Hay i am only 15 and i found out about them from an earth science teacher. What they are it survey controls at the national level. there are ones that tell you your exact elevation ore your horozontal location. Plus they are all over the place. there is probibly one withen a mile of your house where ever you live. One thing to be aware of is that all of the marks you see might not bge in the national database.

Looks like a fine recovery to me. Now you are ready to find one that is not "PROJECTING 6 INCHES", but rather "6 INCHES BELOW GRADE"! -WR You realy think that they are below grade? Here is one that i have been looking for. there are no whitness posts, no plastic pipe and i have mesured a line from the other mark noted, and i have measured from the RXR tracks, the only thing i didn,t do was dig down. Is this an active track? Rails still there? Watch out for trespass and the RR Police. Yes the tracks are still there but they are used 2 times a year for the Adirondack scienic rxr to go from old forge to saranac lake/lake placid where it runs. aalso the tracks are free to roam on but no motor vechicles. i will go digg a little today.

When you get to the page for the benchmark you will see a "Log this benchmark" right above the disclamer.

If you get one of the descriptions it will tell you all of the marks around it. also for you tech inclined it tells you all of the electronics in the building, what it uses for flotes, and the controls for the flow, and some other odds and ends.

When you look at the lines you will see a darker line every 5 or 10 lines. there should be an elevation number on the darker line. From there you can tell if you are going up or down. also on the maps you can see if there are swamps, thick brush, streams, rivers, and even benchmarks. with the topo program you can put the caches on the maps so you can see where your go when your gps fails(it will happen sometime when you least expect it) also you will have to pay a fine for the rangers to come find you. IN ALL, YOU MUST CARY A MAP AND COMPASS WHEN HIKING FOR A BARE MINIMUM!!!

All of the tracks are there and i measured. But dont you think that the whitness posts and the cap would be there unless it was stolen?

Can any one tell me the pros and cons for palm gps. it would be used for finding your way around roads when driving, and how to get to sertain places. Any recomendations?

I was able to email my state department of the usgs and they where able to mail me a decription of the station that includes all of the marks around it!
