several virtuals and earthcaches in the park itself. The town of Gettysburg has several. There are 3 caches located at the Boyd's Bears store nearby that many people visit when in the area. GC14YRW, GCKA5M, GCA250, GCQ7EZ, and GCC71 are a few in the area.
  11. You may want to look at the new Magellan eXplorist GC that will be released next weekend. Check this thread out to get some information about it. Supports paperless caching while also very easy to use.
  12. Yes, right now you can not load directly to a Magellan from the site. Good news is Magellan is working to correct that. I don't know when that will be seen, but it is being advertised along with the release of their new eXplorist GC unit.
  13. Think I'm working. I'll have to check my schedule but traditionally the first weekend of the month is "drill weekend" for National Guard and Reserve. Live to serve.
  14. It's a separate .gpx file, so you should be able to. Yes you can. I made a copy then deleted from the unit just to see if you can. No problem at all. I also made a .gpx from GSAK and loaded it and that worked also. So you can either just drag and drop the file straight from your email (unzipped) or create a special one from GSAK. I'm thinking you could easily send a .gpx from GSAK to the gps, but I haven't tried that yet.
  15. I agree, I've been on some small streets in some small towns in SC and everyone has been displayed. Much different from the old base maps.
  16. Read through this thread to get an idea of how well it operates from those currently testing it. No unit is best for all, with that being said it supports paperless caching (all the information needed can be loaded easily to the GC), easy to operate, will hole 10,000 geocaches. The screen is bright and easy to see, but the font is small and hard for some of us to read. If you have the time, I would suggest going to a store and testing different models out. Also go to a caching event and ask to see some of the different models, someone might have the new eXplorist GC. Nothing like putting the unit in your own hands to decide if you like it or not.
  17. To customize your geocaching experience with caches that meet your specific criteria, the eXplorist GC has seamless connection to geocaching.com. This allows you to search one millions caches worldwide. With a click of the mouse, you can transfer the information with the Send to GPS feature. Magellan does not have the "Send to GPS" feature not even for this new unit. Not sure if they will in the future. But you can drag and drop a .gpx file to the unit. No need for another program to load the information. You can use GSAK if you want, but you can load 10,000 caches then filter for what you want for that day by any combination of size / diff / terrain / type. Edit to add - doesn't mean they won't in the future and it looks like they are planning to do so.
  18. Haven't been able to do any hard core caching as of yet. Did drive 120 miles with the unit powered off then turned on to see how fast it locking in on the satellites, and was happy with the results. The one problem is my old eyes and it's small font, ended up with my eyes crossed and a headache after playing around the neighborhood with it. Will be interested in reading through the manual and giving it a real try out.
  19. mils is a method of dividing of a circle into more accurate increments than the 360 degrees most of us are used to. Mostly used in the Field Artillery community for accuracy of fire.
  20. Waypoint projection is under tools, waypoint projection. click on the waypoint projection button enter bearing in degrees then distance in miles, feet, meters, or yards. Click the next button and it will give you the new coordinates. Click on the New Waypoint button to save and name. you can even add a description field if you so desire.
  21. Saw where you could project a waypoint but didn't try it out, think it was from the menu from the map screen, but I could be wrong with that. I have several files loaded in it and they all show up, so it would be easy to drag and drop each PQ as received. No need to create 1 file for everything you want on your GPS. Only instruction needed there would be what file to drop it in (pretty obvious though it is the Geocache file). After loading a large .gpx file it does take a few minutes to process upon first powering up. After that there is no extra wait time. You need do nothing special to have the geocaching icon displayed for the caches. I like that you can search by name, GC#, or nearest so no matter what you prefer that is available.
  22. I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to say here. --Marky Ha, prime example of doing 2 things at once, wasn't very well expressed was it. I personally hated putting the gps in turn by turn to get to the parking lot then changes to off road navigation once I got there, then switching back again. over and over and over. I like leaving my car unit in the car and it doing the turn by turn and my hand held in off road mode. Of course I realize and appreciate I am in a place in my life I can choose to spend the extra money to not have the inconvience of switching back and forth. So for me it is not an issue if the new GPS does or not do turn by turn as I wouldn't use it. Might be a deal breaker for someone else though. Back to defending the nation, more later.
  23. I also am part of the Insider's Program and have been playing with and testing the unit for several days now. I have had friends of various levels of technical capabilities have a go with it to get their impressions to add to my own. I sent an initial impression report in and am now compiling the goods and bads I have discovered to this point to submit to Magellan. As it was developed for Geocaching it provides features a cacher would want, projecting a waypoint, different caching icons, paperless caching. I'm finding more every time I turn it on. The sorting and filtering works like a charm as you can select about any combination of cache types and sizes you can imagine. On a personal note, I've tried to navigate and cache with 1 gps and hated it. This model has the streets down to small streets in small towns, so great for when you are walking around a town you maybe unfamililar with caching. We will keep looking at it and answering questions but know we don't know everything Magellan may have in mind.
  24. Had a newbie test it this morning. Handed to her and turned around to get in my safe. By the time I turned back around she was already reading cache descriptions and making comments. Her initial opinion was it is the easiest she has seen so far. I explained PQs to her and how she could create a PQ unzip the file and drag and drop to the unit then run out the door. For you travel bug lovers it displays tells if the cache has TB listed at the time of generating the .gpx. As eventually you will be able to see pictures from the cache page it is also set up to show the attibutes for each cache. Saw where you can hand enter not only waypoints but geocaches. Have not had time to explore this feature yet. I've made several custom backgrounds, you just need to create a .png and drag and drop to the correct file.
