  1. My Garmin Venture cx will not power up when power button is pushed. Replaced batteries. Any ideas??
  2. I found a night cache near Lufkin, Texas....in daylight. Instructions were given as how to follow the "tacks". 1 tack-straight. 2 tacks-go left. 3 tacks-go right. 4 tacks-the cache. Finding the first tack was no problem so thereafter I just put my GPS away and followed the tacks. The cache has been archived now because it was on land that required a fee. But my point is: has anyone else found a night cache in daylight???

  4. If you get a phone call from someone who is caching and they ask for a hint or where a cache actually is located, what do you tell them? Do you give them the information? Maybe the owner doesn't appreciate you giving out info on their caches.
  5. What is the $57 fee for? Nothing in the text references a fee. The fee is for the permit.
  6. Here is something we found on the web that we didn't know. Has anyone else seen it?? It seems to pretain to ALL national forests. The fee is $57 per year. FOREST SERVICE MANUAL SOUTHERN REGION (REGION 8) ATLANTA, GA FSM 2700 – SPECIAL USES MANAGEMENT CHAPTER 2720 – SPECIAL USES ADMINISTRATION Supplement No.: 2700-2006-1 Effective Date: April 4, 2006 Duration: This supplement is effective until superseded or removed. Approved: CHARLES L. MYERS, Regional Forester Date Approved: 03/20/2006 2724.44 - Treasure Hunting 1. This designation includes the temporary placement of personal property for the purpose of geo-caching. 36 CFR 261.10(a) requires a special use authorization for occupancy and use of National Forest system land. This is further supported by 36 CFR 261.10(e) that prohibits abandoning personal property on National Forest system land. 2. Screen proposals to locate traditional (physical) caches using 36 CFR 251.54. Authorize traditional caches on FS 2700-5 Temporary Special Use Permit. The GPS coordinates of the caches must be included on the permit. Charge the regional minimum fee. 3. Traditional cache containers shall not exceed 12” on any side (height, width, or depth). Containers must be non-breakable, animal resistant, and have a closing mechanism to prohibit content exposure to wildlife and the environment. Containers must be permanently marked with the Holder’s permit ID, Name, address, and telephone number. Caches may not contain food, alcohol, tobacco, weapons of any type, fireworks, drugs, or other similar items. Caches may not be buried or hidden under water. Caches may not be placed in dangerous, inappropriate, or protected areas and habitats. 4. Virtual caches do not require an authorization. A virtual cache is a physical object that can be referenced through latitude and longitude. A virtual cache could be a geologic or unique feature or unusual landmark. Encourage use of virtual caches opposed to traditional caches. 5. Activities similar to geo-caching (for example, GPS Stash Hunt, Benchmark Hunting, Letterboxing, Geo-Poker) shall be administered in accordance with Geocaching. Competitive events involving a participation fee will be authorized as a recreation event. 6. The activity of searching for geo-caches is a personal recreation pursuit and does not require an authorization. 7. Forests may adopt more restrictive policy on geocaching activities, such as restricting geocaching to virtual caches only.

  10. Hmmmmmmmmmmm............I was thinking more along the lines of a game on disk not online. One I could pop into my computer just like any other computer game.
  11. Mousetrap "Catchy" name and it makes a good nametag at events. Just snap it on shirt. Was at an event once when another cacher walks up and says, "You have a mousetrap on your shirt". (Then the light comes on.) "Ooooooooohhh"!!!!
  12. Has any of the smart programmers there at Groundspeak thought about creating a caching computer game for shut-ins or handicap folks?? It would be great for times when we couldn't get out there in the field for real caching. It could be a teaching tool for beginners too.
  13. The cache page canges are fine with me and look good BUT......there is a text box on the right side that extends from top to bottom of the page that shoves everything to the left. This makes things uncentered. I like my cache pages to be centered. Just picky I guess. Call me Monk.
  14. Here is one in Nacogdoches, Texas. GCN49C. It has been archived though.
  15. Say you have a cache that has been at the same location for about 2 years. You decide to move it somewhere else. Same name, same log, same container, same contents, everything the same. If you had found this cache before at the old location and then find it again at the new location, would this be considered a new cache and a new find??? Has different GC#. ....and the old cache has been archived.
  16. YES!! THAT GOT IT. Man I've been working on that for a week. Thanks again--whoever you are. Ed
  17. Thanks for the reply. Well--it almost works. Closest I've gotten so far. I get "page cannot be found" but that's pretty darn good. Now just gotta find out why the page can't be found. I'm wondering if geocaching.com recognizes java script. Should, shouldn't it?? Again--thanks. Ed
  18. <select name="target"> <option value="url" selected>SELECT</option> <option value= "http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=0884d739-d9c4-4811-a31a-f3181a7df65e"> puzzle</option> <option value= "http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=bb3c0a05-688a-4408-9a01-94c715579c19"> dejavu</option> <option value= "http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=62b55ae0-d433-4d7f-bc3e-c09fe2fb960e"> farther back</option></select> <form><input type="image" src="gobutton2.gif" width="26" height="26" border="0"></form> Any programmers out there?? I am trying to place a select button on a cache page leading other cachers to some of my other cache pages. The above program ALMOST works. I have 3 selections: PUZZLE, DEJAVU,and FARTHER BACK. the images appear on the cache page but when I make a selection, it returns to the page I have the button on. It will not go the the selected page. Also, the "GO" button works but does not show as a go button. I am not a programmer. The program was copied from the web with my modifications. Can anyone point out what is wrong hare?? Thanks.
  19. What you're looking for, to print your own barcodes, is a "barcode font". Barcode is in no way standard. There's a TON of different formats. A Code39 (or "3 of 9" code) is fairly common, and there are a bunch of free fonts that you would then generate from your wordprocessor of choice. Here's one I've used in the past: http://www.barcodesinc.com/free-barcode-font/ To read barcode, you're going to either need to learn the code, or find a scanner. If you post a picture of it, I can read a few dozen of the fairly common ones on-sight. I also have a 2D scanner that will read the complicated styles (like you see on a fed-ex package for example) and decode many of them...
  20. I sure did like those Google maps they had on the pages there for awhile. Which do you prefer, Google or MapQuest??
  21. I would get a tad miffed if I went to search for a cache and found out it was an unexpected multi. That being said: *How accurate is your GPSr that you can get different coordinates a couple feet away? *What are the chances that someone searching for the cache would find the second stage before the first? *If I'm searching for a cache listed as standard size, and I see something that is micro-size laying there, I might CITO the micro thinking that it's just trash. Well--maybe not reporting it as a micro is a bad idea. If they find second stage first--no problem. Their good fortune. I'm just wondering about the hunters confusion when he enters the coords of second stage. I have hunted caches with micros all around saying things like "Nope, not here", "Keep looking.", etc.
  22. What is your opinion of this kind of cache???? Ever see one like it??? It would be a two stage but not reported as such on the cache page. That's the deception. The stages would be in the same location. One a micro not hidden very well with coords to second stage that is hidden very well and only a couple feet away. Maybe when the searcher enters coords into GPSr he would not notice closeness of coords then when he searches he would wonder what he did wrong.
  23. I see two problems with this. First he didnt sign the log, and second his log is a big hint which I dont want. I already encrypted it but should I delete it?? Also, the encryption doesnt seem to work on the main page-only on the view this log page. Whats up with that?? If there is a way to email this person, I'd give him a chance or two to fix the problem. If he doesn't respond, then delete. If not email then maybe a posted note to him.
