Cross Installing Tracks Garmin To Magellan?
capt caper replied to capt caper's topic in GPS technology and devices
Thanks Does Mapsource only work with Garmins? As far as what I asked? To be able to send the Garmin saved tracks, etc. from Mapsource to a Magellan? I don't recall seeing any settings for other brands like in other programs I have. Jim -
Hi If I bought a Magellan or a freind had a Magellan, is there a way I would be able to use the waypoints, routes, active tracks I have saved on my pc made by a Garmin I have to send to a Magellan when I needed them ? I'd hate to lose all those saved tracks, etc. Maybe a software program that was neutral like GPS Trackmaker? Jim

I don't think my 76S has battery saver at all that I can find anywhere. I think originaly it was suppose to have it but the upgrades did away with it? Maybe someone will prove me wrong. Jim

The unit will keep trying to find the sat and lock on and will use extra battery power to try so from what I've read. Better off shutting it down. Also like I said earlier I use a external antenna from Titan III for my 76S and never lose fix and always find good accuracy even down in revines. But that's when I'm hiking. were not usually in a reveine all day and the WAAS correction is still applied for a while as long as at some point earlier you had a good lock onto it. Hope this helped.

I agree and update your firmware for sure. On one of my GPS 76S's I didn't have a good clear shot of the sky and my WAAS almanac never worked it's way to a good fix. Actually it wouldn''t lock on to #35 like it should here in the NorthEast, it found 33 and that isn't recieved very well or would it stay locked good. I would leave it out for a couple of hours and still no #35. Anyway what I did was give it a master reset as Garmin instructs at the site. I made sure I have a clear view of the sky and gave it it's 3/4 of an hour to build a new almanac. It found #35 and has locked on to it ever since. Hope this helps.

Busted Plastic Window On Sportrak Map
capt caper replied to da11as's topic in GPS technology and devices
Tough break man. I'd call them and tell them it broke carrying it around and ask if that would be coverd in warrenty. These manufactors try to go out of there way to please us and sometimes skip over the details and get you back into their product. It doesn't cost them much I would guess to fix that. Besides maybe it is engineered a little too thin and they have had others like it happen and are taking part of the responsiblity. Who know's? It doesn't cost anything for a phone call. -
Loading Mapsource Topo Maps On The Hard Drive
capt caper replied to SoonerKats's topic in GPS technology and devices
My Eastern folder is in the Western one. Try move the Eastern folder into Western. It's been a while so I can't remember exactly, but try that or reinstall. This time before you start setup move Eastern and Alaska if you'd like and move them to the western folder. Don't have them seperate in the Garmin/Mapsource folder. -
If you want just a good Topo map, National Geographic will let you import tracts from GPS. They will show on the map and then you can print them. Maptech out of Portsmith N.H. Has a Topo CD that can draw tracks and I believe they can transfer it also. I know Garmin's mapsource will allow the upload to Pc and put back track to gps at later date but won't let you draw it. Nationial Geographic will draw but won't transfer either saved or drawn tracks. I'd like to do the same. 125 waypoints along a trail is good but take time to make a route and not the same as 1000 points or more.

Loading Mapsource Topo Maps On The Hard Drive
capt caper replied to SoonerKats's topic in GPS technology and devices
I do the same. I make a folder copy 1'st disc to it in whole. Copy 2 disk in whole. Then open folder look for setup install and click to let it install itself. With National Geographic Topo Northeastern States you can load the setup first as usual then copy the other maps, to the data folder and your all set. With Garmin you have to do it the above way. I don't know what unit you have but I got a Titan III external antenna I use and it does a perfect job under all conditions hiking though out the White Mountains year round. It has more sensitiveity than stock 76S antenna and uses sat's better. Idid a lot of research about them and they do and will help. I have mine located on top of my pack and record every hike from start to finish. Useually up to 10 hours. The only time I break in reception is if I flip top back too long. While getting lunch, etc. Before the extennal antenna, no matter what I did I would lose reception. Same with the old GPS 48 I had. Capt.

Other Gpsr's On Sale When 60c Comes Out?
capt caper replied to MotherNature's topic in GPS technology and devices
I believe prices are all ready dropping aren't they? The 60cs will be about $100.00 more than 76S. Lot's of people won't or can't spend the extra money so the 76S won't drop to much and same goes for the others. Just my opinion -
What's The Color Screen Going To Be Like On 60c?
capt caper replied to capt caper's topic in GPS technology and devices
How do you think the screen do under cloudy, dark skys and tree cover ? That's great that it would be visable in sun. I was afraid they were going to use the same screen as the 176c which I've heard was too good. Did you get a look at the active track and how well it contrasts against the background? They say you can change colors of it. I hope that's true so one can adjust the track to stand out like a sore thumb. Like I said, the track line on the 76S was hard to read for me under some of those conditions. I can't seem to find anything on the webb that suggestts the same technology for sure to compare to. Some cell phones now have similar screens I think. But I can't find the exact wording in the spec's. Oh,well I'll have to wait. There is a boat show coming up in mid. Feb. in Boston so maybe I can check out one there. I can't wait. I love the 76S but for the display contrast's. Jim -
What's The Color Screen Going To Be Like On 60c?
capt caper replied to capt caper's topic in GPS technology and devices
IQue is 320 x 480 pixel, high-resolution, color display Garmin say's 16 bit. With white back light. The 60C is 8 bit tft. with 160x240 pixel I believe so already it looks like it might not be as good. I saw the Ique's and it was excellant. Although I didn't see it in the daylight, just inside a store. Jim -
What's The Color Screen Going To Be Like On 60c?
capt caper replied to capt caper's topic in GPS technology and devices
I agree, I did see the IQue and was impressed with screen. I will look again and try to see the similarites or differences between the two. Jim -
First,I'm glad I found this forum with some fellow heavy duty GPS users. What I'm wondering is is there a screen out there now in some unit or plam reader, etc. that will be similar to the new one coming with the 60C?I'd like to have a look and see what to expect. I have a 76S and don't like the contrast with the active track. I find it hard to see under clouds with some rain, etc. I tried adjusting contrast etc. So I'm looking forward to this color unit. Other than that it's a great unit. I've used a few older Garmins, and I own a Northstar 951XD also. And always had a deep contrast with those tracks. Thanks Jim

How Important Is A Built-in Electronic Compass?
capt caper replied to fiend's topic in GPS technology and devices
I use the gpsmap76S and find the compass a little too sensitive and off compared to my hand held on known points I've found. So I find it easier to take out the handheld and leave the electronic one off. I belileve it doesn't change any of the funtions while navigateing, those are from the sat's. JIm
