  1. we were in the same spot and just got back into caching after about 4 or 5 years. The phone apps are amazing compared to when it first came out for the iphone. I have since switched to an Android and love the app. However, I still find in tree cover, or spotty service areas that my 60CSx is much more accurate. but for in town or in areas where cell service is decent, the phones are great.
  2. Been out of caching for about 4 or so years and just started back up again. My 8 year old has caught the bug and he absolutely loves it. My main GPS unit is a tried and true Garmin 60CSX, but I am seeing all new fancy types of features out there on some GPS units so was thinking about upgrading if he is going to maintain interest in this which looks like he will be. Should i upgrade to the 64? what do you all think?
  3. watching some review vids of the 64... must you use opencaching.com to be able to download caches to it?
  4. Didn't think of that... it's been so long since I have done anything with this... was there a Garmin "dashboard" type thing I need to download to do that?
  5. Just getting back into caching after about 3-4 year break. Took out the trust old Garmin 60CSx and found that the GC app on my Galaxy 5s was doing a better job by about 20 feet. Was a little disappointed, but knew back in the day this was the workhorse that everyone swore by. I assumed with the improvement in technology that it could be lacking a little but never thought my phone would beat it. Back when I had used the iPhone 4 it was terrible for caching. So, has there become a newer one that seems to be the trusty sidekick this used to be? I knew the 62 came out right as I had stopped caching and now I see there is a 64st. Any suggestions? I have a Mallegan GC too but haven't tried that one out now, but remember from the past I found the 60 to be much better than the GC.
  6. Many times my logs relfect the cache itself... a quick C&D gets a quick log...not spitefully, but if the cache owner didn't bring me here to see something or for even a nice walk in the woods or a strange rock or a pile of dirt or whatever, then what is there to log? you are gonna get a TFTC. Maybe I should start writing, "this guardrail is quite shiney along the desolate wilderness road. Thanks for not making me walk 50 feet back to that hollowed out tree stump to find an ammo can or something." However, no matter the size or where it is, if the cache causes me to see something, even if it is just a plain old walk in the woods, I make lengthier logs because I have experienced more. I love getting longer logs on my caches, and there are a few of mine that are quick C&Ds that I don't expect much when people log. I think once you place a cache, the idea of the log takes on a different meaning for you.
  7. Got one that has only been used for a few caches. looks new, has original box and everyting that came with it. PM with what you would offer for it.
  8. AGT coins (Allegheny Geotrail) I am wondering if anyone has any of these to trade. I have tried to finish this series in the last two years, but with having a premature baby and then my mom having a prolong bout against cancer where my brothers and I became her caretakers until she passed away, I just havent been able to finish it. I have time set aside in the next weeks to attack it the best I can, but I seriously doubt I am going to be able to complete it before the deadline is up. I talked with the people at GW9 and they said at this point there are no more extensions and once the coins are gone they are gone. I keep watching the site hoping it will be extended again (it's been done at least 3 times I think) but alas, it seems to be the end. I have had a ton of fun earning these, but I stare up at the Allegheny GeoTrail offical plaque that I dropped something like 60 or 80 bucks on and the empty holes bug me to no end. My whole family was trying to accomplish these and we each had a passport, so we have a few extras that my kids generously said that instead of each of us trying to complete a set at least we could have the one in the plaque to display. So I am wondering if anyone else is in the place I am and know they prob won't finish the whole thing, but still have some other counties they would like to trade for. The ones we have are: Cameron Clarion Elk Forest Jefferson Potter (We've earned the stamps for Potter, but still need to pick up our coins, hopefully this week) We are in need of: Crawford McKean (only 2 more stamps for this one, but still interested incase we don't get to it.) Venango Warren Final Coin Getting the plaque filled is important to us, but so is finishing the trail, so we will still be going out and trying to do the caches eventhough there won't be the stamps or the coins to earn. If you have some to trade, please PM me here. thanks!
  9. oh...jeesh....I never noticed that up there... thanks and will a mod please either move this or delete it? I will just copy it in there now so it might as well be deleted. Sorry about that.

  11. Yeah, he passed in January, finally losing the battle to cancer. :( There is a thread on the forum here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=265405&st=0 Just found it...ty... great guy...
  12. wow, just came back to caching and saw in the memorial coin thread that Mike was no longer with us... Never met him in person but bought many (very many) of his mystery geocoin auctions on eBay and we had nice conversations over emails. He always sent more than just want I bought... I have one of his untrackable person geocoin, a 9/11 commenerative coin, a bunch of pins and buttons, all things that weren't supposed to be in the auctions, but always were there with the item won. My heart goes out to the family and to his girls...
  13. Whoa....hold up there... I have been away from the game for awhile and just started caching again last month after about a year other than a few minor ones.... I had boughtsome coins off of RiverCacher and some other caching stuff off of eBay. We got to joking around back and forth and made small talk at times in emails. I knew he was sick, but did I read that right as a "memorial" coin???? He died?? When did that happen? is there a thread? how are the kids? I hopped on here to post some pics of the coins I got in the mail yesterday but now they don't seem as important...
  14. Got mine! They all look great! very cool coins! Thank you!
  15. Payment sent! Cant wait to get them
  16. I will take one of each... pmed you and asked about price but I see it now. get ahold of me and we can arrange payment, but I certainly will take one of each of them...
  17. Okay, why so cheap and why would Target sell these for $35? am I missing something? I haven't been out caching for 9 months to a year and just started back out again last week. Right before I took the break I got one of these...is there a problem with them? Mine seems to be working fine except a few bugs here and there, but it gets me to the cache...
  18. Got the iPhone last week, first app I got was the Geocaching one... didn't get to use it till today and it took me to within 1 foot of it! It was a quick one on the way home from a meeting and sorta a spur of the moment thing. It doesn't got all the fancy topo maps of my 60CSx and all the bells and whistles of my Magellan GC, but I was greatly impressed with the accuracy. I wondered around in the woods a little because I forgot I was the blue pulsing ball instead of the green flag (lol) but it took me directly to cache dead on! very impressed with app, however, haven't been impressed with batterylife of the iphone over all (however, it is still new to me and I play with it constantly). I wouldn't rely on it for an all day caching run due to that issue and would really recommend a car charger if you are going to attempt it, but so far I am very impressed with it and the features of papers with up to date real time logs is really cool. I logged my smilely right from the phone and it did great!
  19. hmmmm.... tick tock, tick tock.... how long till a mod shows up on this thread...... Taking bets now....
  20. True a stand alone GPS doesn't mean that everything will be perfect, but I have come to believe that alot of the combo things...apps on the iPhone, iPad or Verizon's VZNavigator, just aren't going to cut it. The phones are made to be phones with apps as a bonus (although I would admit that is starting to change). I personally would prob invest in an old eTrex and use it before relying on the iPhone. Just my opinion, I love my iPod, love the iPhones I have used, and the iPads I have seen, but doesn't ring my bell to use for caching.
  21. What I like to do is when I spot them, I act like a muggle. Find some reason to be there and hang out. It has many times caused the others to go into "stealth" mode, but they haven't a clue what to do. After I let them sweat a few minutes I go introduce myself to them. lol. Last year I ran into 2 guys and a girl who had about 20 or so finds under their belts. They were in their early 20s, so they were still in that awkward stage many go through when in strange situations. It was a simple guardrail cache and my daughter and I pulled in right in front of it with all three of them standing there. They stopped looking around the rail and the trees near it and moved away and try to make it look like they were just hanging out. Sadly for them, it was at the far end of a parking lot that no one would have any business being there and it was very awkward for them. My daughter and I set in the car for a few minutes watching their sideways glances over at us and I would ignore them or nod at them when we caught each others eyes which was making them all the more frustrated and not sure what to do. Finally, when they glanced over their shoulders for about the 200th time, I gave them a little wave while holding the GPS in my hand. Their jaws dropped and we all had a good laugh over it. It also amazed them when I reached into the guardrail right away and pulled out the cache. All and all, I have never had a bad experience running into other cachers in the field and its really nice to get to know others who love doing what I do.
  22. Well then, that looks like a good location for someone who lives near there to put one! lol.
