  1. I suppose it's also possible that they just found something else to do... While I was certainly hooked after just a few caches (several of which would be considered "lame" by most), I've talked to plenty of cachers that just are not addicted. Doubt that's really the fault of the caches.
  2. Well, I was going to weigh in on this too, but I think Marky made my point. So much talk about what people don't like... jeez, just ignore the ones that don't meet your tastes and have fun! It's just a game...
  3. That's mine, and it's not. It's a decon container, and that seems to throw off newbies for some reason. When I checked it recently it was in the wrong spot so I moved it back, which may help... Thanks for making it to the meeting! The fact that they remembered you and even tried caching shows this is a worthwhile effort. I will be there for the next one! On a related note: I met with some folks from REI Tuesday who are making inroads on our behalf to get Geocaching approved for EBRP REI is starting a pilot program in the Bay Area this June that will include teaching Geocaching and taking folks on outings into local parks. So they have been in communication with EBRP to help deal with their issues. They understand what we are about and have a good reputation with the parks folks so they add some credibility for us!
  4. Note that some of the people - like me - that had previously expressed interest in this coin are now part of the group that Nurse Dave mentioned. I'm also part of Nurse Dave's coin group. Please adjust your list accordingly. Thanks! I am part of this list as well so please adjust your totals by four. I will be receiving the coins via the list that Nursedave will be placing with you. Damenace We're part of Nurse Dave's coin group too. So our 3 will come through that order. Me too (see how many of us will quote the same post...)
  5. I'll let you come over and look at mine until yours arrive. They're very nice
  6. No Dave, I think they were really addressed to me, since I didn't get mine either.
  7. There are no physical caches in the Pinnacles since it's a National Park, but it would be a great spot for an Earthcache! Do a little homework before you go on the local geology and you could set up a nice one!
  8. OT but I may pull a cache out of this somehow... If you are a cacher (over 45 probably) and remember the "Eye See the Light" laser light show at De Anza/Minolta Planetarium in the 70's, contact me offline. I'm trying to work up the playlist and I'm missing a couple of songs...
  9. So many of the geocoins look cluttered. This one is really classy. The GX logo or some other public domain design on the back would tie it into caching just fine. Good work! I look forward to adding it to the collection!
  10. Very good points and ideas. I think a website, maybe with forums, might be a good idea. Also -- have we considered having the local group be called something besides BADGES? Wasn't BADGES started as a dining/get-together organization? Maybe there could be an affiliated group (Silicon Valley Geocachers, for instance? or Bay Area Geocachers?) that deals with other stuff? Just throwing out ideas. Let me know if I can help. I can do some web design as well. I think the website should be BAGS (Bay Area Geocaching Society), and have an emphisis on CITO. The bags fits in well with CITO, and we could even have our own CITO BAGS. --Marky So where would we set the age limit before you become an "old BAG"?
  11. Drop a line to Nurse Dave, he has had quite a bit of experience on this.
  12. On the subject of a local organization, I posed the question because I have mixed feelings as well. I am not fond of bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake... I'd rather be out caching! But I do see a couple of needs here that an organization might help fill. We need to continue PR work with local parks and such. They respect organizations with large memberships. We need to help newbies find their way around. We have lots of resources scattered about, a website and local organization can do a lot to help centralize info and get it to the right people. A local website is a good place for out-of-town cachers to go to get the oriented. We need a local calendar. I DON'T think we need to do what a lot of the regional organizations do and duplicate much of this website. A local forum might be good, but no-one uses the one that is there now (yahoo) so I'm not sure if it would work. I don't want to see something evolve with endless meetings and commitees, and no budgets and dues, but maybe there is something in between.
  13. Because the cachers here are actually out caching as opposed to sitting at their computers building web sites You know, I think there is a lot of truth to that! Must be those cold winters....
  14. I have been asked to sell extra coins in my collection rather than trade, but that feels kind of like being a "retail distributor". I'd much rather use them to trade for something else I can't buy, like other cool sig items (doesn't have to be a coin).
  15. I've been looking around at other groups websites since BADGES is working on getting one set up. I also sent a question around to the BADGES team basically along the lines of "who are we", and I thought I would open that question up to everyone else. There are several organized caching groups in the state. The Bay Area has BADGES, planning dinners right now, but nothing else. We at BADGES ARE contacted by outsiders as the representatives for the area though. We have a yahoo group or two, but my local Yahoo group gets very little use (seems we get all our conversational needs filled here maybe). Do we NEED something more? I think a place with a comprehensive calendar would be good, and I'm sure the BADGES site can do that. What about other resources? Should newbies have a central spot to get info/FAQs/downloads? What about our PR efforts to the parks? Do we need an organization to be taken more seriously? Is BADGES it? If yes, do we need to change its structure? I have already been asked how big our membership is, and truth is- we have no membership. I'm pretty sure we DON'T need complexity or politics... Thoughts?
  16. yeh, looks like I can put this one in the budget for 2006...
  17. Well, in the hopes there is another KOIC coin floating about out there... I am looking for: KOIC Waypoint15 Indy Diver DHobby1 Team FISUR Texas 2003 with round logo on back (I'm guessing most of us could just cut and paste that same list eh?) Geonap (should be a bit easier to find) I can offer in trade some combination of: My wands (custom made, your choice of woods) My sig tokens (which are about gone) ...and/or: Washington, Oregon, California, West Tennessee, North Carolina, CKayaks, Idaho, Kentucky, Missouri, Texas 2003, Texas 2005.
  18. I've made dozens of trades online and have yet to have a problem. Some people are slower that others, but everyone has come through. In fact, I have had people turn around and send extra items after the fact just to "even up the trade" (and I have done the same). It's a good group out there...
  19. I tried to log a TB into it (sent via space probe), but it wouldn't take it Nice cache though! Probably ought to get its own icon...
  20. Sculpy and FIMO are polymer clays, actually PVC, same stuff as sprinkler pipes. So they will handle heat in an ammo box quite well. Most plastics will soften a little in heat though, and they could warp or deform slightly.
  21. Interesting..... I may try to do it if there are no other volunteers. I just hope they haven't made the earthcache procedures more strict yet, like they said they would. Still easy: http://www.earthcache.org/
  22. Interesting subject for an earthcache around here: http://www.es.ucsc.edu/~es10/fieldtripNBridge/ And a resource that should provide material for MANY caches: http://www.ucpress.edu/books/pages/9237.html ...feel free to create an earthcache.... not that I'm waiting or anything...
