  1. Ummmm I think the issue here may not be one of whether or not the Ottawa people are naughty or nice. I think it is one of walking in to a public Forum and saying "I don't like those people." and not expecting a backlash. I don't like a lot of people, in fact, I think I like less people than I don't like. I am pretty brash but I am not sure I have ever walked in to a room and loudly pointed out the people I don't like and named and shamed them. I know there was not a finger pointed at a single person in the OP but change what I said above and think about someone walking in a room and singling out a group of people and saying "I don't like that group for such and such a reason." You think that would not be a room silencer? Forums are the technological equivalent of a large room. Although we are sitting alone at a computer, the concept is that of a large group conversation. Sorry, OP, but I am going to tell you that you walked in and pointed out a group and acted like they weren't there and named and shamed them. Most of the posts have been about defending the group. Never met the group, agree with Blue Quasar, I am guessing there are some I would like and some I don't (and some that like me and most that wouldn't). But this should not be about defending the CCC group it should be about how we act in public forums. I am going to be the one to name and shame now. I think the post was rude. It could have been crafted a different way. "Is anyone interested in creating group in Ottawa for this very narrow purpose." No need to mention your negative feelings towards someone else in the room. End of rant....
  2. Ummm maybe not that hard since you took the time to write and entire response and hit submit. I mean isn't that a lot of work to be negative for someone trying not to be. Of course, I asm working on being less sarcastic. The being a better person thing is quite a challenge.

    Garmin Help!

I am having trouble with my Garmin reading the GPX files. A couple of weeks back I noticed that I had loaded some gpx files on my garmin but it told me none had been loaded. I thought it strange but I reloaded a some new gpx files and everything seemed to work. Tonight the same thing has happened but I cannot get with reloading or any method any geocaches onto my Garmin. Does anyone have any ideas. I know this is the general Canadian forum and there is probably a forum or place to get help with this but I am pressed for time because I have BFL tomorrow night and I was hoping to get it fixed before then. Surely there is a Canadian genius out there that can help. Thanks,
  4. I think this one is covered under the "truth in advertising" laws. What??!!??
  5. borderline SPAM, its been tried before and didn't go down very well your log should be about your experience "hunting" for the cache not an advertising vehicle CD But what if it is a mystery cache? How could that be bad.
  6. Hey everyone should put the website in their logs for their caches. Especially if you are from Ontariario. Or is this breaking some rule?
  7. Not to be pedantic but the location you mention is not in Durham Region but in Kawartha Lakes. Durham Region dumps its cars in different forest locations.
  8. I am specifically looking for the August monthly challenge (although I am guessing in a month I may be looking for the September one also ) but does anyone know an easy way to find the Ontario version of these monthly challenges easily and quickly? Or just point me to them? Thanks,
  9. Down the Canadian Gorge Not sure if you are taking time to go to Niagara Falls but if you are this is a good one. Very few tourists at least when I was there at 7 am But I must have visited Niagara Falls a thousand times and never knew this was here. You are right down close to some pretty powerful water.
  10. Gravity in effect (Trucks only). As an aside: Why do feel the need to take the mickey out of Ontario all the time.

    Toronto Zoo

This is not specifically a question about geocaching but it is a question about maps and Canada. Has anyone noticed that the Metro Toronto Zoo on googlemaps is written in Asian characters? I tried with two different browsers and I get the same thing. Anyone know what is going on here? I first noticed this on the geocaching website. (Needless geocaching tie in, yes I know they are using a googlemaps overlay.) ToonAl
  12. The question that I have been pondering is the critical mass. There has to be a perfect size where you get the above mentioned "kick" as well as remaining agile enough. At a certain group size moving that many people cache to cache must in itself become somewhat of a handicap.
  13. I hope the original poster does not mind but I used babelfish to translate his original text to help the discussion along. -------------------------------- After a hundred mysteries solved. I have a question on the possibilities limited to hide information in a page. I will not list here all the easy ways discovered with the wire of the masks, fear of revealing the solution of several enigmas. Here some simple examples to launch discussion: - To write white text on white - To register l' information in the properties of an image - To post information on an image in very very small characters Did you discover another thing?
  14. All you have to do is search for caches in Ontario and when the list comes up you click on the little blue ribbon at the top of the list (whatever the symbol for the favourites is in the listing). it will reprioritize the list in that order. Okay maybe I am dense as a post. (don't answer that.) But I have clicked around and I am not sure where you are able to search for all the cache in Ontario. I am sure there is instruction for this somewhere. Again looking for help. toonal
  15. Can anyone explain how this search was done? I mean ordering by Favourite numbers? is this a Groundspeak website thing or some manual method? thanks, ToonAl

    PET Bottle Preforms

Exactly my thought lol. Anything over $1.00 is too much IMO. I found a 30-pack for $27, but shipping was $37 lol. Order a million for your sodie pop factory and I am guessing the price drops.

    Hide Statistics

A note because I may be one of the two people mentioned. I made a mention of the winter attribute on caches a month back. I have over 1000+ finds and 1 hide. So even if it wasn't me then guilty as charged. But from a person who is curling in his toes at the original comment let me make a few points. I have seen a lot of hides. I know what I like, read Fangly Fish, Kdotbluedot and entogeek among others. I often end up thinking "How do they imagine this stuff up" and no matter how I try to think up good caches I find myself unworthy. Do I feel guilt about my one hide, sure every now and then, but then I could go out and toss a piece of tupperware into the bushes and, as has been mentioned, that would help no one. In fact in a weird sort of way it would take a way a spot for someone with imagination to hide a really good cache. Do I feel like I am sucking off the system? Nope. I find my strength is in ambassadorship. I talk so much about caching my friends are sick of me. I have taken quite a few people caching. In fact I introduced FanglyFish and rngrrngr to the game, so when you do one of their amazing caches give pause to think how they found out about the whole thing. Maybe it was one of those one hide guys who needs a tiny bit of thanks. Do I feel that my one hide also takes away my right to make a comment about hides. Obviously not. In fact after i made my comment people taught me a whole different way of looking at things. Does it still frustrate me when I walk into a forest and I am up to my knees in snow wondering if I have no chance. A little less than before I made the comment on the forums but ya still. Did I go yesterday and look for the same cache I think is hidden in the snow, yep and DNF'ed again, and I will go back. My comment was never a criticism, it was just a comment, that is what discussion is about. Anyway thanks to all who have hidden for me. Keep it up. Have a great day.

    Winter in Canada

I definitely think KDot is missing the fourth option which is "Does not know better." Perfect example, yesterday two of us headed out to do a cache which we DNF'ed on. But I mentioned to my partner that we could not even see the terrain because of the snow. My partner DNF'ed it and today it is marked "Disabled" because of the snow by the CO. They could easily marked the not available in winter attribute. Saying that I understand the digging in the snow concept (which I have obviously done). I read the unavailable in winter as going to be covered in snow take your chances. That way say in early December here in tropical Ontario when there is no snow I ignore the attribute "not available" attribute until it snows. As for environmentally sensitive areas I would hope those are mentioned right in the cache description for the benefit of us and the environment.

    Winter in Canada

Can I mention how many caches I have found in Ontario do not seem to have the winter attribute marked whither `not available` or 'available'. I am not sure if I am the only one that finds it frustrating to walk into the woods knee deep in snow and wonder if the cache is available. Today I did a cache which was on the ground under 2 feet of snow. Now it was near a tree and I dug it out but it seemed strange that this one would not have a "Not available in winter" marker on it. I think I played with a bunch of my Pocket Queries once and on average of a 400 cache pocket query removing "Not available in winter" had the effect of removing 6 caches maybe. Surely it should be more than this. Just putting this out for discussion to see if I am missing something. ToonAl
  20. ditto BTW, has anyone noticed that for the Ontario souvenir the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow seems to be in the US? Just asking?
  21. You're not referring to the Ontario Trails Project are you? I know that I worked with Juicepig for some maps for Spring Fling - if that's what you're using switch to the OTP for the current, updated maps of Tiffen as that was merged back in and updated with attendees tracklogs after the event closed. Oops I gave credit where it wasn't due. So many animal names it gets confusing. Thanks.
  22. Okay i know this is surely discussed here somewhere but I hate the search capability of the forums and just looking for an easy answer. Anyway I am looking for easy steep by step directions to load Juicepigs trail maps on to my Oregon 400. I downloaded the files on the site but I cannot figure the part where I get them on to the actual gps. or maybe I am missing the instructions. i did check the technology forum here but could not find directions there either. 23. this is the one I remember the funny thing is I did not realize there was online readers. but now I cannot find a site to read it. Meanwhile the other one in Burlington works perfectly with my Ipod. Thanks for the help
  24. I remember seeing a mystery cache in the Toronto area that used one of those 2-D barcodes that you can read into your smart phone. i am trying to find it again but of course now that I have the capability I cannot find it. any help would be great. For some reason i am think north-east of the city.
  25. i followed your instructions and i can't replicate the problem you're having I have the problem mentioned above. I especially see it when I have been on the site for a long time. I am at work and what I will do is go to an area where I may want to cache. I will start look at all the caches around then i might move to another area and all of a sudden it showing me all caches as not found even though I know there are some that I have found in the area. This is even though I am logged on at the top of the page. I am using FireFox 3.6.12 alb
