    Fin: Tervehdys

Paitsi... Hyvää kesää! Pecchio
  2. Helsingin mareografi is finally active again. I was able to find yet another good hiding place. I hope that no one finds it - except for the selected few...

  4. And there we go, and we go, think of the green. a vision of our best, it's my record and mine to be, bar 33 a month, second to none. 201, 'tis were no game' a game my game I am.
I hope I'm not geoing too far...

  7. A translation: I have been using Nokia 5140 phone with GPS shell (cover) when searching for caches. Already 12 caches found. Using Route Guidance I can get to a place that is 10 to 25 metres from the cache. After that I use the satellite menu, which gives me an accuracy of 2 metres. This menu shows the coordinates of the present location. And accuracy is that two metres, provided that the signal levels are good. I have a couple of questions about the real GPS receivers. Can you manually type the coordinates into all the devices? Would some device that costs about, say 200 euros, be more useful or more fun than my 5140 GPS phone? And an attempt at answering: Fin: 1) Kyllä tietääkseni kaikkiin nykyään markkinoilla oleviin laitteisiin voi naputella itse haluamansa reittipisteen koordinaatit. 2) Tähän en osaa vastata. Eng: 1) I think that you can mark you own waypoints and type the coordinates into all the GPS devices on the market now. 2) I cannot answer to the second question about usefulness or the differences between phone GPS's and traditional devices.

    Pinned Topics

Could Tahu Nuva or some of his mates please PIN this topic because I think Divine and Mesu have brought up such a good point here that it warrants a place among the pins themselves. Perhaps then it would sooner pass into oblivion and drop completely out of conversation.
  9. Well, not that anyone really gives a Hoover dam, but even the new mpg version is way too sophisticated and advanced for my teletext machine... When I tried the Windows Media player version, the program had to download a whole lot of new modules and dll's and whatnot to even be able to open the show and then all I got was some text and a couple of measly pictures fleeting by. I was able to hear the music though. I'm sorry if I accurately described your video show here... No, really, I'll try to move my tongue off my cheek here. No more sarcasm. The mpg version was opened by Real Player that said that it couldn't play anything without updating some components and then it announced that there really were no updates available so have a radiant day, sir and p**s off. So the mpg version is like complete rubbish as far as my year 1999 state-of-the-art computer is concerned. My point here is NOT that Jarom should bend over backwards to write some kind of AmigaBasic program for poor sods like me, but rather I'm acknowledging the fact that my tools have become so old that they are not cut out for today's demands. I will not go into the argument of whether I honestly agree with myself here... So, I thank you for the show that I was able to see from the cheapest seats in the theatre. I have downloaded both files on my computer to wait for brighter times and some kind of a 3 GHz Windows 2500 power broker to run them... Keep up the good work! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - On niin vanha kone, ettei Jaromin hienot videot toimi. Täytyy välillä näköjään vähän surkutella itseään julkisesti. Siitä vähästä, jonka sain esille Pisa-videosta, vaikutti tosi hyvältä. Oikeasti innostuin menemään kesällä sinne käymään (ja tarkistamaan eTrexini korkeusmittaria). Kiitos myös Shambbulle kätköjen tekemisestä sinne. Kiinnostava kesämatka Nilsiään tiedossa loma-aikana sitten. Jee.
  10. Ah, yet another reason to get a new computer. I have Win98 and I am able to see the show only partially (hear the music, see some texts and some pictures). But from that I can see that the artwork is great and this immediately encourages me to travel to the Pisa mountain next summer. Thanks for that! You've done pioneering work here. - - - - - - - - - - - Kaa, keppolos imea tenne kou serpatima daator. 11. But I do! Not an hour goes by without me really feeling for them - deeply. From the bottom of my (something).
  12. I was promptly heard. Now the site supports the familiar coordinate format of dd.mm.mmm. Maxxy, you might want to try again. It seems the site is a one-man-workshop and the owner is pleased to implement the recommendations from users. And since it's Finnish, you can use Finnish when dealing with the site. So this is another compelling reason why this thread should remain English-only... Luckily I know the language and thus am able to understand myself... *Waves hand to the recent language discussion with these stupid comments*
  13. Maxxy, you are in the right track. Gps-waypoint.net does not support the coordinates that we geocachers use almost exclusively, that is in the format of Degrees, Minutes and the thousands of minutes, or dd.mm.mmm. The coordinates are really WGS-84, but you will have to "convert" them yourself using the setup of your device, or a calculator. This is at the same time both a very small and a colossal pain in the back regarding the justified and unjustified frustration this gives to a well-meaning contributor to their site. I'll send some feedback there about this problem since my opinion of the site is getting better and better. I hope I will be heard, or explained happily away...heh.

    Pinned Topics

I agree as well. It's a good idea.
  15. And after some ranting it seems that the new Finnish site is far better than the old Waypoint.org. So please think some of the criticism in my previous message to consider only Waypoint.org. I really will suspend my opinion on gps-waypoints.net until I have got to know the site a little better. The link to "Kansalaisen Karttapaikka" map service of the waypoints is really superb - and a thing I missed when writing the last post. Thus ends not the fluctuant man's postings on this subject...
  16. This is of course very nice, but the accuracy of the coordinates cannot be guaranteed in any way because of the method the coordinates are gathered: anyone can send wrong coordinates and the possibility of errors is quite strong. After finding a couple of misleading coordinates there arises the question of whether any coordinates in the database can really be trusted at all. I have one personal example of Waypoint.org. I found the following coordinates of Erottaja, Helsinki in Waypoint.org: Helsinki, Erottaja --- Category=Misc Waypoint: N6009.999 E02456.800 Submitted by: xxx Submitted on: 09 May 2002 These are WRONG (they are based on KKJ system, in which they are right) but when I tried to correct them, it was not so easy. After sending a couple of e-mails and corrected coordinates to the site administrator, he published my new coordinates as a second waypoint called Erottaja. There was no way of getting rid of the old coordinates and I got tired of trying. Now I checked the situation after a year had passed and -- the original wrong coords were still there and my correction had disappeared altogether. So anyone looking for Erottaja from Waypoint.org can find only the wrong coords. The first published coordinates seem to take precedence over others at least in Waypoint.org web site. It seems that it is so easy to send any kind of data to these databases but correcting false information is hard and useless work. All in all, in my opinion, these waypoint databases are not reliable and since no one can reasonably verify the information in them, they should not be taken very seriously. They are just a form of entertainment and "general Internet stuff". But I guess they are good for finding the obvious places, like amusement parks or railway stations of large cities, or insignificant spots like the nearest public toilet or hot dog stand when exploring a minor Finnish town... By the way, Erottaja in the Finnish gps-waypoint.net is now correct (WGS-84). Thus ends a pedantic man's contribution to this subject. (added text and edited typos)
  17. Helsingin mareografi There is now a new canister and log book to my Mareografi cache. There is no rat-trap in the old place but it is filled with concrete. The hooligans must have been members of the Mareografi maintenance staff who have fixed the serious hole in the hut's foundations. When inspecting the state of the cabin, they have probably thought the canister just a piece of rubbish. I'm just guessing because I believe that man is inherently good (most of the time). I hope that the new hiding place is at least as safe as the one before, that is, lasting at least the whole of year 2005. If that disappears, the next canister will be placed in a bank vault... Difficulty is going to be ten stars. Hah!
  18. Helsingin mareografi There has been a very small change in the coordinates of the granite pillar by the Helsingin mareografi geocache. My original rounding was incorrect so I now have to publish more precise WGS84 coordinates. The original correct EUREF-FIN coordinates do not change at all. New, more accurate coordinates (WGS84) of the reference point are: North 60° 09.221' East 024° 57.404' The difference to the old, slightly incorrect coordinates is only +0.001 minutes to the north, or approximately two metres away from the sea. I think that this has no practical consequence to the calibrations that have already been made at the pillar because the real accuracy of normal hand-held GPS receivers is between 5 to 15 metres. Pecchio (Edited another miscalculation and the text.)
  19. My cache "Helsingin mareografi", waypoint GCHEB6, is now disabled temporarily. An evil santa claus has been there to rob the good guys´ gifts. The granite pillar stands proud, so you can still calibrate your gadgets, but in the moment there is no log book to be found by the hut. I'm going to replace the canister soon, but I must first find a better hiding place for it. I believe the present has been compromised for good. If I can manage, I'll probably hide two canisters. The first one in the old place with a message "Eat me!" hidden inside a rat-trap and the second (the real one) somewhere near. But I wouldn't do that really - OR WOULD I NOW? Vaffanculo, bastardi.
No, kohta nähdään.)
