  1. I just contacted Magellan via telephone and received my RMA#. I’ll be mailing it out tomorrow. I was also told that Magellan would match the shipping method used. So If I send it UPS Ground, it will come back UPS ground etc. I plan on sending it Fed-Ex… I’d hate to be with out it for long. Considering I’m having to come out of pocket to mail it in, I hope I’ll receive some of the goodies everyone has been talking about. I bought into Magellan for the GPS (SporTrak Map), Mapsend Topo software and the small belt case. (No going back now) I’ll be sticking with Magellan…Hopefully everything will go smoothly . . .I’ll keep you all posted…

  3. I just submitted a request for repair. “Cracks forming along the screws of my GPS case. Very disappointing considering I just got it. For more information please visit these links… http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=62683 http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=64158 http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=63586 “ Hopefully I’ll hear from them soon…
  4. Well change my vote as well. It appears that backing the screws off will not help prevent the cracks from forming (wishful thinking I guess). It appears the screw itself is to blame. The screw’s diameter is too large for the case housing. I have since developed a second bulge in the receiver’s case. This bulge does not appear to run completely though the case when observed under 15X magnification, but I believe its just a matter of time before it develops into a full fledge crack. This is of course VERY disappointing considering I’ve only had the unit for a month and a half. Unit was purchased on 12/27/03 and has a DC# of 3302. I think I’ll just live with the cracks (for now) and steer others away from purchasing this GPSr. Near the end of the one-year warranty, I’ll contact Magellan and submit it for repair.
  5. Is your scratch on the back half of the case (directly under the bolt head), or on the front half of the case (the part the bolt threads into)? The one on the back cover (although it is most obvious in the photo) is unusual. The common crack is a line on the front cover in line with the screw, often accompanied by a slight bulge. In the photo it is a faint white line which is less pronounced than the line under the bolt head. If you wanted to examine it you would not be able to see more of it by taking out the screw without also separating the two halves of the case and removing the rubber gasket. In many cases the crack is so developed that this is unecessary. Your case may indeed be fine. I just wanted to be sure people are looking in the most likely place. Either way, don't forget to include a date code. Thanks! No it's on the front half or external side. After removing the screw, I can see that the scratch is external only and does not run through the case loop. As for the D/C number it's with my first post.
  6. I have a similar scratch on my gps unit (SporTrak Map). But after removing the screw, I can clearly see that it is not a crack, just a scratch. You might want to remove the screw from the case and recheck your gps. It might not be cracked. But then again I may have caught mine in time. I backed the screws out once I caught wind of this. It's a great unit for GPSing; but now I can't in good faith recommend this unit to others because of this problem. Magellan really needs to get a handle on this.
  7. What version of Mapsend Topo are you using? And what area of the country are you in? I’m using ver 4.2 and I have no complainants. Topo was comparable to a military map. I’m on the East Coast. The gentlemen who just posted stated that there were noticeable discrepancies on the west coast.
  8. SporTrak Map - Dec 27 2003 D/C#3302 One noticeable pressure bulge has developed, and one hair line scratch along screw line. No full-fledged cracks yet. All screws have been backed out and slightly tighten, in order to prevent cracks from developing. I hope I caught it in time.
  9. I have Mapsend Topo and a SporTrak Map unit. The detail for my area is great. I even compared the mapping detail against a military map. It was very accurate. It did not however show military restricted areas, like airfields or small base camp training areas. But it did show the roads which, ran though, or around these areas, which was very cool. So in answer to question one, Yes you can achieve very good detail with Mapsend Topo & your SporTrak Map GPSr. In answer to question two, the detail will be added to your base map, they work together. You have a setting on the SporTrak Map for activating a downloaded region. This download region will show greater detail than your base map. When you zoom in the detail is visible, but only for the region(s) you downloaded. I hope this helps. Finler.
  10. So far so good. Wheresmyrebate.com is showing an approved status. Rebate amount $50.00 - which is correct (SporTrak Map & Mapsend Topo). I'll just have to wait and see what happens next.
  11. I purchased a Magellan SporTrak Map on DEC 28th 2003 so far so good. I checked my unit and no cracks. I did however notice what maybe a forming weak spot near one of the screws (Small line / ripple). I took the advice of the forum and backed the screws off a touch. I hope this will prevent the cracks from forming. Thanks for the heads up. You guys may have saved me from a bunch of heart ache.
  12. I just got MapSend Topo from Radio Shack and it was maked on the box. Ver 4.2
  13. Just wanted to say thanks for the information. My SporTrak Map is now personalized. But went with ver. 4.04
  14. Go for the Magellan SporTrak Map. Its a great unit and it has a $30 Dollar rebate if you buy before 2 Feb 04. I've got one and I'm very happy with it.
  15. I got mine from Radio Shack and sent it in. I don’t think they care where you got the unit from, so long as you send in the cut UPC code from the box. It’s a way of insuring you don’t return the unit to the store.
  16. I purchased a Magellan SporTrak Map for $169.97 at Radio Shack. Right now it has a $30 Dollar mail in rebate which drops the total to 139.97. If you purchase any MapSend software with it, you’ll get an additional 20 bucks rebate for a total of fifty dollars. It’s a great unit with lots of bells and whistles. Plenty of memory for down loading maps. You wont be able to down load the entire United States, but more then likely you’ll be able to down load what you need with plenty of room to spare. I’ve down loaded a large section near my home, which includes 3 large cities, airports, roads etc. It was only 399 kilobytes. I still have over 5 Megs of room left on the unit. I’m really happy with it thus far and I've found every cache I’ve gone for. Still a newb, but I'm having a great time geocaching.

  18. It must have been a fluk... Seems to be working indoors again. Coffee table is right where I left it....
  19. I just bought Mapsend Topo for my Magellan SporTrak Map unit. It came with a firmware update CD. I went from ver. 3.03 to ver. 4.04 and noticed that the receiver appears less sensitive now. Before upgrading I was able to use the receiver indoors. Now I have to exit my residence in order to get a fix on my position. In addition the elevation appears to be off. I hope this wasn’t a bad move on my part. Has anyone else experienced this problem? And is ver. 3.03 still available? You don’t suppose someone would intentionally cause our receivers to be less sensitive do you? Or maybe just less actuate in certain areas? (The truth is out there.) Am I just being paranoid? Or is SA back?!?!?!? I can’t locate my coffee table!
  20. Do you know where I can find 4.06? Thanks....
  21. The compass in the SportTrak Map is NOT a magnetic compass. It only works when you move. GPSr dead, compass dead........ Your right about that. But you can change the settings to read (True North, Grid North or Magnetic North).... Sorry if I was miss leading you, I'm new to the sport. Didn't realize you wanted a real magnetic compass.
  22. I recently picked up a SporTrak Map gps. It was pre loaded with ver 3.03. I haven't had any problems at all. I downloaded the 5.0 upgrade but I think I'm going to stay away from it. Sounds like nothing but problems. On the other hand, 4.06 sounds like a winner. Should I go for it as an upgrade?
  23. I'm using a Magellan Sportrak Map GPS and it has a compass... Ya might want to take a look at it...I would think the Pro has one too. Take a look at the PDF manual. Good luck picking a GPS. Also I got it on sale at Radio Shack... 169.97 with 30 dollar mail in rebate... So total out of pocket 139.97.
