  1. What about caches that I muggled so I could be the LTF? I am kidding of course. I probably wouldn't brag about being LTF on a cache, since that may mean you didn't rehide it good enough (not always of course)...
  2. Surely you could have found a rock or a nice pretty leaf around to trade for. Ok, I'm kidding, but I have seen it done...
  3. Nice (assuming the van is the container). What cache is that? I tried going throuh yours, but none were listed as "large" containers. Again, assuming the van is the container, I wonder how people recognize it as a cache container without feeling they're breaking into a car though. Is there a logo on it somewhere? I guess you don't have to worry about muggles so much as you do the tow truck, huh?
  4. My first thought, given the current post-9/11 environment, is that tampering with anything related to the mail system is probably not the best thing to do. But that's just my opinion, and wouldn't feel comfortable placing it or looking for it.
  5. Here is my list of suggestions I put together awhile ago. A real geocaching mode. The current one is a complete waste. How about fixing the last 5 custom symbols on the 60 series so they can be assigned to waypoints? A one-button push (and hold) to toggle maps (from City Navigator to Topo and back). A one-button push (and hold) to turn off/on the data fields on the screen. I typically have 4 fields displayed on the map when driving, but then if I actually want to scroll around the map, I need to turn them off (Or else I'm stuck with this little itsy-bitsy-teeny-wheeny map). Have waypoints stored on SD card (so the number is only limited by the size of the card). POIs just don't cut it for geocaching (for me). Upping the number of characters in the name/note for waypoints. The POI limits are much more reasonable. Some kindof internal memory for the compass so I don't have to remember to calibrate it everytime I change the batteries. Customized order for the "find" menu. Right now I can only order it by "autoorder" which is ordered by the most recently used, or the default order....neither of which I like. I'd like to order it as waypoints, custom POI, Food, Gas, Exits...etc, and have it always show up that way. A better warning system for upcoming turns...I'd like it to beep 2 or 3 seconds earlier than it does now. With all of that said, it's still a great unit.
  6. I find litter on about 80% of the caches I find. Well, you asked if I had found anything illegal. Other than that though, I haven't really ran across anything.
  7. I believe this is a wrong assumption. See this post by me from 2 1/2 years ago. At that time it appeared to function differently depending on if you were using zip code or home coordinates, and I haven't tested much since then. I just always make sure my PQs return less than 500 now.
  8. Yep. You and I live in the same area, so I know exactly what you mean (Have you driven through the Eisenhower interchange yet? The thing beeps constantly!) I've ran into that though a few times....where all of a sudden I hear the turn beep, but it's just letting me know not to exit. Hey, thanks, Mr. GPS for almost making me swerve across 3 lanes of traffic. I've learned to make sure I read ahead a bit so I know what turns are coming up. Oh, one more goofy thing...I went to Lancaster the other night for a Christmas music show....but it oddly had me go one way there, and a completely different way on the way back. I mean, not even close to the same way. They were pretty much the same distance/time wise, but still...
  9. I hate all of those suggestions. Since you haven't found a cache yet, this should be your to-do list: Prior to Christmas Pick out a cache (or several) that sounds interesting and print out the page(s). Read the online manuals for the two GPSrs you mention, and print out the section regarding marking a waypoint, editing the coordinates, and navigating to those coords. Buy batteries Christmas: Open present, feign surprise Put in the batteries. Go outside, let it get a signal, put in the coordinates for the cache, hit "go to" jump in car, and go find it. Spend the rest of Christmas day caching while thinking up excuses to blow off future work days to cache.
  10. Perhaps that was the problem. To test that, I could've stopped navigation and then punched up the destination again to see if it would calculate correctly. In fact, maybe I'll test that again on the way home tonight. About the only other goofy thing I've experienced with it was coming back from WV a few weeks ago. We pulled up the closest Bob Evans and it sent me past the exit, to the next exit, and then had me turn around and get back on the highway going the other way. We actually saw the sign for Bob Evans as we passed the correct exit but figured there must be another one at the next exit where the GPS was telling me to go. I wasn't that happy with basically having to go 3 extra miles to the next exit, then backtrack 3 miles to the correct exit. I wonder why it didn't just tell me to get off that exit in the first place. Of course, in hindsight, I could've just followed the signs to Bob Evans, but being me, I trusted the GPS and assumed that there was another one where the GPS was having me get off. Blind faith in technology...
  11. Ditto all the above. To see a bunch of trolls in action, and clarify exactly how they behave, visit any IMDB.com movie and look at the message boards. I'll use Star Wars as an example (although pretty much any movie will do). Look it up, then look through the message board. Some good examples of threads started by trolls are: Star Wars (1977) fans are close minded: Worst. Movie. Ever? Star Wars - Most overrated rubbish of all time Those are obviously topics started for the sole purpose of getting the masses riled up. However, people buy into it again and again.
  12. I've been really happy with my 60CSx, despite me knowing some quicker ways around the area than it seems to. But the other day I was going home, and decided to take the highway instead of it's suggested route (because I knew traffic was backed up). This is kindof hard to explain, but basically the unit wanted to send me south 4 miles, then east about 10, and opted for east first, then go south. Anyways, after I passed it's suggested exit, for the next 10 miles, it basically wanted me to get off of every exit and backtrack. What was really annoying was I got all the way to my exit (a good 10 miles past it's suggested route) and it STILL wanted me to turn around and head back. By this time I was only about 7 miles from home, so it telling me to backtrack 10 miles just so I could be back on it's suggested route was getting annoying. MY estimated time to my housewas about 10-12 minutes, but the unit was telling me about 30 because of the route it kept recalculating. Even when I had gone a couple more miles, it was still insisting that I should keep turning off of my more-or-less direct route home and make this big loop back around. Finally when I had gone a couple more miles and passed the last major road before my house, it finally recalculated correctly. It was quite annoying. Anything I should've done differently? Granted, I was just more-or-less testing the thing since I knew where I was going, but I'd be quite annoyed if I was in an unfamiliar area and had to drive another 20 minutes out of my way because it doesn't recalculate correctly. Anyone notice anything similar?
  13. Yep, cachemate contains pretty much everything that's on the cache page except the photos. You'll get the hider, type, container size, hint, description, the last few logs, difficulty/terrain, date hidden...etc.
  14. Yep...3 maps (All in Ohio). One is $9.95 and the other two are $5. Wow, I can only imagine the money those people must be rolling in I think I'll pass.
  15. Yep, that's one of the better rest stop caches I've done. It's a little bit better than the magnetic keyholder by the garbage dumpster. I also just knocked off The Beer Well that was on this list. Great location and story, so thanks for the recommendation.
  16. That sounds like one of you has the compass turned on and one has it turned off (you can press and hold the "page" key to toggle it on and off). Also, nobody has mentioned yet that just because they're the same unit, doesn't mean they're going to point you to the exact same spot. There's that whole accuracy thing that could account for one pointing 20 feet away from where the other one is pointing.
  17. I've only ever seen one newbie (with about 2 finds) doing that, and I quickly corrected her. I think I would have to kill myself if I had been doing it that way for 2 years. But seeing as how it's you and not me, I will just not-so-politedly point and laugh.
  18. I'd have to agree with this. While I've seen dozens of caches with a similar idea, they've all been fake animals/animal parts. Using a real animal part would most likely be quickly scavenged.
  19. I don't have a problem with the buttons while driving. Maybe a little difficulty at night, but since I know which button is which after using it awhile, it's not a big deal. My biggest issue is finding new locations/POIs while driving. I don't like either of my "find" screen options, which are either to have it in some default order which I hate, or to have it in order by my last accessed (which means that "food" or "gas" are never in the same place). It's also a bit difficult to do a search by name or by category while driving. But all-in-all it works ok, and those issues are kindof minor Yes, it's very easy to see. You can specify different colors/brightness levels, and even specify a different color for day and night (It switches automatically at sunset/sunrise). I did have an issue with the car vibration making it bounce a bit and it was hard to read, but that has more to do with the mount I'm using than the unit (see my comments below regarding that). I use the default suction-cup mount, and it works...uhm...ok. It's cheap and only faces straight ahead (so I can't curve it towards me) but I don't seem to have a problem with it. It has fallen off two or three times over the last couple of months, but it's pretty easy just to stick back on. As said earlier, I did have an issue with car vibration, but only if the unit was "free floating" on the mount....I've since figured out to make sure I have the mount positioned so that the antenna is touching the windshield, which steadies it.
  20. Yep, didn't think of that. If I pull up the nearest caches out there, it does show that one as being found last on November 19th, so it's probably something on your end.
  21. That's weird...interestingly though (in your third screenshot) it says the last time it was found was October 31st, so it acts like it's ignoring your log.
  22. I use pretty much the exact same setup as Doc, and pretty much the same thing happened to me 2 or 3 days ago (after upgrading). I've had that happen to me twice before (prior to upgrading). I think I read somewhere on these forums that this behavior may be caused when you are at a certain map location where two sections "join". I don't have time to find the thread right now due to a meeting, but I believe the guy who found it said he could recreate it at will be driving through the same location again. Perhaps this is what happened? Each time it has happened to me I have been unable to recreate it though, as it seems to work fine after I turn the unit back on.
  23. Sounds great! I'll be checking that out when I get back home. Thanks for the heads up.
  24. Thanks. That did it....they sure don't make it easy to find your software versions.
  25. Hmmm...mine says I already have the latest version (for the 60CSx). How do I tell what version it is? I don't see it saying anything about version number on the welcome screen when I turn it on. Also, totally unrelated, but under Setup-> Units there is a Temperature (Fahrenheit/Celcius) setting. What is this for? Surely there isn't a thermometer in the thing, is there? If there is, I apparently have never ran across it, and can't figure out how to use it, but it sure would be handy.
