  1. Hi, good question? If you have an interesting photo and you go caching - submit it :)

but these one's are NOT for cover shots, see link above if you want to submit a photo

for possible selection to go on the cover.. Thanks

Does it have to be a photo of me caching? Can't you just put a photo of me on the cover?

  2. Depends where you go geocaching.. I have one and it's brilliant and much more accurate and sensitive than my iphone4 and android, but the phones are great for most applications and 80% of my caching is now found just via the smartphone. I use the GPS for hunting in the woods or when I need better battery life (hiking & camping overnight), as I get about 18 hours from 2AA in the GPS.

    Hope that helps.

  3. I nearly always post a photo of TB's for the owner, usually in a way I hope they enjoy. I get enjoyment out of seeing photo's for my TB's.. Yes not many do it.. but I really appreciate the one's that do and I normally make the effort to email them to say Thanks.

    Hi,

So Im new to all this but confused.

Each time I collect a travel bug and look at it online it almost always says "take pictures of the journey" BUT there are never more than 1 or 2 pics on the webpage.

Is it that I cannot see the pictures ? Or do people not bother taking pictures ?

I dont have a premium account yet, only a basic member.

    Thanks

  4. No I've never previously heard of them. But yes I'd be happy to move any item along if that's it mission.. and obviously log it, discover it etc..

    Sounds interesting..

I have searched the forums, for a "Geokrety"...found a few posts.. how ever none were in English, (Well one was but did not touch on my topic much)

Seems these trackables are popular in Europe, seen a polish, german, post.

    So my question is this...

I figure it's free...free is good....so why has it not caught on here in North America in general?

I just sort of stumbled across one, and was like WOW! I have a bucket of what I call "TB Wanna B's", have like 30 of them, figured if I had a few extra $'s I would get em' tagged and on their way, well been nearly a three year collection, and the $'s well they go into the tank and other people's pockets, IE BILLS.

So I came across this g-krety, have logged a great deal of em, they have a tracking number, and in my eye's are now ready to be a trackable.

    My poll is this:

Have you heard of the krety? Would you (Here in North America) if you found one, would you move it, log it much like a TB, discover it etc?

I am putting them out, got 7 ducks on a race, and the other 20ish well they go where ever, just wanted to get a perspective on how these will be considered by the general community... I usually will log anything that is labeled as a trackable.

    K..

  5. I use NiMH batteries and although more expensive, I picked up 8 with chargers for about $40 and they've lasted well in my devices including GPS and sometime video game controllers etc.. and can be easily topped up via a cig lighter adapter really cheap on the go.. good luck

I have a Garmin Oregon 450 so I'm going to AA batteries like crazy. I don't mind the battery life on this device, it's far better than some of the horror stories I've seen on this forum in the past. I just want to reduce costs and ideally increase battery-life between changing.

What I've done 99% so far is just use regular AA batteries (my wife bought a HUGE package at Costco). These work pretty well and well within expectations. While driving around on a vacation recently, I had to stop in a convenience store for batteries & drinks. The only AA they had there were MUCH better than the normal ones I get. They were Energizer "advanced lithium" batteries. Lighter (weight) and longer battery life.

So, now that I'm back from vacation and finally starting to run low in that costco package, I'm considering what I'll do next. I can either bulk purchase these new batteries **OR** go with rechargable. If the latter, I know very little about them.

    Thoughts/opinions?

  6. I like the basic idea. I'm not sure how many premium caches are in our area and if they are big enough to fit a TB.. but i understand it's frustrating. I use a TB Safe house program via my magazine subscribers that we trade TB's directly, travel around with them for awhile, then move them on to the next subscriber.. it protects some of our bugs.. but i also release one's into the wild..

    Cheers

    This is the best strategy.

Choose a traveler that is noncollectable as possible. Ugly bugs live longer.

Make sure the traveler can stand up to harsh conditions.

Choose a mission that is less about the direction it goes and more about the finder sharing the experience. If the finder has to decide if they will be 'heading east' any time soon just to move your bug they probably won't pick it up. On the flip side if your mission is to 'just move from cache to cache' the finder doesn't have much incentive to assist your bug and might just to decide to place it whenever they can get to it. If you can grab their interest they'll be more likely to move it along.

Include a laminated mission tag so the finder knows in the field what you expect from them.

    Include clear logging instructions.

Use a strong cable to secure the traveler, dogtag and mission tag together

Release the bug and forget about it. If you hear from it once every three months, it's doing just fine.

  7. Sure, my very first find with my daughter. The shop owner obviously had seen a few geocachers that go over to the spot near the wall looking around... came out and said "You need something to stand on to see it.. not sure what it is but lots of people go over there!"

Gave us a smile and a laugh.. although we thought we were masters of stealth! They could obviously see us easily through the shop window :)

  8. Did you keep the co-ords we could look it up and see if it's a premium only..

Today I stumbled upon a cache. I was working and not really looking for one. When I looked inside the container I saw I was the first one to find it. I contacted the owner but have not heard back. I cannot find the cache on this website. Now what?

  10. Hi,

Welcome. Glad to have another geocacher on board. Good to hear you have enjoyed yourself. Even a couple of hides already! Although those peaceful places might not be so peaceful anymore.. there'll be cachers checking them out... :)

Good luck with your other finds..

    Cheers

  11. Good luck. Hope you achieve your goal. Sounds like a cool milestone plan. Would certainly be interested in hearing your progress as you get closer. Thanks.

I was planning on finding 60 caches on my 60th birthday at the end of October, then I thought that seeing as I am close to 1,570 finds atm, maybe if I upped my find rate I could combine the 60 finds in one day with achieving 2,000 finds as well. So from now until late October I will need to find about 370 caches. A bit of an ask, as up until now my annual average has been around 500.

  12. I thought you'd made a typo.. but you didn't. WOW... 16000 congratulations.. and even 200 hides.. well done. I'd like to put some of your favourites in my milestones feature in my magazine if you'd like to send some pictures etc.. either way, appreciate the post. Thanks.

Yesterday I just hit 16000 with having one of our year 2000 caches as my milestone. Firestone. #3 in California #46 in the world

  13. Thank you. Will do. :)

Wow. You weren't kidding. Nice long log, although I like longer "story" type logs.

Mind if I use your log in the mag? :)

    Thanks for the post.

I like picking out special caches for major milestones and have had a lot of good times doing so. #4000 was especially adventurous however and is my longest log ever.

    Sure, go ahead. :)

  14. Now that's interesting. I don't remember what my first DNF was, but we found one the last week that was one that we'd looked for almost every time we went past and almost gave up again and then we got it.. it was certainly a DNF type milestone feeling.. getting one off the list we'd thought we're never going to find. Thanks for the post.

Finally finding what was our first DNF was neat. A milestone of sorts. Reaching triple digits was something we couldn't imagine in the beginning - but I couldn't tell you which cache it was without checking. Into the 4 digits, and I still love finding places I would never have known if it weren't for our hobby. First nano was a milestone, as was an extremely well camouflaged lock and lock.
