  1. Yeah I usually leave my card, and other trade items also.
  2. Sorry. But I believe they should be free. How To Build an Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie
  3. Nothin' wrong with sporTrak Maps. Except for the darn cracks...
  4. I'd buy one. Does it come with the lanyard? Or as pictured. I might pay 5 bucks.
  5. That's strange. I would bet on the software, as I've heard it's got some bad innacuracies in certain places.... But, I don't know...
  6. One time i was caching with my friend, and we took a wrong trail, and started bushwacking a little bit. Then, we looked down and we were covered in ticks. Not really extreme, but not fun at all... We charged out of the brush and started looking all over trying to find them.
  7. What about laminated cards that have the name of the cache that was found, or the number of the find for the cacher, underneath the lamination?
  8. how did you break it? I've always been more worried about the screw in the meridian than the actual lanyard screw.
  9. I know people say that the lanyard ring is "paper clip gague metal" but thats some seriously strong unbendable metal, from what i have seen. You can really yank on it, and it doesnt go anywhere. I dont really see the need for another anchor thingie.
  10. You put them on your watch list, and on the query page, you select, CACHES THAT ARE ON MY WATCH LIST, and this is the key part that you missed, you also select THAT I HAVE NOT FOUND. you will only get the query of those specific ones. You dont have to mess with the others on your watch list.
  11. Why would you want to put it in a cache?
  12. I am actually glad that I had no idea what all those symbols were. If I had known what it was, and could translate it on the fly, I would have been a little worried...
  13. Updates should be free. Period. If you buy the software, just because the world changes, doesn't mean they should have a reason to charge you for making their now obsolete software, be current again. I think that sucks.
  14. My first multi that i finished last week, started with a laminated leaf hung in a tree with the coords on one side. It also had the hint encrypted for the next leg. The next leg is a tiny card hidden under the bark of a tree in the middle of a field. The next leg is a rock, sitting next to a tree, with the coords and a hint engraved in them with a dremel tool. The last leg is an ammo can. It turned out to be pretty difficult, just like I hoped for. One guy couldnt find the first leg, and gave up.
  15. I agree with graldrich. If you are looking at another GPS besides just those too, get a meridian for sure. I have a meridian Gold, and its awesome. I can load a rediculous amount of maps in there and its VERY easy to use. A bit big though...
  16. I am a Magellan guy. I'm not a big fan of the eTrex's at all. I think they are overpriced, and when I used one side by side with my SporTrak, the Garmin failed miserably, in reception, and user interface. However, in your case, I may suggest the eTrex. They are just fine for caching, so that is not my concern. I know if I was running around Iraq (thank god I'm not) I would want the smallest, most rugged thing I could find. I am speaking pretty much from a "durability" standpoint here. I would never buy an eTrex personally, but they may stand up to abuse better than a SporTrak. The SporTraks float also, I don't know if that is any incentive. As far as a lanyard, every sporTrak I've ever seen comes with one. The directional pointer is a petty difference. They are both arrows, and they both point you in the right direction. Big deal if Garmin's is better. Also, the resolution is great on the eTrex, but I think the font size is way too small. Also, the rebates will come. They just take a while. If you are persistant, they will always send them. So, coming from an anti eTrex person (not anti Garmin) I am reccomending the eTrex for your specific needs. I think it will suit you better. You can stick them in your pocket, and not worry about it.
  17. Seriously... It seems most of the complainers in the forums are people who have not even given a decent attempt to JUST CACHE. I think these forums should be closed for a little while. Just so people can appreciate the actual fun of caching, and not bitching about every little thing, and calling the Moderators and Approvers Nazi's and Facists...
  18. Haha... thats hilarious... The "Institute"... Some people have too much time on their hands.
  19. I'm not really a big fan of anything besides Traditionals and Multi's. I don't really get any thrill of finding something that everyone can see. If a statue or a plaque is a virtual, big deal, I found something that tons of people have seen. It's like logging something as really special, that's not really special... With traditionals, the fact that many of them have been hidden for a very long time is cool in and of itself. It means that it was hidden well, and only other geocachers and myself know where they are. Everyone sees virtuals everyday if they are in an urban setting, but hiding a physical object actually takes some creativity and skill. Reading a sign and emaling an owner is not very exciting. Trying to be stealthy and grabbing a micro in a very crowded area can be a rush! Plus, you get to pretend all sorts of fun stuff. Like the cache is a top secret file that you need to save the world! If this game/hobby/etc. were only virtuals, I definitely would not be caching.
  20. First off, I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but just because you can't understand a simple process, doesn't mean it's bunk. Using a PDA for caching has saved me HOURS AND HOURS of time, not to mention paper and ink. I may have a bunch of caches that I will most likely not ever find, but as long as I have a complete list if everything that I will probably find, that's fine with me. Also, if you are not using Cachemate, you are setting yourself up for failure, in my opinion. Cachemate makes everything easier, in the smallest amount of steps. If there are hundreds of caches in a 10 mile radius, I suggest you get off your a** and go find some of them. I could only wish for that many within 10 miles. As far as picking single caches for a query, if you know exactly which ones you want, add them to your watch list. Then, make the query send you caches that you HAVENT FOUND, and that ARE ON MY WATCH LIST. I make queries quite often of 1-5 caches, of the new ones that pop up. So, with some simple reading of instructions, and a little bit of patience, you will get the hang of paperless caching, and you will never go back. []
  21. happens to me to... and it sucks... i was waiting for a query today, and I got impatient, so I wanted to download the loc, and it didnt work. Fix it!
  22. Yeah, the micros around here in Southern Cal, Santa Barbara are usually awesome. They are hidden very well, and many have a lot of time and effort put into them. I think they have their place anywhere. While I like finding cool stuff in ammo cans, micros can be just as fun.
