  1. Yeah, I hate those ammo cans in unique locations too... ....if only there were more plain ordinary micros around...
  2. Thanks, I appreciate the input and this the website angle is a great idea!
  3. I have the opportunity to serve at a camp each year through our church's denomination. (I am a pastor of a church.) The camp has a week of family camp, multiple youth and kid's camps throughout the summer, they do a soccer camp, a horse camp, a wilderness camp, and various other couple day events like scrapbooking, etc... I would like to pitch to them the idea for a Geocaching camp where it is a two day one night event. Using the first day with people arriving at in the afternoon and staying till the next evening. I figured the first afternoon/evening could be spent on talking about the basics, i.e. using a GPS, what is in a cache, different types of caches, swag items, ways to approaching caching, etc... Then the second day have hidden an number of different types of caches throughout the camp and have them hunt them, maybe in 4 person teams. The camp is large enough to incorporate about every type of cache imaginable. I am working through this on paper and would like to make sure all my bases are covered when I present this to the camp director and the camp governing board. So any advice?
  4. can you clarify this post a little? Cause I don't understand what it is you are talking about. I am new and maybe I am missing something.
  5. As still a newbie here I hope I am not overstepping my boundaries, but isn't caching suppose to be fun and an enjoyable activity? I love it and sure I like to see the smileys go up and don't like to see those DNFs; but is anyone so insecure that they feel having DNFs make them less of a cacher? I know I got two right now and they eat at me. They are there (confirmed by talking to owners) but I just haven't been able to find them. I will, without a doubt I know I will because they present a challange to me, and it would be nice to see the DNFs disappear if I find the cache I had listed as DNF, but if not...who cares? It is going to take more for me to feel bad about myself than alot of DNFs in my profile. It is about having fun, loving the challenge and the sport than being worried about the size of your Found It counter.
  6. We are getting our first real snow of the season here in Western PA and I have been lamenting over the past two days how this is going to screw up my new obession. Well, I guess looking for the micros in the guardrails and lifting lamp post skirts will keep me on life support. I just found out about the Alleghany GeoTrail caches and the special coins you can get from them too. Might need to buy some snow shoes...
  7. Agreed....love my eTrex Legend HCx!!! Had to add my two cents before a mod jumped on the request to close it....
  8. Well, I joined as a PM after only finding a handful of caches. Did it because I am hooked and love the sport and know this is something I will do for a long time. Wasn't overly impressed by the benefits -- can't get the caches along a route thing to work right for me --- very few members only caches around... but I joined to be a part of supporting this site and the sport. If there was a higher level (secret platinum one, prehaps?) and there were special caches; I would have no problem with that. I probably wouldn't pay more to get access to them, but at the same time, if someone wants to do it, then let them do it. It is all part of the system and that is how it works. One thing I want to know is....when do I get my decoder ring in the mail?
  9. Most useful information from a GPS when geocaching.....distance to target & margin of error reading.
  10. best thing to do is play with it. Garmin manual that comes with it stinks. I learned by advice by someone who had one and then just playing around with it.
  11. Not so... there are private cemetaries and are privately owned.
  12. I am a newbie too, but I don't see why not. It helps to move the coin and not let it sit in your pack. Whether you are doing it to move the coin or just to try to draw people to your cache can only be determined by you, but either way you are accomplishing what the coin owner wants if it helps the original purpose.
  13. I have been reading and studying up on caching for the last 2 weeks. It has been driving me mad not to have gone. A couple has asked my wife and I to go out and do one and all week I haven't been able to wait till Friday. Monday I went out and got a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx and have played around with it a little. We have been dying to go, but scheduling and timing hasn't worked out. So today, I had a cancelation of a meeting and I ran out to a spot that I had already searched out to where I could pull the car off. So I got there and jumped out and headed up the spot. Found it in about 5 minutes of walking and 5 minutes searching. VERY COOL! So I got home and casually said to the kids and my wife, "hey, if we get time after supper, does anyone want to try geocaching?" They jumped at the chance and we plowed through supper in record time and were out the door with only a little light to spare. The kids and the wife (pregnant wife, who is bummed that she'll soon be too pregnant to do this). Me. Can't wait till morning!!!
