Being that there seems to be so many problems with the Oregon series and working out the kinks is it better to go with the 60CSX or am I going to find I have a paper trail being that the 60CSX is not paperless? Just want to get off to the right start being a newbie! THANKS in advance for the help.
Hi BKH1972, I am also a newbie. I had a magellan explorist 400 and it worked great. I even got the cache size on the screen using GSAK. ........................but not paperless........................!
Now I have recently purchased a garmin oregon 300 with topo map quebec south. It works great. There maybe a few bugs but the geocaching part works wonders. and no more paper. If you do last minute caches once and a while, you will apreciate.
I have never owned the 60 series but I truely love the oregon. Why use a 60 csx and a pocket pc when you can have only one unit? You'll end up wanting only one unit in the near futur anyways.
Garmin have good service and will get everthing working even better.
Just my 2 cents

Has anyone ever used a TomTom? I'm new to this and was hoping that I can use my TomTom.
Thank You
jjblemke
You can use TOMTOM for geocaching. Use a program called TYRE that you can download off the net for free and enter your caches as Points of Interest.
However, if a cache is too close to the road,TOMTOM will tend to jump to the road making it a little difficult but in general it works good and you can drive to the POI (geocache). you can even enter your own logo to represent your caches on the map.
Hope this helps.

Please, come over. I can't promise cake and ice-cream, but
way more eyes, that are wise in the ways of DeLorme will
see your query, and share with you what the options are
and give you an idea of level of difficulty.

Great, I'll be right over, but I still want input from geocaching guys !!!

Hello, I'm new enough to geocaching and am looking for a new paperless GPS. Now the PN-40 seems to be my favorate choice ! For the price seems great and above colorado and oregon.
But I live in canada. Can I still make it work? and what could I use to make it worth while? I could use some help on this one.
Thanks in advance for all the advise !!!!!

BigBoy20, drop me a note if you have any specific questions. We're not the largest gc.com support group but we're pretty responsive... and we know a little bit about the PN-Series devices.

O.K. What about the pn-40 for Canada ! I do not seem to see it anywhere here. Will it still do the job because it seems pretty great "

But I've read that the oregon or colorado aren't that great yet and the screen on the oregon is hard to see in the sun. Unless there are other models out there that are good for paperless ?

You could use GSAK macro and make it true paperless.
So what your saying is that with macro, the csx will show the comments written by the owner of the cache! And if this is so, for how many caches can I put this info ?

HI everyone, I Want to buy new GPS and most everything points to garmin csx but is it paperless. I have a magellan and been caught a few times looking for a cache that are actually departure coordinates without my knowing because I do not carry around my laptop. I simply want one unit. I would like to drive around and say OK today lets go do a cache with the children without having to do laptop homework.
Thanks !

The size attribute is not shown on geocaching POIs, but you can use a program like GSAK to alter the name of the cache so it will have the cache size as part of the name. I use an R at the end of the name for regular, S for small, and M for micro on my 400. This post has an explanation of how to do that. The technique works for exporting Geocache POI (.gs file) as well as the regular POI files (.upt) mentioned in that post.
I find the ideal realy good but I can't seem to find the way to do it with gsak. I know its there but where ?

I'm finaly getting somewhere with my magellan explorist 400 but I seem to be missing some info. Like most people, I assume, I carry my GPS mostly everywhere I got incase I have time to look for a cache. The only problem is that I don't carry my laptop everywhere.
Now I get out of the truck and go looking with my magellan explorist 400 but I do not know what size cache I'm looking for ?? Does anyone know how I can download this info on the darn thing or do I just sell it and get something else?
Any help is apreciated.
thanks

Pocket Queries are your friend!
Here is a fine tutorial - http://www.markwell.us/pq.htm
You can specify up to 500 caches either along a route or in an area using criteria you include. All is emailed to you in GPX format.
Thanks a million !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

60CSX or Oregon 400t?
in How do I...?
Posted · Edited by ARGUS.360
Here's a short list of things I miss from the 60csx. I'm sure this list will grow since I've only had the Oregon for a week so far, but at the same time I wouldn't give up the Oregon either.
the ability to edit waypoint info in the field, this includes being able to change the coords while going thru the stages of a multi, deleting a waypoint after a find to declutter the map, or even being able to rename a waypoint.
You can edit waypoints with the oregon. just use waypoint manager. Here you can rename, reposition, delete and much more. You can also turn a geocache into a 2nd waypoint and it will add a 1 at the end or just rename it and give it the coordinates you want or whatever.
I know the oregon is not a 60csx and I know the 60 csx ia realy good unit. But I also beleive you have to play with the oregon alot to get all the features figured out.
For those who do not have an oregon, please use one for a few weeks to discover how it realy works before saying its missing a lot of stuff. It's just has a different method of operation.
