  1. I need an easy way of taking tracks I've saved, including active tracks in their entirety, into Mapsource from GPS76S and importing the file into Nat.GeoTopo so the track line shows up red ? The only way I know now would be to load them back into my new 60CS and have NGTopo recieve them. That would take a long time,I've got a lot of tracks saved over the years. And NGTopo doesn't have USB support so it would be even slower. It would be nice to convert the MPS file into one that NGTopo would take. Any suggestions? Jim
  2. I fixed it. Something jammed up somewhere. I shut down the GPS and restarted it and it recognized it. I had both the USB and Serial cable hooked up and was trying to down load tracks from Mapsource into gps so I could upload it into NGTopo via serial port. Maybe theres a better way like converting garmins track file so NGTopo will take it. I'll try again tonite and see if it jam's up again.
  3. I can't my 60CS to be recognized by Mapsource or NGTopo with the 4 pin serial cable. The USB with Mapsource works fine. I checked the cable and connection by hooking up my 76S which was recognized by both NGTopo and Mapsource. So those seem to be fine. Any suggestions? I tried with just the serial cable hooked up. Restarted Pc,etc. No luck.
  4. I've been using mine for 3 days now getting to know it and haven't had any trouble. I use PowerEx rechargables only. JIm
  5. I guess they made that way. The MCX's are suppose to snap in. I have two different elbows for the Titan III and one has a gold tip with a broader head area and it doesn't snap in and won't penetrate the 60cs good because of the broad head and recessed jack in the 60cs. And I have another MCX I got that has just a plain chrome tip and smaller head,by which I mean the square body the chrome plug comes out of, anyway that snaps in and is hard to get out with out prying with a small tool. I broke an MCX fitting in a 76S last year and Garmin fixed it. Lucky for me. The plug went in hard and I must of not lined up correctly while putting it in. I'm going to be careful with this one. I use an external all the time.
  6. Would Radio Shack sell something that fix's these problems? Springs in electronics going bad or weak, etc. isn't only been Garmins problem. They might have some cure all remedies
  7. Can it be replaced by you or are you going to have to send it in? They say to put a shim in instead of prying springs. Good Luck I just got mine and haven't had anytrouble with it in car or home but we'll see on the trail.
  8. I notice it's a snug fit. I thought it was in, but a little firmer push inward made it bottom out for the connection. I notice the extennal antenna jack is recessed further than the 76s and the antennas rubber cover is in the way some for the antenna jack. With the gps's jack recessed the right angle plug on the Titan III doesn't seem to get in far enough to make an good connection. One has to have a easy touch with this baby or big bucks to fix.
  9. Well, that's bad news. I ordered a pack, too. I guess I will see for myself. In the meantime, however, I picked up some Palm V protectors at Radio Shack ($7, I think) and trimmed one to size. They are larger than the 60CS screen in both height and width and come in a pack of 12, so I just had to sacrifice one. I put it over the screen, then used a Sharpie pen to outline the edges of the screen on the protector. I peeled it off, stuck it on top of a fresh one, and trimmed around the edges. Then I used the "fresh" trimmed screen protector on my 60CS. Works perfectly, and is very clear and easy to see through. Now I'm wishing I hadn't bothered ordering any! Me too. They're on the way. Let me know which is better. Capt.
  10. My 76S has that feature. I've never had a problem. But check to make sure it's on Auto. Is there a menu in that page to get to a setup for the graph? Hope this helps. I'll be getting mine tomorrow.
  11. My 76S does that also. It's a pain. What I do is clean the track up first in Mapsource and transfer it back. Clearing the gps track just before, and after downloading track I shut the track mode off. It keeps making tracks even with setting of gps off. Maybe someone has a better idea.
  12. That's great, thanks. Now I'm even more excited. Mine will be here by Wed. How's the screen show up in the car? Someone said it wasn't that good? Was that you? Maybe with the light on all the time?
  13. From what I've read the corrections (WAAS) take the longest to build the data base needed. Up to 3/4 of an hour depending. Once done it will carry the correction if you lose the sat. for a while. The other calculations need update more frequently and thus can build an data base quicker. I would leave it running for the 3/4 of an hour if you can with the waas locked in. Like I said mine jammed up and had to be reset. Like computers do sometimes. I think for the most part everything works well.
  14. Don't forget to have a clear veiw of the sky when first turning it on and leave it for an hour there to build an good almanac. My 76S got jammed up and I had to do a master reset because I fired it up between some houses, on my street. It wouldn't get the right WAAS sat (35). It found 33 but that one doesn't work here well. No matter how long I set it out with a clear view it wouldn't lock on to 35. Just kept trying to hold 33. After the reset I had a clear view at the beach and it built an good almanac and has worked good ever since. I'm going to call in sick and take a long hike with it for the day. One on one. Capt.
  15. Here is the link : http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&...satellite-navto the fourm. One of the guys claiming problems is a well known gps guy. He's got the site www.gpsinformation.com
  16. Yes that can be true. I tried that once on a electonic device andit broke the spring. Putting in a shim as much as it's a pain in the butt would be the way to go. Maybe some rechareables are full length? If this is true about the 60 series that's too bad. I can't believe they can over look something like that. And they probablely order a million of those springs from someone and will have to install them until they run out.
  17. I don't have mine yet,it's on it's way, but I see on another forum their haveing problems with the 60C holding rechargeable batterys tight in the compartment so they don't power off with movement. They claim the springs are weak and that the rechargeable are a little shorter. That maybe bending out the springs might help.
  18. Mine shipped late yesterday. I have an tracking number with FedEX. Good luck guys
  19. I was told by Gpscity that they had a truck coming in Wed.
  20. I also have the 60CS coming with CitySelect. I have Mapsource Topo, and MetroGuide 4. When I load the CitySelct I assume it will intergrate with the current Mapsource? So when I want CitySelect to show I go to the tool bar window on the left of the zoom in icon, and drop down the list and pick CitySelect ? In that list now is Topo with the different sections of the country,no map, and Metro Guide.
  21. Im sorry, what I mean is that I have saved tracks made with the 76S. Which allow 750 points per saved. The 76S now allows, makes,up to 10 saved tracks with 750 points each. Although I never saw it make one with 750 points despite having active tracks with up to 4,000 points. That info may not be on Garmin's site. They made the upgrade witihin software upgrades. maybe when they went to 10000 points with the active track. The 76S orignially had only 5000 active points, and would make saved tracks of 250 points I believe. The new 76CS looks like it will have the same saved track program as the 60C and CS which allows 20 saved tracks at 500 points each track. The 76S allowed 10 saved tracks at 750 points each. The info at Garmin for the 76CS only says the amount of saved tracks it will hold (20) and not the amount of points for them. So I'm assuming it will be only 500 points per because of the 20 allowed which will be the same as the 60CS. Would Babel take my active tracks and condense them to a Garmin saved type of track in the amount of points I'd like to save in the track? Or do I have to use the gps to do this ? With some of the lesser active tracks I've made, say 1500 points I would have like to have made a saved track of 500 or 750 even. The 76S only made saved tracks of around 300 or so on those. It seems you'd have to have an large active track to get the gps to make a track reaching the limit of points. More points the better detail. That's why I'm concerened. I try to keep as much detail with the tracks. Jim
  22. I checked out their site. I'm a little confused which download to use. What do you think? I have XP. Jim
  23. When I hiked I noticed the odometer was always short of the printed books etc. from various sources milage. But when I loaded into PC,the active track that is, the NGTopo, and Mapsource showed the hike was longer and closer to the claimed milage. I then took and compared it to the trucks odometer on a 35 mile trip and it was the same. Some one told me that hiking slow like I did, stopping and resting, the gps can't compute the odometer that accuate when going 1/2 mile an hour, etc. I read another article within www.gpsinformation.net that said when using NGTopo the track milage can be off as much as 30 % because of the way it computes the track. Anyway with my Garmin 76S, the odometer was off, but when I loaded the active track into topo programs they showed a more accuate milage. Hope this helps.
  24. No 60CS now,I have it on order so I don't know yet because I didn't try. But if I knew the 76CS would still do the job I would hold out til then. GPS Babel sounds good I'll check that it out..
