  1. GREAT JOB! Thank you for the hard work. collateral like this is an awesome resource for everyone, especially when a reporter wants to do a story on Geocaching. How hard would it be to add a "printer freindly" link on the stories? Is it worth considering? great job, thanks again.
  2. I would take a copy of Cybret’s brochure for sure and also give the web addy for the new "Today's Cacher" online magazine
  3. Due to legal reasons, you will have a hard time finding a base map backup file on the net. I am sure they are out there, but hard to find. Have you tried e-mailing your predicament to the Yahoo meridian user group? ?
  4. Have you done a search for that area here? It does not look like the traditional discs that I have seen, but why else would there be a concrete pillar in the woods?
  5. First I will say that if this is one of those topics that has been “beaten to death”, I apologize. I did a search for “GPS or Geocaching” and “which came first” and nothing came up. For absolutely no reason what so ever, I am curious which one lead to the other for you. Did you own a GPS first for other uses, and then found out about Geocaching? Or, did Geocaching lead you to purchase your first GPS? Second (if applicable) how quickly did you out grow/get board with your first unit, and upgrade to one with more “bells and whistles”, and are they worth it, or just fun to have? I will admit, that Geocaching and Mountain Biking were my motivators, but like most of my other “gadgets”, now that I have one I have found other uses for it and wonder “how did I get this far in life with out one” . I have not outgrown my GPS yet, and it will probably be a few years before I do. Unless I wake up one morning and decide there is just no way I can live another day without a color screen. Which could happen and I could get a doctors note for the family CFO
  6. As already stated, GSAK should do this. This is a great program and Clyde, the programer, is great about answering questions. You can read more about the program in this thread.
  7. I am not sure about looking it up this way on GC.com; I do not think you can. Try posting this in your regional area, and you might find someone that has put a web site together for your state. you can look here and here to see what a kind person put together for Texas.
  8. This is some of the best info I have gotten here. Thanks! This will come in handy for those spur-o-the moment cache urges. I always have my phone with me, and my GPSr is almost always with me. This is too cool
  9. I am only on Module one, but plan on completing IS –317 this month. Then it is time to locate local group to complete the rest of the classroom/field training. About how long has it taken others to complete the training?
  10. Just like GEO*Trailblazer 1 suggested, ask them if the park system operates under United States Department of the Interior Bureau of land Management. If they answer “yes” educate them on Instruction Memorandum No. 2003-182. You will not be able to go much higher up the “chain of command” than Bud Cribley, Acting Assistant Director – Renewable Resources and Planning. IF they fall under this department, sounds like this should be the end of the discussion. Click on Geo*Trailblazer 1's link, and you can read the full memo.
  11. All quotes are from Keystone Approver Posted: Feb 17 2004, 02:26 PM It would not surprise me at all. From what I hear, all the volunteers do what they can with the resources available to them. I am only suggesting that it, or something like it, become common practice. Check and balance kind of thing, ya know. OK, I will bite on this bait. Here is the “auto pilot version” have the web dev. Gurus set it up so that a similar message automatically is sent to everyone that submits a request for approval through gc.com. Instead of asking for a reply just reiterate the requirement for all 1 star ratings to be accessible by a person in a wheelchair. You are correct, nothing is perfect, and you/we/I will never please everyone all the time, but sometimes improvements can be made to head in that direction. You, nor any approver, is placed in a position of determining weather a cache is wheelchair accessible or not. The e-mail places that burden on the person seeking approval. That is why it is worded the way it is. Clear, concise, and to the point, no room for misinterpretation.
  12. Verry good question, and ya beat me to it. WHY in the world did they move it to "geocaching.com website" forum. Now lets think about this from a marketing point of view. If you are new to this site, out of all the forum headers, which ones are you most likely to read first? Not in this order, but I bet the three most "looked at" areas are "getting started", "geocaching topics", and "GPS units and software". You know what they say about opinions…everyone has one, this is just mine Sorry for getting off topic.
  13. Agreed. My point is that this is something we as cache owners should be dealing with. not asking our listing service to handle. Would you have the same stance if this was about requiring terrain "5" for mountain-climbing and scuba-diving? Geocaching.com, as a listing service, should be concerned about the integrity if its listings. Therefore, they should require caches be rated appropriately. If a cache says "A nice place to walk your dog or ride your mountain bike." or "Find the fence, find the section cornor and look down the arroyo." should that be allowed to be rated a "1" for terrain? For the mountian bike, it must not be paved or they would have just said bicycle. For the arroyo, well arroyos are very sandy, not a good place for a handicapped person. (BTW, the mountain bike one is also in an arroyo) Would you rather I email you a list of caches with inappropriate ratings or would you like it built into the approval process instead? There really aren't that many "1" caches, but it would be nice for people that "need" to do that kind to set their PQ's up and not have to discount 90% of them. sax, we are agreeing in everything but who should be responsible for the rating. As an approver I have to go by what the cache owner tells me in the notes and description. a mandatory rating system is only as good as the information supplied. So it still falls to the owner to tell me as the approver and everyone as the finders what the cache rating is. I do not see a way to remove the owner from this equation. Therefore unless we as cache owners step up to the plate and properly rate our caches no listing service, no matter how strict the rules, can control what we say about it. It is the owners and finders responsibility not that of the listing service. It really is this simple, if anyone “truly” wants to do it. A volunteer approver must approve all caches anyway. If an approver receives a request for a new cache with a 1 star rating, a very quick simple e-mail should go out to the ‘hopeful owner”. “Thank you for submitting you request for your cache to be reviewed and approved to be added to the geocaching.com web listing. I noticed that you have rated it a 1 star for terrain. All I really need to know is, can someone in a wheelchair easily get to this location? Thanks for taking the time to place this cache and I look forward to receiving your reply soon, Geocaching.com Cache Approver” Just an opinion, everyone has one
  14. Congratulations, and welcome to the sport/addiction. I will warn you now; you will probably get some posts about “why did you get that instead of ?????” Here you are all excited about your new toy and the excitement you will have using it, and someone wants to burst your bubble. The yellow SporTrack will due just fine for geocaching. The only reason you “might” need the PC cable is for downloading waypoints to the unit instead of entering them using the buttons on the unit. You can also download extra Points of Interest (POI’s) if you also purchase the DataSend software. Welcome aboard and have fun.
  15. Check this price out You will have to add the item to your cart to see the price for yourself, but Meridian Gold for only $209.00. Way more memory, expandable, great reception, and large screen.. With a 16mb base map and expandable memory using SD cards for down loading detailed maps, I think your friend will enjoy being able to load all the maps needed for a trip at home, ahead of time, and then while on the trip he/she can swap the detailed maps “on the fly”, no need to stop what you are doing to completely down load a new region. Just an opinion, everyone has one edited for spelling
  16. Speaking only as someone that works with statistics, ratings, and other research/polling data, this does not necessarily mean they are better. I am not saying that one is better than the other here; I am just saying that just because Chevy out-sells Lexus, it is not a true indicator of which is better. The funny thing about numbers, stats, ratings, …. are, you can manipulate them to support just about any angle.
  17. They have one, just does not sound like a good one. I have not personally seen it, but some folks in different user groups have mentioned it. The prices I have heard about only seem to be $20 - $50 dollars less than a new retail unit. (The ones I have heard about from Thales are refurbished) But like I said, I have only heard about the program existing, and have had no first hand experience with it.
  18. You are not alone. You think it is bad now, Waite until you get the e-mail from Thales saying your RA has been shipped, and you get to track it on it’s way back to you. That is when you truly get anxious. 19. Voltaire, I was thinking that if you know a date you will be passing through the Houston, Texas area, we could have an event cache in your honor, and have a TB trade to help get some of these guys and gals on their way again. What do you think? Just an idea, I did not say it was a good one
  20. You have probably considered this, but… Since you are still in your 30 day return period, I would exchange the SporTrak Pro for the Meridian Gold. The Gold uses similar screen set up, relatively the same base map at 16 MB, and you can use any SD card for downloading detailed maps for use on the road/trails. All this and you save $25.00 on a unit you are less likely to out-grow any time soon, unless you get the feeling you MUST have a color screen. I was still in my 30 period when I noticed the cracks in my STP Marine, and exchanged it for the Gold and love it. Just an option everyone has one
  21. In Texas, anyway, there is a vehicle lemon law that protects consumers from “nonfixable" (I think I just created a new word) mechanical problems. I do not remember all the details but it works something like this. After taking your vehicle for service, on the same item, for X number of times. The manufacturer is obligated to purchase the vehicle back at the same price you paid, or market value. Which ever is highest. That is the jest of it. The specifics are probably way off, but the concept is correct. I am sure there is someone out there that will feel the uncontrollable need to correct me
  22. Just a silly thought, I think we know the answer. But after the third time, does the lemon law apply to consumer electronics? No need to reply to this question, it is a joke.
  23. I think Roswell.fr was asking if your warranty now is one year from Feb. 2004, or does it only have what is remaining on the warranty from original date of purchase. My GUESS is it has what ever is remaining from original date of purchase, but a new warranty period would be nice. Especially for those people who are near then end of theirs, get it fixed, then it happens again.
  24. O si yo brother, welcome to the sport/addiction/game If you ever make it to Tahlequah, Check out these virtual caches by Geo Sooner Sequoyah's Cabin Old Cherokee Female Seminary Cherokee History Wa do
