  1. I've used a Delorme PN40 for 5 years, until it crashed a week ago. So I bought a Garmin eTrex 20 and ir seems to work fine. Except that in wooded areas it seems to lose satellite much quicker than my PN40. Is there a difference in sensitivity between different units? Are there GPSes that have better satellite capabilities than others? == John
  2. Getting back into geocaching, and I need some refresher training... I've created a PQ that I want to send to my PN40 from my MacBook Pro. Seems to me there is a program you can run after you created the PQ but I forgot what it was. Any links or other help to get me started again? Thanks, John
  3. Tnx, CowBoyPapa. I've re-posted my question there. == John
  4. I use a Mac and the Cache Register Widget from Geocaching. Mostly, it works OK. But once in a while, like now, after I do a Pocket Query it will show up in the register as grayed out and the Status is UNAVAILABLE. I do get the .gpx file emailed so I know it was made OK. And, the PQ name is there as well as the time it was generated. Since the Cache Register Widget is the only method I have to upload caches to my DeLorme PN40, and I can't upload grayed out PQs, I am now unable to do any geocaching. Anyone know why this happens, and even better, how to fix it? BTW, at different times and locations it works just fine. I have been unable to determine a common condition for this to happen. Thanks for your help, == John
  5. Is there any way to show pocket queries on Google maps and/or Earth? I have this functionality with DeLorme Topo 8 but since I am usually on my Mac I can't run that software. I find it useful for planning a field trip as it will show a region where there are many caches so you can schedule your time more effectively. Thanks for your help, -- John
  6. Thanks for the replies, and suggestions. I will experiment more today to see if I can fix the problem, or if not, be able to report back with answers to the questions posed. I am very impressed that there was a response from Chip, representing Team Delorme. It's great to see a company taking an active role in supporting their customers! John
  7. Thanks for the replies. Using my 76Csx, I can go to the arrow page, and walk to the vicinity of the cache. As I get closer, the arrow moves to match the direction I need to go, and the distance goes down (until I pass it, when it goes back up). On the PN-40, the arrow is not consistent when I get within 40 feet or so. It moves around. At the same time, the distance does not lessen uniformly. For example, I may be 20 feet away, I walk 10 feet and stop, and the distance now shows 17 feet. So far, the PN-40 is MUCH harder to use than the 76Csx. I'm sure the PN-40 can do better than it is, and I feel there must be a setup issue. John
  8. I seem to have a setup problem with my new PN-40. I can load the caches OK, and use it to get close to the cache. But then, things go weird. Let's say the distance is 12 ft, if I walk 6 feet in the arrow direction the distance only goes down by maybe 10.5 feet. Also, the arrow does not always point in the same direction when you get closer (it may say 12 ft NE, for example, then walk 6 feet and it says it is 10.5 ft SW). My feeling is that there is a setup (like there was on my Garmin) that I have missed. Any help in setups would be appreciated. If I didn't explain this correctty, lease let me know. John
  9. Thanks to both of you. Found it fine with your help! I'll be going for a few caches to test the PN-40 but it looks like a keeper. John
  10. Thanks for your help, I have been able to upload a pocketfile to my PN-40 using Topo 7. That program is going to have some learning curve! Anyway, I have looked all around trying to access the text file pages for the various geocaches. I understand there is still a 800 character limit, but I can't find them at all on my PN-40. FWIW, I downloaded the .ZIP fire from Geocaching.com, unzipped it, and imported it into Topo 7. I can find all the caches there, no problem. I just can't find the text file. Am I missing an menu option or something? Thanks!
  11. On my Garmin 76Csx, I use GSAK to send pocket queries (which I use a lot) to my GPSr. I just received my PN-40, have a lot to learn! First question: how to find a list of nearby caches (pocket query?) and then download them to the NP-40? More questions will come later I assume but this is by far the biggest question I have at the moment. -- John
  12. I saw it too and ordered it. It ships from J&R in NYC, shipping date set for 12/2, to receive it here 12/8. Interesting! Remember also that DeLorme has a $50 rebate on PN-40s bought before 12/31, so my final cost (free shipping) will be $239.95. A bout as low as you can go... John
  13. Perfect! Thanks much, that did the trick. John I doubt that you need to reset it. It sounds like you changed the Course/Bearing setting. I'm not sure about the 76, but on my 60, on the Compass screen, hit menu and select "Bearing Pointer". When the "Course Pointer" is set, it behaves as you described.
  14. I have a 76CSx that is acting peculiar. When you go to the page that shows the direction arrow, it looks different. For example, the "tail" below the arrow head is only a few pixels thick, and there is a dotted black line at 90 degree angles across the arrow. When you follow the arrow, the distance increases; when you go opposite the arrow, distance gets closer. Exactly opposite of what it should do. Also, the arrow seems unstable, flipflopping in different directions. I wanted to try a system reset, but I'm not sure where it is, if there is one. None is shown in the manual. I don't want to poke a sharp object into every hole as I know there is also a speaker opening and I don't want to violate some water proofing. Any help you have on reseting the system is much appreciated. Thanks! John
  15. I bought a 76Csx (Amazon, great price) and so far it works well, at least as far as I an tell as a Newbie. I see the 60Csx is very popular, and am just curious--- is there any significant difference between the two? It seems like they use almost the same electronics and screen... John
  16. Thanks, that worked for the caches and waypoints. Don't know why I didn't see that earlier. Now, I'll load in a new POI file and see what happens.... John
  17. I'm new to this, and have been experimenting with different ways to add data to my Garmin GPSmap 76CSx. I've sent directly from Geocache, I've made GPX files and loaded them with EasyGPS, as well as GSAK. I've also used a custom macro to load using POILoader. As a result, I now have the same database in three locations/icons: Geocache, Waypoint, and CustomPOI. I've been looking on the 76CSx to find ways to delete them, and can't find a way. Could use some help in how to delete extraneous data from my GPS. Thanks! John
  18. How can I change my nickname (the one you see on the forum)? John
  19. What I'm trying to accomplish is as per the example on geocaching.com, that is, paperless caching. I have been able to load the GPX file (using EasyGPS) to the 76CSx, but I only get the main titles and headings (and coordinates), not the text and hints. So I am part way there, just trying to figure out how to go paperless. FWIW, this is important to me as I am traveling in a motor home and don't always have access to a printer hence the desire to go paperless. John
  20. Hi, we're new to geocaching so we have a lot to learn. I bought a Garmin GPS 76CSx, and am now a premium member on Geocaching.com. I have made a GPX file, it is on my desktop, now what do I do with it? Specifically, how do I load it into my "Geocaching" section of my GPS? Thanks for your help! John
