  1. The site shows 548 active DNF logs. Unlike Marky, I don't actually log all my DNFs, though.
  2. Aha, a "secret" message from the geocaching gods. I found it! Now, maybe I can get one of them to change my cache's name so that it doesn't say "disabled"? When did editing a cache name become a premium member feature? http://www.geocaching.com/hide/report.aspx...84-d05f7d8979d4

  6. Both my caching teammate and I use the T-Mobile SideKick (AKA Danger HipTop). Device: These things are really pretty great. The phone works ok, but the part that really shines is the data features. The IM, email, and web browser are all really usable. I have logged TBs and finds using it, and it works well, if a bit slowly at times. Downside: The do break. I have gone through many of them, but T-Mobile keeps replacing them free, so it's not a huge problem. The new version is somewhat more robust than the old one. Service: The are availible on T-Mobile only. I've found them to be price competitive with everyone else, esp. when it comes to data. They screw up just as much as any other carrier, but their customer service has been more reasonable and decent about making things right. As for coverage, I live in SF and spend a reasonable ammount of time in Berkeley, Oakland, and Burlingame. They cover everywhere I find myself quite well. It fits in pretty well with my caching, too. If you keep your GPSr nearby, it's great to be able to run off and cache with no planning, as you can look everything up on your phone. I've found Geocaching.com to be suprisingly usable even with the weird browser and small screen. If you've got any specific questions, just hollar. Cheers, SoFauxBoho of Yokohama Underground. I think T-Mobile has pretty lousy coverage. It would be pretty lame to use almost anything besides a Sidekick for logging caches from the field; so you're pretty much stuck with T-Mobile. Coverage in Palo Alto should be pretty good (Danger is located in Palo Alto too), but coverage up in the hills is going to be spotty, and I've found that coverage even in Atherton is sometimes touch and go.
  7. Okay, I guess I don't have more DNFs than Finds. But I have logged over 500 DNFs.
  8. I live in San Jose and cache solo a lot. Occasionally I can be convinced to partner up. I might not be good luck, though. Last weekend I joined Beckerbuns and her two boys, and both of them ended up rolling down a hill. Oh, and I'm pretty much the worst cache finder in the world.
  9. Woof! created this cache because she knows I hate making phone calls. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCKYWG Anyone wanna help me thwart her by going to Buster's (191 South Highland) and reading the coordinates off that telephone booth for me? Thx, kablooey

I think the forums should be made members only. Then the nonmembers would have to pay to complain.
  11. Today only, Fry's has 128MB Secure Digital cards for free (after $20 mail-in rebate, tax not included, limit one per customer, while supplies last, no rainchecks, etc.). These are the memory cards used in the Meridian series. While I was there, I also picked up a book called Digital Photography Hacks (also free after $20 rebate).
  12. I don't really like those 5k things. I can do that geocaching. I do occasionally see people hiking, but they usually just say "hi" and walk off.
  13. Oh, one last comment. It really is not a whole lot of fun ending up with a DNF. Yeah, there are some exceptions, but when the hider doesn't seem to want to offer any help with finding a cache or goes out of his way to make a cache harder to find just to see DNF logs, things can be a lot more frustrating than fun. I try to remember that when I hide my own caches, but I forget a lot too, and I apologize to those who end up with DNFs on my caches.
  14. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe it's different in this area. When you've found less than 2% of the caches hidden in the area (with 100 miles) and start hiding a large number of caches, it's not surprising that your caches might be found to be inconsistent with other hides that people are used to. Not that being innovative is a bad thing, either. This is not the first time it has happened in the Bay Area, and no doubt won't be the last. The community will survive. I've only attempted two of CompuCash's hides. The first was a multicache. I couldn't get past the first stage, which required finding coordinates hidden in an undescribed way somewhere amongst a lot of spiderwebs and dog poop. I haven't been back there since. The other was allegedly a multicache, but I ended up finding the final stage about thirty feet from the coordinates given on the web page. It later turned out that the wrong coordinates had been posted on the web page, they've been since corrected.
  15. Sign up, show up, and walk the 5k. Then sign up for another one, show up, and walk again. Keep doing it. Even if you can't run it, at least you're out there doing it. I can't run the entire thing either. Yet. I've never actually "met" anyone on a 5K walk/run. I'm too shy. I could probably meet somebody at a dance class, but I don't really have any desire to go to a dance class.
  16. subterranean: Hmm, I've logged DNFs on my own caches before. Should I be able to log a Found when I find the cache eventually (because it got moved)? Maybe it should just say "Visited". That way all it's saying is that the cache is there. Actually, there have been quite a few occasions where I haven't been able to find a cache that I've found before. Maybe I do have Alzheimer's.
  17. If you want the elevation gain, make sure to hike Almaden Quicksilver Mines by starting at the Hacienda trailhead. You can cool off when you get to the San Cristobal Mine shaft. I'd been waiting for cooler weather to do Trifecta, but the sudden rainpour on Sunday wasn't exactly the kind of cooler weather I was planning on. Maybe this weekend?
  18. I can't actually run 5k. I've tried a couple of times. Is that a negative?
  19. I always go caching on Sunday. Perhaps that's part of my problem.
  20. Oh well, I hope Tovah has a pleasant winter. We'll try to set up a rescue mission in the spring. I've been looking for an excuse to rent a canoe.
  21. As another possiblity for goal-oriented hiking, I'm led to believe that there are a number of hikes involved with the Return of the King multicache. I haven't gotten past the first stage of this one yet; so I can't verify.
  22. I would probably also add Geo-Ca$h to Team Nazgul's list, although this one doesn't give views of Silicon Valley, as Mission Peak is in the way.
  23. Did a little caching near Summit Road yesterday. Missed that cache (it's members-only; so I'm not really sure where it is).
  24. Okay, so I finally tried this out in the field tonight on a virtual. Heh. I found that there's no way to email the hider. So, I had to revert back to the normal site anyway.
  25. Woohoo! A non-Javascript-required version of the site. I can actually once again see the second page of a nearest search! (Too bad the f=1 parameter doesn't work, though.) I really like how there are text equivalents for the type, rating, and Foundit icons, as these don't appear on the normal site, and you get nothing if you turn off images because of a slow internet connection. Suggestions: Allow nearest search based on waypoint ID. Provide search by name.
