  1. My girls and I are relatively new at geocaching and have been using our iphone app to find several caches. I am worried about the outcome of the iphone if it gets dropped or bumped so I would like to purchase a GPS used specifically for geocaching. I want something that is EXTREMELY USER FRIENDLY and will show me the hints and logs if I choose. I briefly used the Oregon 300 and really liked it...but before I jump into spending that kind of $$, I wanted to do some more research...then I stumbled on the Dakota 20...HELP!!

Hi there, I own an oregon 300 and love it. Now here is my view...Sometimes its better to pay a little more to have more options. You may get a less expensive unit and figure out that you would actually like a bit more features so if you had payed a little more than you do not have to buy another unit. I speek from experience. My 300 is great.

    Just my 2 cents !!

  2. I do not quite understand how this works. Does anyone have a more detailed explanation . Please help. here is the link to what I have tried. I have an Oregon 300.

    Thanks

Have you tried those '5 steps' and not been able to get it to work?

Have you upgraded your GPS software to the beta required for the raster maps to work?

    I have version 3.20.

I do not seem to understand what to do with Babel.

  3. I use USA Photomaps to trace trails on aerial photos, then I use GPSBabel to turn those traced routes into Garmin GPS tracks and then use Mapsource to load those tracks into my GPS so I have a tracklog of trails that aren't otherwise mapped.

To do this you need USA Photomaps, GBSbabel, and Mapsource.

Here's the batch file I use -- directory paths will need to be changed depending on where your programs are, so you'll have to edit this a bit:

REM PM2GDB.BAT - Converts USAPhotoMaps Route (.txt) to Garmin Tracklog file (.GDB)

REM USAPhotomaps is available from www.jdmcox.com
REM GPSBabel is available from www.gpsbabel.org

REM Modify the next 3 "SET" lines so they suit your system. Mapsourcedir is the folder
REM where mapsource.exe resides. Babeldir is the folder where gpsbabel.exe resides.
REM Outputdir is the folder where the output files will be written.

    SET MAPSOURCEDIR=C:\Garmin
    SET BABELDIR=C:\YourGPSBabelFolder
    SET OUTPUTDIR=C:

REM TO USE THIS BATCH FILE: Save it as PM2GDB.BAT on your desktop, then just drag
REM and drop a USA Photomaps Route file (.txt) format onto it. If you've done
REM everything correctly Mapsource will open and the tracklog will be created.

REM We need to modify source file with a new first line: utm_z,utm_n,utm_e
    REM to make gpsbabel happy
    echo utm_z,utm_n,utm_e > "%OUTPUTDIR%\Newtrack.txt"
    type %1 >> "%OUTPUTDIR%\Newtrack.txt"

REM TEXT BETWEEN THE LINES MUST BE ON THE SAME LINE IN THE BATCH FILE
REM It wrapped when I posted it but it can't be 2 separate lines

    REM _______________________________
    "%BABELDIR%\gpsbabel.exe" -p "" -t -i unicsv -f "%OUTPUTDIR%\newtrack.txt" -x transform,trk=wpt,del=n -o gdb -F "%OUTPUTDIR%\newtrack.gdb"
    REM _______________________________

    del "%OUTPUTDIR%\newtrack.txt"
    start %MAPSOURCEDIR%\mapsource.exe "%OUTPUTDIR%\newtrack.gdb"

DocDiTTo, Any way you could explain the procedure. I would love to try it but I need a little 'step by step' help.

    Thanks for the help !

  4. I have an oregon 300, here is my question: I already have a garmin topo sd card of my region which works great. I now wanted to add city navigator to my gpsr. Do I add it to the oregon internal memory or do I add it to the garmin topo sd card ( or is that possible ).

Thanks for the help. I have not found a clear answer while reading other logs.

  5. It can be used for geocaching and you can add a program to help see caches on the screen. One of the problems however, is if the cache is too close to the road, it will have trouble getting a lock and will want you to stay on the road. Afterall, it is a street GPSr.

Do you know how I can get the program? I'd be curious to try it.....

Here you go. check this site and download the TYRE software...

  6. Hello. I recently bought a refurbished Tom Tom ONE 130 at a great price ($49 after rebate on eCost!) that is proving to be a great "car GPS" for me.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that it can navigate to a lat/long waypoint, and this made me wonder about it for geocaching. I do certainly plan to use it to navigate my car as close as possible to a geocache, but again, this made me wonder. I am thinking "no" for the following reasons:

    1) Even if "yes", maybe not good to bring this in the woods and potentially scratch/break (though size-wise it is not much bigger than a handheld).

    2) Though it has a "walking mode", doesn't seem to have something like a "compass rose" or something that lets you really navigate "off street".

I am not too concerned if it's "no" (as I have no plans to sell my Forerunner, which I use both for caching and exercise), but I just wanted to get confirmation of my theory, since it could be a good "emergency backup" if I'm wrong. Any thoughts welcome, thanks in advance of your responses.

  7. This isn't specifically for the oregon, but it will work in all garmin models...

    Go to http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_de...d=3645#Instruct

and download that file. Do not run it, but open the exe with winzip or winrar. Browse through the GMobileCard folder then into the Garmin folder, inside is the gmapbmap.img file. Extract that file and send it to the Garmin folder of your oregon. You now have a basemap again, although it is non routable.

There are also some other ones listed here for the Ique that also work, the same general thing applies though, do not run the installer, find the gmapbmap.img file and extract it.

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection....ct=010-00264-00

Of course you will be missing the DEM shading.

    Thanks savant9, I will try this. !

  8. A lot of the "how-to" like stuff gets adds to the posts I make on http://gpsfix.net when the release is made.

The waypoint averaging is discussed here in the 2.96 post:

    http://www.gpsfix.net/garmin-oregon-beta-296/

and the any map support here in the 2.99 post:

    http://www.gpsfix.net/garmin-oregon-beta-299/

The easiest place to find which feature was introduced in which version is to go to the Version page on the wiki:

    http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Versions

Clicking on the link in the detailed version history section will get you to the GPSFix post for that release.

THANKS, I will have a good look at these. I realy enjoys understanding the toys I play with to the best of my abilities.

  9. Hi.

With all the new updates on the oregon series, where can one find the how to's so I know how to use them and what they are for ? ex: .... Added ability to load maps from any img file in the Garmin directory.....................waypoint averging.......etc

    Your help is much apreciated

  10. Don't get me wrong Maingray I realy like my Oregon but here is the point I'm trying to get across. It's as if I bought a cadillac with air conditionning but it only works on one fan speed instead of four. The manufacturer sais it will soon work on all four speeds so he tries stuff. the fan speeds work one day but not the next. So the manufacturer tries more stuff for months and months. Eventually you become a little tired of all this. Its only normal I beleive. There should be enough data now, with all these tests to make it work without any glitches !

    I still love my Garmin

  11. My friend said "buy garmin, they're the best" so I did. Oregon 300. I just don't understand what is going on. I've had the unit for several months now and the updates are always BETA ??? So whats up with that ??? If their programmers aren't able to test these units before we do maybe they should sell these units a little cheaper !!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...........this is starting to PIS@$#?(&)*)(_)(_& me off. I was expecting a unit bug free. It's a good thing I don't treat my custommers this way. :):D

Just had to let out a little steam ....

Thanks for letting me express myself !!

  12. Like rrtsb I've yet to be satisfied with the accuracy of the unit while moving (stationary after a few seconds is setisfactory). I've been on the horn with Garmin and I've also been sending the beta team e-mail requests to improve this aspect of the Oregons operation. I've been looking at purchasing a PN-40 since Delorme has addressed the issues with this type of accuracy and from the forums it seems that the PN-40 is now on par with the 60csx.

Garmin has alot of innovation built into their products. They always seem to have the resources to introduce new and interesting functionality. In spite of all the innovation, the Oregon leaves me often dissapointed when I return home from a day out hiking, load my tracks up on Google Earth or Arc GIS Explorer and look at the terrible tracking the Oregon line exhibits.

With the Oregon, finding waypoints (geocaches) once the unit settles down, seems pretty accurate. Moving (walking, hiking) at slow speeds the Oregon looses all credibility.

    Garmin/Cartesio, are you listening?

Agreed, It's like having a Cadillac that's no better than a Lada !!!!

  13. It is not out yet. GPSCity says they have been told six weeks.

Currently Ibycus Topo is much better and free. I doubt this new version will be better than Ibycus. The main reason to get it is for the DEM data. The DEM data is only usable on some newer units like the Oregon and Colorado. Like USA topo, you should be able to use the DEM shading and 3D views with other maps on the unit.

Will Ibycus allow you to the `recalculate on road` as does the Garmin Topo map ? I find this usefull when geocaching with my oregon 300 . I'm heading to the US for summer vacation and did not want to purchase topo usa juste for 2 weeks.

    Thanks

  14. Will be in Ontario Canada Jul 17th thru the 25. I tried looking at the caches available but don't know the area at all. Will be at the Westin Hotel during this timeframe. I will have some free time and wondered if there are any caches around that area or on the Toronto Island ? :anibad:

Just do a search with the Westin hotel postal code. Go to hide and seek, then under postal code, enter the hotel postal code and press GO

Bingo! Now, pick the first cache and have a look at the map. There you will see all the nearby caches by with an overhead view. Much easier.

    Hope this helps a bit...

That is one of the rubs. The hotel doesn't come up with the postal code when I did the search. Either that or I don't recognize it. They do look different than down here. Again I am new to this whole geo thing. :)

Is this the address ?11 Colonel By Drive, K1N 9H4 Ottawa (Ontario). If so the postal code is k1n 9h4

The postal code is always written as follows: letter, number, letter, space, number, letter, number ex:j3a 1r7
