  1. Thanks for the great info.....the link explains it well, i think. I bit more complex than I expected, I think I need to upgrade my internal processor. lol Thanks for the reply.
  2. obviously I'm new to benchmarks.......so I was hoping someone here can help me out. When location BM's with reference marks, the data sheets give a distance and then a heading that I don't understand. How can I translate dddmmss into a compass heading? is it even possible? Example: EV3133|---------------------------------------------------------------------| EV3133| PID Reference Object Distance Geod. Az | EV3133| dddmmss.s | EV3133| EV3087 MILPAS APPROX. 2.1 KM 0723252.7 | EV3133| TUNA RM 1 15.254 METERS 19239 | EV3133| TUNA RM 2 17.039 METERS 27313 | EV3133|---------------------------------------------------------------------| EV3133 I understand that RM's are listed clockwise from north, and in the past I have just walked out the distance listed and started walking in a clockwise circle from north until I found the RM1, then repeated the process from there to locate RM2. But I've got to think there is an easier way. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks - ffjerm
  3. Thanks.....so by theory, there is one of these every 1 mile running due east/west and due northsouth? Also, were did you find the data sheet you attached? Thanks for he great info!
  4. Ok....here it is. I'm not sure how well the pic will upload, so I'll give a verbal description as well. Outer edge of disk is stamped 'U.S. GENERAL LAND OFFICE SURVEY - 1942' I believe the ID # is T4NR3W then the center is stamped: S20 | S21 S29 | S28 N34' 24.810' W117' 12.439 Elevation of 3074 anyway, hopefully this info will help. This mark is obviously a corner marker of some sorts. It would be fun to locate some more of these. If anyone here can lead me to more resources, I would appreciate it. Thanks again - ffjerm
  5. OK, I know I'm not supposed to add pics of the 'view', but after hiking up here only to find the mark destroyed, the view is all got! Looking easterly towards Mt baldy, with I-15 in the foreground. See my turck?......it's parked on the bridge. Oh yeah.....this is EV3703
  6. EV3727 You're looking south with Mt. Baldy in the background. BM is set in top of the post, with my GPS sitting on top.
  7. Thanks for the info. I'll take some pics and post tomorrow, with lat and long as well.
  8. I was attemping to locate an USGS benchmark near my home here in So. California when I stumbled across a benchmark labeled as 'US General Land Use Survey'. Has anyone here heard of these and/or is there a resource where I can find more info on these benchmarks. Thanks - ffjerm
  9. thanks Terra, Black Dog and Colorado for the advise. I didn't realize i could get the additional info from NGS. I'll will surely use this in the future. You were correct, for I was looking for COSY. I'm pretty sure I searched the right area well. I may try to return for a second look. Thanks again - Jeremy
  10. Was hunting for a benchmark today and ran into a snag. I was hoping someone could clarify something for me. I found both of the reference marks, but could not locate the mark itself. I searched a large area surrounding the reference marks, but no luck. The notes weren't much help because they didn't list the direction from which the reference marks were in relation to the benchmark. As I understood it, the arrows on the reference marks point to the benchmark. Is this true? If so, it would make the search area much smaller. Any assistance and/or past experiences would be appreciated. Thanks - Jeremy
