  1. That's too cool about the nickname FrankVegas. My wife's parents live in Franklin, but I've never heard it called that! The Tennessee localities south of Franklin still have no lotteries, so there is still a lot of traffic along 'lottery row' near the KY/TN border. There is also some reciprocity of commerce between KY and TN; as Franklin is (still) in a dry county, so weekends find a lot of Tennesseans coming North for lotto, while Kentuckians are driving south for booze! However, I have learned my lesson. Never again will I be gouged $20 a case for beer that I can buy for $12 in Bowling Green. It's about the same distance in either direction, so I will choose to save ~$8!
  2. In our first iteration, we were FlashnCache. But since my wife and daughter (sometimes and almost always, respectively) come along on caching adventures, I decided to change our name to the current, Team FnC listing. I guess I felt like it made it more of a family thing that way. Anyway, when I sign the logs I always identify the members that came along - i.e. Dave and Josie of Team FlashnCache, or Dave, Cathy and Josie of T FnC; sometimes it's just plain ol' Dave of T FnC... (Yes, I identify the Team even when I go solo. Gives it that "We're all in this together" feel!) And hey! We just passed 50 finds! Not much of a milestone, but it's our first! Woohoo! Go Team FlashnCache!!!
  3. I only cache alone when I'm going to tackle something beyond the scope of what my usual caching partner (who is six) would be able to handle. Loooong hike, lots of climbing, treacherous/risky areas, etc. I frequently wear a hat, too. But I don't invite any dogs, cats, ferrets, monkeys, llamas, wallabies or naked mole rats...
  4. Four... Wheel... Drive... (Comes with heat - can't beat that!) Accept no substitutes!!!
  5. "Peanut Gallery"?!?!?! LOL I use a Palm IIIxe with Cachemate. Lots of folks will tell you that you should use GSAK to run the conversions as well; but Cachemate comes with a converter (CMConvert) that works perfectly well. I have a feeling I'm gonna get flamed over saying this, but what the heck - my opinion... <edit> hands got ahead of brain...
  6. I don't what it uses for the back end, but it is in the Cachemate folder and is titled "CMConvert"
  7. Those are really cool! I saw them advertised in a commercial the other day. I would think that a big blue bag would be a little too conspicuous for hiding a cache, but they look like they’d be great for camping. Also to organize stuff in a storage area. Or marinating a couple huge hunks of meat, or loads of little ones… I also like Jamie's suggestion for keeping your gear dry during those unplanned water activities! Hmmmm, the possibilities! What store did you see them at? Were they expensive?
  8. In my opinion, a lame micro is one hidden on a light pole in the Wally World parking lot. Or any parking lot, for that matter. I; too, found a few of these when I was just starting out. Then I started thinking, "Why would anyone want me to visit light pole E-6 in front of the Photo Shop?" Of course, maybe the hider worked in that photo shop and just wanted to see people stopping by from time to time. A little sneaky vicarious thrill, I guess. Nothing wrong with that. But the main reason I don't bother with parking lot micros anymore is my caching buddy. She's 6 years old and doesn't care for caches where there aren't little treasures to trade. But we all play the game our own way, so parking lot micros don't bother me. We just don't look for them.
  9. There are several types of "stone" looking paint available on the market today. A trip to your local home improvement store would likely turn up a few. If I recall correctly, they're kind of pricey, though. Neat container, I like it!
  10. <Picture snipped for brevity> This would be kind of neat for a FTF prize. <snip> No doubt! Be kind of hard to haul very far though. (Wouldn't want to hide it, or find it, at a 5/5!) Would give a new meaning to CITO, as well. "Cache in, telescope out!"
  11. I can't really answer those questions, but a resource that you can use while traveling is local public libraries. Most of them have computers that have internet access, so you can look things up while you're in the area. You'll probably want to have a notebook or pad of paper to write cache descriptions, hints, etc in; as most libraries either won't let you print, or charge a 'per page' fee. Hope this helps!
  12. Hey, I hate to interrupt the *very* mature argument that you're all having, but do any of you remember that the OP lives/caches in Minnesota? I think that if you don't live or cache "up north", now would be a good time to save face and bow out. (As a Mod, you're an exception, Bret!) Peace,
  13. From the GeoCaching Disclaimer - Cache seekers assume all risks involved in seeking a cache. That takes you off the hook. If you hide it, there are those who will seek it. (Probably more than you think!) Just be sure you mention any and all special equipment needed to safely seek out the cache. Climbing gear, harness, pitons, spotter, hot-air ballon, submarine... and make sure it's spelled out clearly on your submission! Best of luck to ya!
  14. "I hate that technology seems to be more important than the human experience." Are you overlooking that bit of technology with the coordinates loaded, and the pointer-thingy in it that leads you to the cache? Seems a bit hypocritical when our hobby relies so heavily on technology.
  15. D'oh!!! I guess it pays to read the directions. Thanks, all!
  16. I have a Palm IIIxe that I use for caching, and have Cachemate loaded into it. The question that I have is about other applications that will work with it. I have used GSAK in the past, but have gotten tired of the "nag" screen that comes up after the period of trial use. I freely admit that I'm cheap, and just don't want to pay to register GSAK. Are there other applications for the PC end of things that will interface with Cachemate? (By the way, I'm not looking for a means to upload info into my GPS'r, just want to use my Palm for paperles caching.) Thanks!
  17. I have a Palm IIIxe that I've been using for over a year. Works just fine, and I think I only paid about $25 for it at the time.
  18. No argument here. And, speaking as a former Scout, I can readily see the distinction between the two. (FYI - I had the Orienteering merit badge) Orienteering is different from Geocaching. It takes a bit more skill to use a map and compass (easy now, I know a lot of us use them in addition to the GPS'r) and successfully plan/plot a course with a topo map. Orienteering requires more forethought, in that you need to choose the path of 'least resistance' on your way to the goal. Also, I'm having a little difficulty getting my head around what could or would comprise a reasonable test of skills for a Geocaching Merit Badge. What criteria would a candidate be judged upon? Difficulty level? Would it be (gasp) about the numbers? Practicing CITO would be a given; you would think. What, in your opinion, would be a fair set of requirements to get the badge?
  19. The more rum, the more DNF's. Somehow, I don't think you'd care much, though...
  20. Good idea! I like it. There's a really great sculpture garden in St Louis; can't remember the name right now, but it's well worth a visit. Ah, yes. It just came to me. The Laumeier Sculpture Garden. (Not a shameless plug ) Out on the SW side of St Louis!
  21. Eeeeh... Pigs, dogs; what's the real difference...
  22. Use the "Members" feature at the top of the forum page and search for the individual that you're looking for. Then click on the name, which will take you to their stats page. From there, you have the option to send them an email through GC.com. My apologies if you've already tried this, but it's always best to start easy...
  23. Yep, that would be my guess as well. Though I haven't seen it in a log, it's the thing that makes the most sense. Gotta love cachers, we're such a thoughtful bunch!
  24. Team FlashnCache is on the map! Strange - We live 'just down the road' from CYBret, but have never run into him. Visited a lot of the same caches, though... We're bound to run into each other sooner or later!
  25. A resounding "Yes" from this Hoosier! Love the idea, and as the folks in our area are spooling up for our annual "Covered Bridge Festival", you'll probably get more 'yeas' as this Waymarking business busts open. The fam and I are headed up to the festival on Saturday, I'm going to starting getting coordinates then. (Yes, I realize it's not an 'official' catagory yet, but why wait?)
