  1. So according to the history of Geocaching, the phrase was coined May 2000. So I would have to assume the first trackable Geocaches came a bit after that.. WheresGeorge.com has been around since December 23rd 1998. If you've never heard of it, its a website where you can punch in the serial number on your dollar bills, and then track them when other people punch in the number, and where they received it. They are one of the oldest online trackable websites I can think of.
  2. Most people do not appreciate or understand what the "Hacking" community actually does. The media only reports the people who do damage, which is not what hacking is all about. The majority of hackers, probably 99% are actually employeed by major companies and work in the IT industry helping to secure computer systems and electronics against the other 1%. Hackers help expose flaws in systems before they are taken advantage of, hackers help develop new technologies, create new ideas, think outside the box about how things are done & created & how they can be improved. The convention hosts 3 days of lectures where people learn about new technologies and thier weaknesses. Most people would be surprised to find out that some of those attending are government employees, either attending on thier own, or sent by the government to learn about new technology and techniques. There is actually allot of support behind the hacking community. Who do you think the people are that invent all the new gadgets? They are people who tinker with technology, and take things apart to figure out how they work. In fact Steve Jobs the founder of Apple Computers supports hackers, he himself was a Phone Hacker or "Phreak" before he started the Apple computer company.
  3. I am organizing a GeoCaching event to be held at the DEFCON computer security & hacking conference this year. The contest will comprise of puzzles that reveal GPS caches located around Las Vegas. The caches will be in electronic form, WIFI, RFID, Cellular Ect.. Teams will receive puzzles and clues via a website that will track each teams progress, and then the team that either finishes the puzzles or gets the furthest over the weekend of the conference will receive a package of prizes. We are in need of a few things, mostly prizes, but Im also anticipating the fact that some people may show up at the conference not knowing there was going to be a Geocaching contest and will not have a GPS. If you have any kind of promo items, (hats, binders, ect) or something you think techie geeks and hackers would appreciate, and can offer it to us cheap or as a donation please contact me. If you have any used GPS's that you can either donate or sell to us cheap that would also be helpfull. So far I have secured 1 etrex. Also we are fabricating our own urban style caches that will blend into the Vegas enviroment and hopefully evade detection by the thousands of tourists. If you have created something you think will work, and would like to donate a cache please contact us. Any and all help is greatly appreciated..
