  1. I think I found one of the ones you are talking about. I took my kids and nephews to find this one near Citrus Heights and it was totally in a homeless camp. No one was home but I didn't know where to look, was I really going to go through someone's stuff? Luckily I spotted the container made a quick sign and trades and replaced it before the kids got too deep back. These totally suck. I also hate hiking a mile or more to find a micro. If it is a mile plus hike HIDE SOMETHING WORTH FINDING, not a film container in an obvious place with a wet log.
  2. Tonight we saw what appeared to be a travel bug on a car, this is something which we have never seen or heard of, so we followed them home trying to get the tracking number. We were not sure if it was really even a travel bug so we did not walk up to the owners when they got home (they went in their garage). This particular TB had very small print, so we were not able to get the number. This could be why they do not get logged often. Next time I see one (or this one in Troutdale) I will probably approach the owner. Can you believe that after we saw it, we hit every green light on the way home, the one time in my life I wanted a red light and I couldn't get one.
  3. Thanks for all the input. I will try not to get upset with incorrect logs and try to find the humor in some of them.
  4. Nice find, the history of benchmarks is what got me interested in searching for them. I look forward to getting some finds this old also.
  5. I finally found a way to make more money driving down the highway; do you know how many "structural benchmarks" are right off the highway, water towers, airport beacons, ect. The only problem Gore might have is the environmental impact of many more cars driving like crazy all over the place locating these valuable stations. I can't wait. p.s. tap tap on all benchmarks visible from I-84 in Multnomah County (I really need the money).
  6. Great shot, possibly the most "artistic" approach to a benchmark photo.

  8. Great shot, this one made me laugh too.
  9. Is it just me or does it bother you when you look at the logs of some of the benchmarks and see "found it" logs and then in their description people say things like, "didn't find the disk, but it should have been there," or "didn't find the tower but I was in the right location," or "found rm and know where the disk should be but didn't actually see it." Does this bother you or just me? Another thing which bothers me is when people complain in a log about not finding a disk when the log clearly states that the station is a structure, or something along the lines of that where it is clear these people have failed to carefully read the data sheet. Does this bother you or just me?
  10. Amazing story/video. Imagine being the surveyor who told them where to drill.
  11. Great find, and exciting story.
  12. Benchmark hunting is just another game, well kind of. It can be only another game or, if you find benchmarks which have not been found in a while, you could actually help out the NGS and report your findings. They do not add to your find count because they are not caches. There are millions of survey marks all over the country (world) but gc only has a list from the NGS (which if I remember correctly is a few years outdated). Hope this helps.
  13. If you read the description on the benchmark page, there is no underground mark..... "STATION MARK--STANDARD TABLET STAMPED---FLAT 1953---, CEMENTED IN SOLID ROCK OUTCROP. It is very hard to set an underground mark in a solid rock outcrop. John Guess, I should have read the benchmark page before posting (something which usually ticks me off when others don't do)
  14. I think we have to be aware of what we are doing when we mark a station as destroyed. Yesterday I marked one station as destroyed on GC site because of the danger in locating the station (I took the dangerous approach and the station was gone, it appears erosion threw the station down about 100ft.). Even though I marked this station as destroyed on the GC site I am not yet reporting this station as destroyed to the NGS until I can hike/climb down to where the station may have fallen and find evidence of the destroyed station (ie. mangled disk). As to the question of the op, this would meet the qualification for "poor condition," even though the mark is not identifiable by you or I, there may be a mark underground (deeper than your detector can see, or even made of stone).
