  1. I've been reading this forum with interest for about a month, and just found my first cache a few days ago, so I decided to wade in and get to know you folks. I go caching with my kids, and they love it. They take turns zeroing in on the target. I've been a frequent participant in other forums (woodworking, Sony Clie Users, Reef Aquariums, rocketry...) and it seems they all have their share of trolls, but they are easy to ignore and it's great to meet all these other great people!
  2. You can get the cable at http://www.thesupplynet.com
  3. I'm using CacheMate as well in my Clie, and I also use a program called Vikao for Palm 1.2. This allows me to easily copy anything from a web page and drop it into the Clie (fewer steps than Plucker... just copy the text you want and click a desktop icon to store it for your next sync).
  4. I'm using an older Clie NR70, with CacheMate, and I've been going online out on the trail with a cable into my Motorola (Verizon) phone. I imagine there is a newer unit out there that might combine a few of these together, but it all works.
  5. I have the eTrex Venture and have been searching in areas with tall trees and/or buildings, and it's been working fine. I just have to get a bearing while away from the trees, or let it stand still for a minute sometimes. My kids get excited when it starts flipping direction back and forth because they know we are near the treasure!
  6. If you run into any more problems, drop me a line... we're running similar systems. I'm using a Clie NR70 (Palm OS 4.1), Cachemate, eTrex Venture and my XP PC. So far everything is working (which is a suprise), and I can concentrate my newbie frustrations on some troublesome microcaches I can't find.
  7. I received an eTrex Venture for Christmas and it's been working fine. After about a week of entering waypoints by hand I unpacked the serial cable and hooked it up to my PC and now I'm downloading from this site much faster. Download a copy of EasyGPS (freeware) and you're in business! I can see where some of the features on the higher end units would be useful, and I'll probably trade up in a year, but I like to feed my addictions slowly... Anyway, I've run into geocachers who started with nothing at all, and some who spent big $$, and they all seem to work... the hunt is the thing
