  1. Let's just go with what you are doing is perfectly fine. Have fun and keep on caching!
  2. thanks for the advice. unfortunately even though they say winter friendly i am still taking allot of dnfs my numbers this month suck. and i have a goal of reaching 1,000 catches buy December 31st and with these numbers it will not happen :( I can only suggest you slow down and worry less about your numbers. I joined the game on 12/26/2003 and still enjoy it tremendously. We just got to 3,400 finds while we were visiting our daughter in Nashville over the Christmas holiday and we celebrated out 10th year of caching.
  3. Most of the time when I revisit a cache location it is because my previous log was a DNF, so I am happy if I can post a Found It!
  4. I recently had to delete a problem found it log and a note because the cacher made a boo boo using an IPhone and could not figure out how to fix the error. I tried to help but the request from the cacher was for me to delete the logs because the cacher couldn't figure out how to do it.
  5. Sadly it appears there may be a problem here as I read the cache logs. Cache owner should be super vigilant to address new cache issues and challenges!
  6. Wife Jane gave me a Sportrak for Christmas 2003 and the next day our family went out and found some caches. I do the vast majority of our caching. Less than 60 days to our 10 year anniversary! We still get out there and I still love the game. Hope to make it to 3,400 finds before the end of the year. Would love to get to 3,650 to get our average back up above one per day but that isn't likely to happen.
  7. Epitome of hyperbole. I developed a web site about 6 years ago for as part of a contract we've had with the USDA for the past 15 years or so. It's hosted where I work and gets a feed of reports (hundreds per day) from several USDA agencies. This morning all usda.gov web sites were shut down, thus the data that feeds my site was cut off and I've had to update our site with a message indicating that it's not getting any new reports. More than that, since I've been involved with this contract for the past 15 years I have a lot of colleagues and friends at the USDA and National Agriculture Library that are now furloughed. Government workers are not just people that are in politics or in the national park service. I don't know if any of the government workers that I know are geocachers, but although they now have more free time to do it, I doubt that geocaching is at the front of their thoughts right now. My question is why were the websites shut down? I seriously doubt they were funded on a day to day basis. Let them be static. Somebody got paid to shut them down. Must have been essential personnel.
  8. Well I have been a geocacher since December 26 of 2003 which means I am approaching ten years of being an active geocacher. But I guess that isn't the streak that is important in this thread. I know quite a few geocachers with longer streaks of being geocachers than mine. I also know quite a few who have shorter streaks. We are all geocachers and we have fun. Some of us even enjoy keeping track of various and assorted manufactured "streaks" but that isn't something I am inclined to do.
  9. My apologies to toz and to the others in this thread for taking my comment too far.
  10. You have to remember that in the area where Riffster is a law enforcement officer that the angry individual could use deadly force on a cacher who is threatening his guard rail and say he was "standing his ground" and not be guilty of any crime. I am disappointed in you toz. You usually have well reasoned arguments and discussion points. This statement of yours is simply uncalled for and a pile of carp.
  11. My PQs aren't usually very big so I always uncheck the box to compress the files. 500 caches will load to my phone in a few seconds. While I still have my trusty GPS Map 76cs I do almost all of my caching these days with my Moto Droid. Turn on airplane mode and it is good for several hours of battery life. What GPS are you using and what program are you using to load the caches?
  12. This post caused me to decide to toss some rocks in the blender. Is your cache approved by the property owner?
  13. Well, there would have been a couple other times but I didn't want to over do it. Hah! We are like brothers from different mothers the vast majority of the time in the geocaching world.
  14. Months? I would give it a week after sending the email. If they don't respond then activate it or pass it on. I would sit on it until I heard back from the cacher who is clearly active. No rush to move it. Agreed. Good to have some interaction with you my friend. Even better when you agree with me!
  15. I think I have found caches on six days this month. I don't cache based on the calendar. I knew I don't have a find on August 26th but didn't find time to find a cache this past Monday. With some therapy I think I will get past this episode. The calendar tells me I need to find a cache on October 14. I may remember to try.
  16. No need to archive it unless a cacher takes down the wall. If that happens, then archive it That's my question, you are taking the wall apart to get the cache. Did your hunt do any damage to the area?
  17. Months? I would give it a week after sending the email. If they don't respond then activate it or pass it on. I would sit on it until I heard back from the cacher who is clearly active. No rush to move it.
  18. The FTF on my few caches hidden gets to find the cache the way I hid it. That's it. All the other reasons for people to define perks or lack thereof are simply their opinions.
  19. I think the answer is yes, if you delete a visit log o your own travel bug page the writer of the log will get a notification because you are deleting their caching history. But I could be wrong because it would never occur to me to do such a thing.
  20. Right. Few people use the King James version of the bible these days? You might want to do a bit more research. The KJV shares the top three spots in "sales" in the USA with the New international Version and the New Living Translation. Everyone is or should be free to choose what religious texts they may want to read or study. Claiming a particular text is not used is distributing false information in this case.
  21. No - I'm not making that assumption at all. If you read back through the thread you'll see that I've already referred to the idea that many people will indeed combine caching trips with other trips they would have made anyway - and that I advocate that as a way of reducing the net impact on the environment. And then of course there will be those challenges which preclude that method of caching i.e. find caches in X number of counties in 24 hours. Just one day? Sounds a bit mean Unless of course you're actually suggesting following your advice in perpetuity, as some kind of mantra for a happy life? In which case - the irony is that if you followed the advice you're so generously handing out, you probably wouldn't have felt motivated to post at all - or in fact to even read this thread in the first place I am going to go with my initial response to your OP. In my opinion, NO. We don't bother to think about the trivial perceived environmental aspects of our game. It doesn't seem you want to see responses such as this. We are all going to find caches and hopefully enjoy them. I am not going to be keeping track of my carbon footprint while I cache.
  22. With a good flashlight the tacks shine during the day. Have done a few during the daylight hours.
  23. My 10th anniversary of my first find will be December 26 of this year. This game has been a wonderful and life changing experience. It is a part of my daily existence.
  24. I used my Garmin 76cs in March when flying back to Seattle from Nashville. It never showed altitude above about 3,500 feet. I decided it was because the cabin was pressurized. I got great speed and location info though.
  25. I don't know about other Android smartphones but my Motorola Bionic has a true GPS and is at least as accurate as me Garmin 76cs. Yeah I know the Garmin is getting a bit long in the tooth. It mostly rests on my credenza these days while the Droid does the work.
