  1. LOL. Well it depends on what I am coming from. If I am used to living in a cardboard box or no home at all then that sounds like a perfect place. (Actually a townhouse in Florida in terrible shape sounds apealing as well) It also depends on the fact that I know down the road the house is going to be fixed up free of charge. I take it you don't own a colorado or returned yours before you really got to know the unit. My colorado has increased the ease of geocaching ten fold. I was able to go back and find caches in a matter of minutes that I had failed at finding on multiple occasions with my pocket pc. I am able to head any direction without having a ton of pages floating around in my car and my bag. My colorado can list the closest geocaches, allow me to read the descriptions/hints/logs, route me on the road to the cache, route me through the woods to the cache, log the cache as found, and then I can even check my Colorado to see how much more daylight I will have before I need to get back to my vehicle. I'd say that is pretty doggone spiffy.
  2. Actually, the question is, "Why not?" Why did the man climb the mountain? Because it was there. And you can be sure, there were those who thought he was nuts. -David However, don't you think the man climbing the mountain spent a little time at the peak to enjoy it? To each their own, but I have seen some posters cop a superior attitude on here because of their numbers and denounce others ideas simply because they didn't have as many finds under their name. This always gives me a chuckle; they feel superior because they are good at finding lost tupperware really fast.
  3. Yes but one can stay and enjoy the wildlife in its natural habitat. Just make sure not to make any sudden moves ... and never ever feed them.
  4. I'm glad I am not the only one having this problem. Lately I haven't been turning my road maps off when I switch to the geocaching from the automotive profile. I miss seeing the topo lines but prefer to know what side of the road the cache is on. I have had the road move a few hundred feet due to the base maps being so bad. I tend to search for the cache in map mode instead of compass mode. Another beef of mine is how many steps it takes to recheck the description/hint/logs after you are actively searching for the cache. How simple would it have been to have these listed on the soft menu. Instead we have to relist the geocaches, choose the geocache, then click on the description, then finally you have access to the logs and the hint. After that you click the button to navigate to it again.
  5. The big question is why? Are the numbers that important? This is the reason I get acronynms for logs instead of intelligent conversations. I prefer to enjoy the area .. find out why the person picked this place as a spot. I like to leave a good story both in the handwritten log and the online one. And I always try to take a few pictures for every cache I find. I like to spend at least an hour at the cache site and if I am hungry have a picnic there. Why would I wan't to blaze through 100 caches and not enjoy the areas I am visiting. To each his own .. but I have no motivation to waste the precious few caches in my area by spending 2 minutes at each one.
  6. I totally agree. I am bothered by the glitches but still don't want to give my baby up. But can we really expect hardware fixes? Has Garmin done a total recall on a product like that? Sounds great in theory but I am skeptical that they would spend millions of dollars to do so to apease the small minority of users who come to this site. I read earlier that forums are mostly populated by people who either like to argue or are coming here to complain about their product. I have no data on this but I would guess that most Colorado users don't even come to this site and wouldn't even know to demand a hardware fix. Don't get me wrong .. it has me bothered that a waterproof GPSr is not entirely waterproof. I am also bothered by the fact that sometimes my cache descriptions are garbled with text written over text, periodic crashes of the system, no mp3 playback for Wherigo, no way to display correct road maps with the topographical maps (the base maps are way off .. so you can either have city navigator nt or the topo maps displaying .. but not both), and having to navigate through several menus to re-display a cache's description while you are actively navigating to the cache. I am pretty confident these issues will be fixed in later firmware updates (besides the mp3 capability). edit: And even with all these glitches if asked whether someone should purchase the colorado, I would tell them absolutely.
  7. I am a male who is a supporter of the original pro-life feminist movement. And I want to say thank you for articulating with class how adults should treat this cache. I would have no problem with a cache placed in an area that barred men.
  8. The above link stated this: So that makes me think it is possible. Heck it needs to be possible. It's absolutely ridiculous that I can choose to either have accurate road maps or accurate topo maps (beyond the simple shading), but not both of them at the same time. Our colorados are powerhouses and shouldn't have any problem with this.
  9. But how do we get these different mapsets to show correctly? When I have City Navigator NT maps loaded it turns off my ability to see the contour lines on my topo map (in the geocaching profile). I see the shading but the lines are much better for judging terrain. I know I could simply turn the City Navigator maps off but then the basemap roads are way way off. Also when in automotive mode it would be nice to show the topo map as well. edit: Lol .. I may have found the answer in the above link. rdit #2: Well no. I still don't know how to set maps to transparent. Any suggestions?
  10. Ok .. I love my Colorado. Yes, it has some drawbacks that for the most part I believe will be fixed. My problem is, there is a lot of power with this unit and I am barely scratching the surface. I come here daily looking for tips on how to properly use my Colorado. It is difficult to skim through all the negative posts to find what I am looking for, so I am creating this thread. I am taking it one step further, for every tip I post I am going to use the frog smiley to make it stand out in this thread. Place a change profile shortcut on everyone of your profile's shortcut pages. (Shortcuts>Setup>Shortcuts>Add Page>then choose "profile change") Turn your compass off when searching for a geocache when the arrow is eratic. (Shortcuts>Setup>Heading>Compass (choose off)) Absolutely get a screen protector to protect your investment. You can buy them for around $10. In order to use your Colorado to do the driving portions of your geocache you must purchase City Navigator NT 2008. (Yes this one has me annoyed, but I will save that for another thread) The Sun and Moon function is a lot more useful than I thought (It shows the sunrise and sunset times as well as the moon rises). It allowed me to estimate if I had enough time to fit in one more cache that evening and not get stuck out in the dark like I did with my first Colorado run. (Shortcuts>Others>Sun and Moon) I know some of these have been rehashed on other threads, but it is nice to compile these all into one place.
  11. I wondered what the draw was for hiking as well. I assumed having 3D topo maps would be a hiker's dream. I am still a noob when it comes to using my colorado and am always looking for better ways to use it. The manual is zero help in that regards. I would assume trackback option will eventually be added since it should only be a software issue. Right now I have to remind myself to place a waypoint at my car when I go for longer treks for a cache .. either that or simply pay attention to where I parked.
  12. tnle2 I believe that is a Honda you are driving, quite possibly around a 1998 model. (Same car I have) I was curious to how deep I could sink a screw into the window frame there. What type/size screw did you use?
  13. I wouldn't dispute that some areas have less trees. I am simply saying overall we have a lot more trees than 50 years ago; just because you don't see them in your area doesn't mean there has been a general decline. I have plenty of wild white birch trees on my property. I choose to live in the country where I am surrounded by trees. I was a child of the 80s and we were plagued with the 70s mindset that the environment was on its deathbed. In school we were forced to write essays and make posters on how bad things were, instead of being allowed to question the hypothesis. At that time the scare was 'global cooling,' now they are worried about the Earth heating up even though there hasn't been a recorded increase in overall temperature in the past 10 years. So once again, if it makes you feel good to plant a tree ... go ahead. If it makes you feel good to recycle, do that as well. But if you think in doing so you are helping an ailing planet, save your energy.
  14. I've killed several copperheads over the years but for some reason this pic has me feeling things slithering up my legs. It could also be due to the fact that I found a small copperhead inside my house last year. Regarding those snakes sunning themselves on the road .. I've found the best way to kill them is the brake method. Right as you are driving over them, slam on the brakes. I'll leave the results to your imagination.
  15. Good gracious ... I am almost speechless .. almost. I run a kung fu school and have frequented martial arts forums at times. I've seen individuals itching for a verbal fight over the silliest things, for example .. there was a thread over 500 pages long complaining that the pajamas I wear when I throw punches and kicks aren't the same pajamas other users wear. Here I am on a forum dedicated to helping people use billion dollar satellites to find tupperware in the woods and there is still bickering. Give it a rest. Does it really matter? 30 years from now are you really going to care that some people prefer a different GPSr than you? (From a new Garmin Colorado owner)
  16. LOL!! I love it. See my responses on the subject in this thread. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...=192759&st= Stupid trees .. they killed Sonny Bono.
  17. I would say do it if it makes you feel good. If you are doing it because you fear our tree population is critically low, I would save my energy. We have more trees today (in the US at least) than we did through the first 50 years of the last century. The reason for this is because we have moved from 'deforestation' to 'clearcutting.' Deforestation is the removal of a forest with no intention of establishing a future stand of trees. Clearcutting is both "a harvest and a regeneration of the forest, and is done to improve future stand quality, growth, genetics, and species composition." http://www.wvu.edu/~agexten/forestry/clrcut.htm But if you really want to go plant a tree I'll place a cache in my front yard. I had a gorgeous white pine get knocked over by the wind. It passed up some ugly cedars that look out of place and got my pine. Stupid wind.
  18. Yes it is. I was about to log some finds before I went out to mow and then head to church. I don't feel like the geocache has truly been found until it is logged online.
  19. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong initially but my multiple gpx files are now loading. Thanks. My second question still has me puzzled. I'd like to have ALL the logs from my pqs and not just those on the first page. Sometimes I need more clues and other times I simply enjoy sitting at the cache site reading through all the adventures and not only the most recent.
  20. I hadn't even thought of it from this prospective. I have been working hard at making my logs as short as possible. I like to talk .. a lot and this is evident in my writing. And I can make an adventure out of finding navel lint. I'll make sure I post longer logs now. Heck, this weekend was full of stories: I got to ride across my first ferry (that had a sign that read "No Smoking" even though all the workers were smoking), I chased a turkey down the road till it flew off, I saw a huge outdoor picnic table in the shape of a cross beside a church built up off the ground to resist flooding, I had to wait 45 minutes to snag a micro because a couple decided it was romantic to makeout in broad daylight next to a port-a-potty, I learned that a flashlight left in the car is pretty much useless when you are on a cliff in the dark in the woods, one cache was right beside a freezer that had been thrown out a week or two before full of food..... yum, girlfriends don't make adequate gpsr mounts in the car (they don't pay attention to the gps to tell you when to turn), microcaches are of the devil.
  21. Run .. don't walk, to go buy this. I was fortunate that the store I was looking for a trekking pole/monopod in didn't have what I want. The salesperson suggested the gorillapod. I tried it on a chain they had as a divider and it worked perfectly. It takes up a little more room than the mini tripod I had been using but will work anywhere .. and I mean anywhere. Its legs have rubber all along its length so it is very grippy. I attached it to a fence, used it as a tripod on a rock, and even used it on my gear s***. This thing works! And it feels very solid. You will thank yourself for buying this. I do. Thank you Chris.
  22. I experienced this problem as well. Here I thought finding a gps with an electronic compass was the way to go and now I find out it is the problem. Is this simply a software based problem or is this something all electronic compass based gps's encounter? I found that I had to go back to the 'list geocache' page and redirect to the cache to get a correct reading several times on a cache. Once I did that it gave a total different direction and distance. I was on the side of a steep hill in the woods and wouldn't have been able to move enough to get my direction from the sattelites. So should I only use the electronic compass at a dead stop? Or even then? I'll test it both ways tomorrow.
  23. I understand that, friend, but the roads I am talking about are straight roads. They are simply in the wrong place. It isn't anything new. Most mapping programs I have used took several years to update a major bypass here in my rural area of Kentucky, and don't get me started on the detail we get on google maps. I'll probably still use my iguidance on the road and estimate my entry point for hiking. It would be nice if caches listed a nearby address for easy entry into my driving software. There is probably some addon out there that will do this.
  24. Yes, but in the area I am in I need to know which road to take to get to a cache. I take the wrong one and I may be on the wrong side of the lake and have to backtrack 30 minutes on the road. Five years ago I was using mapopolis to take me straight to the cache by first guiding me on the roads I needed to get there. This is the first time I had heard that a basic map = a very non accurate map. I would assume a basic map would have the main roads placed accuratly and the side roads missing.
  25. I know I am preaching to the choir but that sucks on so many levels. Even if the basemaps are off they should at least auroute us to our caches. Just one more thing to go on the bug list. I'm not all doom and gloom though .. I have faith they will patch it eventually.
