  1. A while back I submitted a similar "point of view' cache and it was rejected for insufficient use of GPS (I think that is fairly close to how it was worded). As was explained to me at the time; yes, there are caches of this type, this type of cache was an older type, and no new ones of this type were being allowed due to a rule change. The reviewer suggested that I incorporate a projection step into the setup of the cache. Since part of my goal for the cache was to get visitors to read a historical marker about the POW camp where the cache is located, this approach worked well. The cache is GCA4RCR.
  2. Oh crap , I’m blind. Thanks for pointing this out.
  3. Looking at the souvenir, I got to wondering, where was the background photo taken? Yellowstone maybe?
  4. Kinda off topic but, I remember that webcam at the Alamo. Back years ago, long before geocaching, when I taught Texas History we would occasionally pull that cam up and watch the feed for a few minutes in class just to make sure that the Alamo was still standing and that Ozzy was not sneaking around. My students really enjoyed the diversion. More on topic, I for one wish there were still more webcam caches in the wild to be found, to me they present an interesting challenge. Having said that IMHO, if they are brought back it should be on a limited basis. Again IMO.
  5. We don’t really pay much attention to FPs, except we do like them when we receive them on one of our caches. We don’t usually filter for them when we travel and we have found just about every cache within 30 miles of our home base regardless of the number of FPs it has. In fact we get excited when a new cache publishes near us. At this point, when we feel the need to feed the addiction, we pick a spot relatively close, drive there, find as many caches as we have time for and then drive home, we try to “clean an area out” so to speak. It doesn’t matter the number of FPs. Much of the time when we travel we county cache, grabbing the most convenient and interesting cache on our route, sometimes that is a cache with lots of favorites, sometimes not. One thing that I feel is a negative about displaying FPs is that it causes people to skip newer caches in favor of older caches that have had more time to accumulate FPs, thus missing out at times on some really great caches.
  6. I forgot about rocks, we find a large amount of petrified wood in our general area. It’s possibly one of my favorite rocks, so I pick up a lot when caching in areas where collecting is allowed.
  7. We have found lots of change in parking lots, large amounts of scrap metal that I recycle, a pocket knife, a sledgehammer and a pretty nice pair of binoculars. Like Kunarion, we hve found various cutlery and old soda bottles, the coolest being a Sprite bottle embossed Zion National Park on the bottom.
  8. I got my shirt a couple of days ago. I thought it was pretty cool and am looking forward to wearing it to the next event we attend.
  9. Out of curiosity, has anybody received feedback after completing their assigned caches?
  10. I have encounter my first cache that makes use of a Chirp Wireless Beacon. I have a Garmin eTtrex 30x. I have turned chirp searching on, when I'm at the posted coordinates, the Garmin does not react in any way, what should I be looking for? I can't find any guidance on the web. I'm hoping/asking for help here. Thanks.
  11. My favorites: GC1N0X1 GC519MV Death Valley (California) and Enchanted Rock (Texas) respectively.
  12. The person who is in our area usually writes at least a couple of sentences that are somewhat specific to the cache being logged and then C & P a long list of facts about Texas to the end of each post. As a fellow Texan I understand the urge to brag about our great state, but I was having a hard time wrapping my head around why they would include the list on every log. I have logged my share of TFTC/TFTH logs especially on LPC or power trail caches, but I do try to always write at least a sentence or two that are relevant to the specific cache.
  13. Thanks everybody for educating me on the reason behind the extra long logs I've encountered occasionally. I don't think I'll ever earn the badge, I tend to be succinct. "When I have nothing to say, my lips are sealed"
  14. Condoms, tampons and toothbrushes, in this case all in the same cache. Maybe this was a boy scout cache, you know, be prepared?
  15. Greetings all, Is there a "prize" or something for writing the most words when logging a find? We have a player in our area that includes a long list of facts about Texas on every online log they sign, regardless if the facts have any connection to the cache except it is in Texas. This weekend we logged a cache where the player had written a couple of paragraphs and then a sentence saying "ignore the rest of this log" which was followed by 7-8 paragraphs of gibberish. Just curious if this is an aspect of the game that I've overlooked.
  16. Thanks everybody for your comments. We are not seriously considering taking a weed eater with us when we go caching ( I think it would be a bigger pain to lug around than it was worth), was just curious if others had. Anybody carry what they would consider pretty unique or strange TOTTs? There is an adventure trail in our area where many loggers have referenced using a metal detector.
  17. Does anybody carry a weed eater as a TOTT?
  18. Yes, with no luck. Tried using "geocache" also, no luck. Tried to create a shortcut but as noted all I could come up with was a way to start the app. I have used the widget. I trying to figure out a way to "hey Siri" and have the phone display a map to the nearest app, even better would be if I could then ask for directions to the cache and have Siri direct me to them so that I can drive without having to try to read a map while driving.
  19. Anybody figured out how to phrase a "Hey Siri" query on their iPhone that will identify nearby caches? Something like "Hey Siri, what's the nearest cache?" Thinking this could be helpful while driving solo and spontaneously decide to grab a cache.
  20. Thank you for the link, for some reason the map was not displaying for me earlier.
  21. What happened with the Smokey Bear trackable, did the promotion get cancelled?
