  1. It depends, what is important to YOU.

If the ability to have maps, download detail maps is important, then the $60.00 more would be worth it. In addition to maps, if being able to hold 1000 waypoints VS only 500, is important, then the $60.00 is worth it. Also The yellow eTrex does not come with the computer cable, and the Legand does. The cable will cost you about $16.00 minimum, so add that into the equation.

Can your wallet handle it, and are these things important to you? Answer those questions to yourself, and you should have your answer.

  2. BTW did you like the virts better, less, or the same as a traditional cache?

 If this wasn't the getting started forum I'd tell on you for blatant drifting.

    Watch out H-TeamFour, It’s a loaded question!

Do not, I repeat, do not answer that question. It would be better to tell everyone why Ford or Chevy is better than the other, or why Bud or Miller is better than the other.

  3. I am an engineering teacher at a Southern California high school, and my advanced engineers are working to solve a GPS problem.

If you can spare a couple of minutes, my class would like you to answer the questions below and send them to mmartin@king.rusd.k12.ca.us

    1. When you hike with GPS, do you carry it around your neck, on your belt, in your hand, or none of the above? (if none of the above, please explain)

    2. As per your above response, is it inconvenient or uncomfortable carrying your GPS that way?

    3. Do you ever lose signal on your GPS while carrying it in the above manner?

    4. Do you enter waypoints into your GPS while you hike?

    5. Is it inconvenient to enter waypoints while carrying your GPS in the manner described above?

Thanks for your help, and if you'll keep in touch, we'll let you know what we've come up with.

    e-mail on it's way

  4. Thanks for all the help guys. I am sure I am going to be a pain for the salesman at REI tomorrow because I have never been backpacking before. It looks like I am going to have to drop about 400 bucks for a backpack, 2 person tent, stove, shoes, water resevoir, etc., so he might be glad, depending on if they get commission.

Check your local REI for rental gear. This is a great way to see what kind of pack you will enjoy. most REI's rent packs and tents, so look into it.

  5. Maybe this group can help you better. There are also Hiking Clubs in Chattanooga, if that is closer. A trip down to Atlanta, and a visit to one of the REI's could also prove wise.

I have had great luck with stuff from both LL Bean and REI, but do your self a favor and buy you pack in person at a good outdoorsman store.

  6. Just thought some of you folks might find this interesting...

I (personally) see some value in this product, generally speaking, so I enquired about the availability of a unit for the GPSMap 76C(S) and this is what I received from Jonathan Reni at Enoch Corporation:

"We will definately expand to other models as soon as our current model takes off.

We're currently redesigning the back to make it compatible with all Garmin Accessories. The new design for the eTrex charger back and also our eTrex C Charger backs should be available by mid-October. If the response is as we anticipate, we should have a product ready for the GPS Map 76C series

by the end of November. --We also plan to have Solar accessories available by January."

    -Mike

Sounds about right. Jonathan, and his crew, are really on top of things.

    To Mopar,

Thanks for the strong input about "compatibility". See what happened B)

  7. I got my Sportrak pro around 1/1/2004. I saw that some people were having trouble with cracks around the 6 screws. I watched mine for the problem for a while and never noticed it. On Saturday I went riding on my ATV, I have a holder for my GPS on it, and got pretty muddy and dusty. When I got home I rinsed the dirt off from the unit and put in on my desk. The next day I was going hunting and when I tried to turn my unit on all I got was some lines. B) On further exam I found that I had not only cracks but 2 of the screw holes were completely broken leaving it possible for water to get in. I called Magellan and they gave me an RMA number and told me to send it in. They also told me that the cracking problem was on the older units and they have fixed the problem. My question is, have they fixed it or am I going to have the same trouble down the road? B)

    Thanks

I am not aware of any "fix", just a "repair". If you still have the unit, remove the battery compartment and check the date code (D/C), and check it against the date codes in this thread. It will look some thing like, “3503” this is the 35th week of 2003

Do not let them BS you around.

  8. Sounds like a stroll in the park, and it looks like you have enough gear.  And don't forget to put some shoes on.

Additionally, I'd recommend socks, pants and a shirt.

Seriously, carry enough water. I was suprised to find out how much water I used on a trail - over 3 liters for me (I had a camelbak water bladder). I am planning on buying a water filtration system too, though they are kinda expensive.

Pick up some Smartwool or similar style socks. They wick away the sweat well and leave your feet cool and dry. Very nice.

and take an extra pair with you. (of socks that id)

  9. Thanks for bringing this back to the top. I must admit that I have not had much time to work with this device yet. I recently found myself looking for an employment opportunity, and this has derailed many projects.

I can report that the “advertised” charging abilities have been accurate and a benefit. Being able to charge the batteries in the unit and use it at the same time while in the car has been great.

The “waterproof test” has not been performed yet. On my list of things to do this week, is, “contact the manufacturer and ask if they claim it keeps its original factory waterproof rating”? If the manufacturer does not claim that it does, I am not wasting my time dunking it to find out, then have to replace the GPSr. LOL

  10. I think an idea like this would be well served as a cache attribute. Adding cache attributes (like wheelchair accessible) is something that is at the top of my list.

When do you sleep? Thanks for your work.

  11. <snip>

We call this phenomenon "chasing the arrow" and it is quite common. Once you learn to just let the GPS guide you into the general area, and then IGNORE it while you ask yourself, "where would I hide something?", you will do just fine.

    Things like

fallen tree limbs that just happend to fall in a nice neat pile.

a large pine cone and the only trees around are Oak

These are examples of things that geocachers learn to notice, but "most" of the casual passer by will not even notice.

  12. Doing a Google search I see where you can get the antenna balls for around .68 each with an order of 200 or more. Sell them for 1.50 and your profitable.

    El Diablo

El D. is that any shape, or just your company logo on a round ball? That would be cool though, while waiting for the molded "signal the frog" version, to have the geocahing.com logo on a round ball.

    edited to stay on topic:

The new flashlights are very cool looking. We will probably get some after the 15th.

  13. Thanks for the replies. I just ordered 2 EMap mounts from GPS City so hopefully they will go out today and I should have them early next week. I tried to find them locally but they were priced $15-20 and I would rather wait a couple of days and save a bit of money.

Cherokeecacher - I have not been to Houston in awhile. Last time I was there I was just passing thru on my way to Florida for a funeral. Used to go every summer to Six Flags but with Fiesta Texas and Sea World so close it is hard to justify the trip.

Oh well. When hockey season starts, we will be traveling to San Antonio for games and caching, duh. LOL.

How much did ya find them for on-line. I was looking lastnight and could not find anything under $13.00+shipping

  14. Trying desparately to keep it Geocaching related

I can see the virtual cache submissions hitting the fan:

This virtual will take you to the location where some solar radiated atoms hit the ground on September 8, 2004.  To log the find, collect some of the atoms and bring them to NASA.

    ROFLMAO

I think it would have the "wow" that they are looking for. We would make the trip to check it out. ;)

  15. ;) New to sport - have a little eTrex yellow but it has got me to 3 finds so far. I guess i must agree that any GPS that gets you there is fine.

this is SOOOOO true. I am from the "Magellan camp", but just bought an eTrex "yellow", at an incredable price, to have as a backup. I cached with it this past Saturday and it did the job just fine. Now we, Cherokeecacher, own 1 Legand, 1 Yellow eTrex, and My Meridian Gold. Yup, I definatly live in a house devided.

If it gets you to a cache, it works just fine. :D

  16. The Sandisk problem you ask about is covered in the Magellan FAQ. I cannot specifically remember what firmware # the yellow needs to be upgraded to, or if it even can be, for the larger Sandisck SD cards to work.

Join this yahoo group, it is free, then click on the “files” link on the left hand side, the click on the link for “FAQ”, the select “Magellan Meridian FAQ, version 2.0”

This document may even answer, or address, other issues you have not yet experienced. This is much better information than anything Magellan has released, including the owners manuals. Have fun learning cool things about your Maggie.

  17. The only issue with the Sport Tracks that is universal is the case can crack where it's screwed together.  Watch for that.  It's covered under warrantee.

You are the second person to raise that concern. I will watch for that ! Right now though I am babying my new toy so bad it couldn't crack in a hurricane. ;)

You are too funny :D and have a great attitude  Welcome to the sport.

  18. <snip>

As for the ST crack issue; the cracks are on the outside and do not intrude past the rubber seal, so are cosmetic at worst, not affecting the water-tightness.  My ST Pro has a couple that are barely visible if you look extremely close (never even noticed them untill reading about it here), but I backed the screws off 1/8 turn, and they have never gotten any worse.  To me anyway, they are a non-issue, considering how well the unit works.

Not completely true, although there have been few reports of water damage as a result of the stress cracks, it has been reported as in this thread
