Mine is about a half mile away, though it was the 4th one I placed. My furthest is about 80 miles away, 3mi by water.

It's possible that he downloaded the coordinates into his GPSr and doesn't read the discription, just goes out with the waypoint. With the old coordinates on the page, this is what he was given, not the correct ones.

Being a charter member, you can put in a pocket querry for caches in the area. Find a central area of the trail system, then ask for caches in a 100mi radius. Download the info and as you bike along, it will show what is nearby, and give the name in the memo line of your gps.

Email the owner of the present cache, see if they have any objections to your cache being placed where you propose. It may increase traffic to their cache also, so I don't see why they would object.

See Bugged Coin, #7777. I picked up an empty travel bug from a cache,emailed the owner and attached a geocoin to it. It has traveled much better than my other geocoins have. the coins are so good looking, most people keep them. I placed mine in a plastic coin case with logging instructions on the outside, they still don't get logged, so if you want to keep it moving, put a tag on it too. If you don't care, put it in as is and let the finder decide.

Mine was a 4 mile paddle one way to the island. Camped overnight, went for another cache on the shoreline the following day, from the island to the cache and back to the car, 11 miles. Elevation gain? 0, unless you want to add the up and down on the 2.5' waves.

My first 100+ finds were done using a Garmin 38, which only reads .01miles. The last 100', I use a compass and guesstimate the distance. If I didn't find it, I'd walk in a different direction and start triangulating.

Looks good, tho I don't think I can get my kayak to this 'island'. Hope you get a lot of visits.

I had plans to refind my first find, which I was FTF. Several weeks prior, it got archived, so I refound my second , which I had found on the same day. Happy anniversary.

If the container is suspended upside down underwater, the trapped air inside would keep most water out of it. Big problem may be what to use for counter weight so it's not too difficult to submerge.

Like Markwell said, find a few more before placing your own, you'll get a better idea of how/where to hide them, and, the more you find, the more ideas you'll get as to containers to use and not use, camaflauge techniques, etc.
Water caches will not be found as much as walk up ones, but they will come. (I'm still waiting for someone to find mine 3mi from shore in the Saginaw Bay, placed it Labor Day W/E.)

The heat that builds up inside some caches could do some strange things to the meds. They need to be kept at a moderate temperature.

Another angle you could work on is to have the CA's hide caches. The Cleveland Metro Parks have hidden 6-10 caches in their parks, and here in the Detroit area, the Metropark people have hidden one so far. Look at GC5B80. Congradulations on getting permission for the first one.
