  1. For best reception in gps get the gps/glonass combo.....set it too gps/glonass with Waas On... amazing accuracy.... I use a Monterra which is awesome..compared to my wifes Oregon 600T or my Montana 610 or older 600T I owned... The glonass is the way to go now. Phones have it as well now..at least some of them. My wifes Oregon does do a nice job for what it is for sure..that would be my second choice. I'm in the same group not to use a phone.. only dedicated gps... many pro's not much con's.. I've used all Garmin handhelds since 1998.. many of them.. This Monterra is the best.. so far. It's larger but no issue carrying it in my pouch..and receives A1 while stowed away due to Glonass/Waas. When in the woods or canyons you need all the help you can get.. the processor will select which is the best for making the data you need.
  2. Incorrect. Battery save mode just turns off the screen after a set time of inactivity. Information is still being collected, but drawing and refreshing the map on the screen is a big source of power consumption. Battery save must be similar to the forced pressing (sleep) of the lower button under the shut off button then? Not sure if it's the same thing..or if you touch the screen it comes back? I see if it's forced to sleep via the lower button touching the screen doesn't do anything it still sleeps but records etc. still. My Monterra does the same.
  3. Do yourself a favor...stay away from the Magellan. go buy a Garmin Oregon 600T.... and you won't be disapointed. Lot's of folks here have them. Can't go wrong. Can't get any better ..on on and on.. If you get off on the wrong gps you'll never get it right. Or loose interest and or get a wrong impression. The Oregon will hold it's value real well if you want to sell it sometime.... My wife has one and I love it. We bought it a couple of weeks ago at Cabelas for $300 in store price. If you buy it online at Amazon it's only $368 with a return policy if you don't like it. Cabelas has a 60 day return.
  4. I've owned a new Monterra for over a month now and it has been a great unit. Put it thru heck and it's panned out fine... I did add Apex Launcher to get the icons larger that's it... Much brighter screen in the day light and at night then the Oregon 600T that my wife bought..
  5. We bought the Oregon 600T on sale there last weekend for $300 .. Cablelas in Maine.
  6. I got my new Monterra last night. Went out for a hike...recorded fine. I saved the track in it. I have a few issues I would like resolved if anyone can help me with. 1. BaseCamp can't see the tracks in it I saved. I used My Computer in Win7 to look into the Monterra and found them in the GPS file. I copied and pasted it into base Camp.. The waypoints I loaded into it show ok. 2. I don't get any beeps..shutting down or turning on etc. What I worry is if the battery or loss of gps signal I'd get no warning beep. I checked the settings a few times for any sound or command and all seems in order.. 3. Wish the icons could be made larger like in the Montana menu options... working with gloves won't work on my man's hands. I like it so far very much...and hope I can tweak it so it is a great unit. I read a review and he said he got only 3 hrs out of it. Well with google, wifi etc off except for Garmins apts it doesn't drain at all. I ran it all night last night and it didn't use any energy. It goes into sleep mode but keeps recording the track or navigating. I like that. I can tuck it away and the screen won't come on at all when touching against the pouch, etc. I used the "Touch Lock" mode on the power button for that. I owned many gps's including a Montana 600 610T... This is a nicer unit I feel so far except for some tweeks I mentioned.
  7. I am about to try one as well.... I recently used a Montana 600 and now a 610T which is being returned. Garmin is sending a brand new one. It Crashed alot and after recharging or transferring data it wouldn't start up with out taking the battery out and reinstalling it. I could not get the unit to do a hard reset as well. Yesterday it finally won't start up at all. Never Never had issues with the Montana 600..I wanted Glonass and glad I have it as it's so nice but dadgum it .
  8. I would make a waypoint with the track name at the beginning of the track or along it and have it show on the map screen.
  9. great...thanks...never thought of it that way..
  10. When it is working perfectly (most of the time) it is a treasure..... Hopefully you won't be plagued with too many issues! Do yourself a favour and consider upgrading the battery pack - I changed out my supplied pack for a pair of Eneloop Pros - battery life has increased by 2-3x (conservative estimate). I'm curious if the Eneloop's can be charged in the gps...I have a great charger for Eneloops but wonder doing it the other way if needed.
  11. That may be your problem right there, especially if the trail to or from the parking lot is steep. The problem is that the barometric pressure is read from inside the GPS unit, with a very small hole to allow air in and out. It generally takes a few minutes for the pressure to equilibrate. Try not turning off the GPS immediately upon return; leave it stationary on top of your car for 5 minutes before and after the hike and see if you get better results. Do you know were the hole is? I heard in the battery compartment. But it's sealed for waterproofing. I'm just looking to get a true or should I say more stable ascent descent. Not so much having the real elevation at any giving time and place. But this hike I mentioned I was walking fairly level once down for at least 15 minutes so I would of thought it would of updated. The first way point is off as the last way point. With missing data. This is the beginning. Notice 3 seconds and a drop in altitude. And that the elevation is lower then the return even into ten minutes of walking.The return is what the trail head elevation is. Not 883 ft. Seems the altimeter is sensitive and not always right on. Some hikes it's been fine. The summit elevation was very close. I found the benchmark fine.. I like to find benchmarks,etc. Notice # 3333 below how within 3 seconds the elvation jumped as I saved or whatever. 1 3/27/2016 8:39:16 AM 1298 ft 1 ft 0:00:05 0.1 mph 197° mag N43 59.655 W71 22.165 2 3/27/2016 8:39:21 AM 883 ft 1 ft 0:00:05 0.2 mph 120° mag N43 59.655 W71 22.165 3 3/27/2016 8:39:26 AM 885 ft 0 ft 0:00:05 0.1 mph 133° mag N43 59.655 W71 22.165 4 3/27/2016 8:39:31 AM 883 ft 2 ft 0:00:05 0.2 mph 114° mag N43 59.655 W71 22.165 5 3/27/2016 8:39:36 AM 884 ft 3 ft 0:00:05 0.4 mph 119° mag N43 59.655 W71 22.165 6 3/27/2016 8:39:41 AM 885 ft 1 ft 0:00:05 0.2 mph 42° mag N43 59.655 W71 22.164 7 3/27/2016 8:39:46 AM 886 ft 6 ft 0:00:05 0.8 mph 323° mag N43 59.655 W71 22.164 8 3/27/2016 8:39:51 AM 887 ft 4 ft 0:00:05 0.5 mph 28° mag N43 59.656 W71 22.165 9 3/27/2016 8:39:56 AM 888 ft 2 ft 0:00:05 0.3 mph 316° mag N43 59.656 W71 22.165 10 3/27/2016 8:40:01 AM 890 ft 2 ft 0:00:05 0.2 mph 350° mag N43 59.656 W71 22.165 11 3/27/2016 8:40:06 AM 891 ft 1 ft 0:00:05 0.1 mph 221° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.165 12 3/27/2016 8:40:11 AM 892 ft 2 ft 0:00:05 0.3 mph 244° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.165 13 3/27/2016 8:40:16 AM 893 ft 2 ft 0:00:05 0.3 mph 259° mag N43 59.656 W71 22.166 14 3/27/2016 8:40:21 AM 894 ft 2 ft 0:00:05 0.3 mph 1° mag N43 59.656 W71 22.166 15 3/27/2016 8:40:26 AM 895 ft 3 ft 0:00:05 0.4 mph 35° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.166 16 3/27/2016 8:40:31 AM 896 ft 4 ft 0:00:05 0.5 mph 281° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.166 17 3/27/2016 8:40:36 AM 897 ft 2 ft 0:00:05 0.3 mph 289° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.167 18 3/27/2016 8:40:41 AM 898 ft 2 ft 0:00:05 0.2 mph 295° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.167 19 3/27/2016 8:40:46 AM 899 ft 3 ft 0:00:05 0.4 mph 83° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.168 20 3/27/2016 8:40:51 AM 900 ft 1 ft 0:00:05 0.1 mph 130° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.167 21 3/27/2016 8:40:56 AM 901 ft 1 ft 0:00:05 0.2 mph 173° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.167 22 3/27/2016 8:41:01 AM 902 ft 8 ft 0:00:05 1.1 mph 145° mag N43 59.657 W71 22.167 23 3/27/2016 8:41:06 AM 903 ft 19 ft 0:00:05 3 mph 156° mag N43 59.656 W71 22.165 24 3/27/2016 8:41:11 AM 904 ft 20 ft 0:00:05 3 mph 167° mag N43 59.654 W71 22.163 25 3/27/2016 8:41:16 AM 906 ft 18 ft 0:00:05 2 mph 182° mag N43 59.651 W71 22.161 26 3/27/2016 8:41:21 AM 907 ft 10 ft 0:00:05 1.4 mph 194° mag N43 59.648 W71 22.160 27 3/27/2016 8:41:26 AM 908 ft 17 ft 0:00:05 2 mph 204° mag N43 59.646 W71 22.160 28 3/27/2016 8:41:31 AM 909 ft 21 ft 0:00:05 3 mph 187° mag N43 59.644 W71 22.160 29 3/27/2016 8:41:36 AM 910 ft 19 ft 0:00:05 3 mph 191° mag N43 59.640 W71 22.159 30 3/27/2016 8:41:41 AM 911 ft 19 ft 0:00:05 3 mph 186° mag N43 59.637 W71 22.159 31 3/27/2016 8:41:46 AM 912 ft 12 ft 0:00:05 2 mph 174° mag N43 59.634 W71 22.158 32 3/27/2016 8:41:51 AM 913 ft 7 ft 0:00:05 0.9 mph 185° mag N43 59.632 W71 22.157 Looks like this at the end..notice the last point..3 seconds 300 plus ft difference and no leg length. 3330 3/27/2016 1:16:50 PM 1278 ft 1 ft 0:00:05 0.1 mph 293° mag N43 59.661 W71 22.168 3331 3/27/2016 1:16:55 PM 1278 ft 1 ft 0:00:05 0.1 mph 84° mag N43 59.661 W71 22.168 3332 3/27/2016 1:17:00 PM 1278 ft 2 ft 0:00:03 0.4 mph 133° mag N43 59.662 W71 22.168 3333 3/27/2016 1:17:03 PM 1595 ft N43 59.661 W71 22.168
  12. I found what I needed I bet here in this posting....My link
  13. How can I attach it? Also in searching here I found many brain twisting postings on elevation accuracy via auto calibrate etc. I believe my trouble could be in that it is due to the auto calibrate mode which can change elevation during start up mode as I look back at some older tracks the same issue is there. Even in my Montana 600. Now I have the 610 which I do find is better tracking on the ground then the 600 due to Glonass. But odd how when I got back from to the parking lot I always stop and save the track before I do anything else then shut it down. When I get home I load the track into Mapsourse. I also take a screen shot before shutting it off. Now the trip computer said I did 2010 ft total ascent. The hike is supposed to be around 1400 ft. Funny thing is when I load the track into Nat Geo Topo State Series it shows a different and more accurate ascent. I am going to go thru my old gps tracks of my 60cx 62s Montana 600 and see if any of them do the same in regards to elevation errors. I have always had a external antenna on the top of my pack with the gps in a pouch on my chest. So the use of carrying is the same. But this Montana seems to be way off in Total ascent so far to me. This I would like to work out for some better results.
  14. I read a review in GPSTrack log on the Montana and one of the Con's is the Altimeter... I hear what your saying...but the track I had recorded showed the last track point was 200 ft off the 3 sec previous one in the same spot. All the ones leading to the last one was consistent and true. I don't know if during the saving track process distorts the last track point? I'm more interested in the total ascents of the day verses exact elevation. So I should set it manually at the trail head? One website suggested that.
  15. I notice on my Montana 610 ( and Montana 600) that the first track point and last track point will have Elevation differences of a few hundred feet. Which set's the total ascent off. It doesn't do it all the time but frequently. I am careful to run it on the way to the trail head to get warmed up. I reset it in the open view just as I leave the trail head. Keep it running all day then when back to the care save the track. Then shut it off. The funny thing is it's just the first and last track point is off. The other points recorded every 3 sec's show consistent and correct elevation. Is there a way to set the Altimeter to eliminate this so the total Ascent will be accurate.
  16. I've owned 2 Montana's...loved them..and have the Montana 610 now because of Glonass. Never used a Oregon. I Have owned many gpsr's over the years.. including a 60cx type. What is big? The Montana weigh's just a few onces more..I just like the larger screen. Easy to see and use. I keep it in a pouch from Garmin on my day pack with an external antenna.. stays safe and will keep recording and maintaining a fix. You can get holders like the one from Ram as well or clips for it or use the lanyard system from Garmin. I use it in my snowmachine as well as hiking, etc.
  17. If the track log is like my Montana 610T You save it and it will show in track manager. You can find the tracks by sorting menu( 3 bars). Alphabetical, nearest, etc.
  18. I upgraded from a Montana 600 to the 610..Glonass does a better job for sure.. I got good money for my 600 on Ebay so I'm happy.. They'll come out with fixes for sure in short order. Just keep sending them into Garmin and check the box to allow them to see your unit's behavior. It gets analyzed and sorted out with others.
  19. I agree with Mapsource...it has a lot to offer over base camp...I use both and still use Mapsource often. I will always use it. Still don't like BaseCamp. I have to use it because MS won't transfer some data. But I have to convert for MS then it's ok. Don't ya love the way it doesn't center the map when using the zoom cursor in BaseCamp..You MS users know what I mean as MS centers were you click.. I could go on about Base Camp all day and it's lack of features that Ms has. And another is how MS has a great category system to use. Simple.
  20. I understand all of that back in 1996 when I got a Northstar Commerical gps..and of the many handhelds etc since. I can tell you the Glonass/gps combo is more accurate. In comparing the tracks it clearly shows a more precise and realistic track compared to my 6 other tracks with just gps. And the thing that sells me is when I have my usual lunch at the end and sit on the same rock the drifting of points is much much tighter compared to then non Glonass/combo. Same pack same everything. I've read extensively about Glonass and it really shines when used with Gps. As you know especially within a Canyon like environment. Such as my multible track comparison hike mentioned above.
  21. Yes, somewhere there's an option to not delete the track upon saving, though I can't remember off the top of my head. I'll look at my Oregon later if nobody else comes up with a more specific reply. But yes, that option exists. It must be "save a portion" option then it keeps recording. But I hope it doesn't delete the "saved portion". I'll have to experiment. I used it on a trail I have recorded before 4 times and saved tracks with my Montana 600 and this 610 is more precise. This is what I was looking for in upgrading. And my 3 yr old Montana 600 fetched $350 which is great. So I got a new and more accurate unit for $150 more..I'm pleased.
  22. I have used this new track menu and mostly it has been fine for my liking. But can I save the track and not have it be erased in the "current track" ? My Montana 600 could as the older Garmin hand helds.. Maybe doing "save a portion?" would do it?
  23. I have the 64 GB card in my 610 and it works fine. It is formatted OEM to Xfat I believe. But it accepted maps, etc.
  24. Thanks... It's what I figured...I noticed the 610 doesn't put down the same amount track points that my 600 did on the same hike I did this weekend. I had 4 saved 600 tracks to compare too. I had it set to most often as well. The 610 had put 940 points and the 600 4 saved showed close and consistent to 1400 points. And the lines of the track were on the outside of the other track lines. This is when zoomed in in Mapsource. You can see it very clearly in Mapsource these lines but not in BaseCamp.
