  1. I have just emailed a TB owner to remind then that they should not show the TB number on the TAG in photos. When we started TB'ing we did the same mistake and had numbers showing, luckily some one emailed us and brought this to our attention. This happens a lot - could geocaching.com include a note with the tags warning people about this ??? Could this (or another thread) be pinned ti help warn people ???? Could a "note" be put in the TB FAQ ???? Thanks G
  2. I've written my own cache tracking and planning set of programs and have got the UK covered with 9 PQ's (with a fair amount of overlap) - I run 2 plus "Home" daily with the ones nearest to home on Fri/Sat so I know the local ones are the most uptodate ready for the weekend. To have these to come down as one would be great ..... Maybe limit of 1 "big" download daily and keep the 5 to smaller ones. Sue
  3. I too am a happy Garmin V upgrader .. I have two both running at latest version 2.5 .. seems very stable .. IMO go for it I Have done a backward downgrade on my SPIII once as the new code was "unstable".. Garmin dont offer "old version" on the web site - but as I had done a few and keep them I had a copy I was happy with. If I didn't have a downgrade I am sure some one here would have G
  4. Also remember hosting your own web site is usually against the T&Cs of a residential (and some business tariff) DSL service We are lucky we have a Wireless Leased line into the house (what was Tele2, then Liberybroadband, then FirstNet, now owned by Pipex) our T&Cs allow us to run any / all servers / services at home so we run our own web server, SMTP & POP email server etc
  5. FWIW .htaccess is not the best way of doing security on a Apache server - it is cumbersome (requiring a restart every time you change user access) and it slows down the server every access - the reason being is when using .htacess and setting allowoverride All in the httpd.conf file Apache will look in every directory for .htaccess files. I have seen tests suggesting the performance hit is up to 20%. This occurs on all directories/ pages opened whether you actually have a htaccess file - also the .htaccess file is loaded every time a document is requested. .htaccess should only be used if you dont have access to edit the httpd.conf file - which is the case when you dont own the server Best way is to define groups in the password file, and use Directory Directives in the httpd.conf file ie to lock out a directory use something like - this would allow users of group admin and groupa and a user called fred to access this folder # Lock out Directory XXX <Directory path/to/directoryXXX> AuthName "Welcome to the A Passworded Directory - please enter your Username and Password" AuthType Basic AuthUserFile path/to/password/file/htpasswd AuthGroupFile path/tofolder containing group/definitions/groups require group admin groupa require user fred </Directory> In htpasswd you define all the user:password lists, allocate them groups in the groups file see http://httpd.apache.org/docs/howto/htaccess.html#when

  7. Wanting to be in full control we host our own. OK the response can be slow but for the number of hits it's doesn't matter on all but maybe the photo album pages. Also gives us something to do :-) and all we need to pay for is the domain registration. OK OK we admit it's an excuse to play - Apache, MYSQL, PHP does all we need it to. It has a gecaching section getting all the data dynamically from the underlying database. The php part is also used to parse the pocket query gpx files and load into an MS access database for local tracking and off line searching. Sue www.skampsweb.net
  8. Simple answer ..... Dunno We choose our real name .. all thats missing is the S&G expands to Sue & Graeme
  9. I had a Etrex as I travel a lot on Business and I had spent so many evenings wandering strange cities around the world and then struggling to find the Hotel We had both been very avid Scuba divers, involved in a lot of deep mid channel wrecks, this type of diving takes a lot of set up / planning and we had got busier and busier at work so no longer had the time to prep for the dives. As such we had stopped diving and were looking for a new "easier" hobby. We had gone for a few walks around Berkshire and had done the standard buy "a few walks round Berkshire" books, but then we discovered all we where doing was following people around the same walks... Having dived complete unknown wrecks and discovered and lined loads of new cave, this "follow the leader" stuff was boring I had come across GeoCaching.com off the Garmin Web site a few years ago... One Sunday last year when trying to think of somewhere different to go for a walk I suggested to Sue maybe we try GeoCaching, we hit the web site, found 3 in an "area" which where Roman Remains, Roman Coins and Roman Road .. off we went It was great fun - We were Hooked..... Sue, I think, likes hitting the numbers and likes the planning and hitting of multiple caches a day, me I prefer the walk, the sights, the puzzle Caching has appealed to us on a number of levels - walking, puzzles, photography, technology. We have developed our own SW tools to help us collect, collate, plan, mark found all cache data. It reawakened our own personal web page which continues to be "our lifes diary" All in all, its great fun with a great community
  10. well done from us too ... and a belated happy birthday too S&G
  11. We headed to try a FTF a few months ago and we were second to find ... it transpired the FTF'rs where leaving the car park as we arrived ... however courtesy of a Blackberry we logged it first hehe However in our log we did say we where second to find and also ref'd their was other FTF's giving someone else the public FTF recognition - then to make it more fun On the web page there was even a Third to find who posted before the FTF'rs Its all in the fun isn't it ??? Maybe we can make too many rules sometimes ??? example log ... January 2 by Ann_and_Brian (504 found) Hurray - First Finders We were heading past so thought we had better look in here as we thought we had a chance of being FF's. TNLN. 12. If you want to knock up a quick excel spread sheet - Distance between two points is approx (in Km) = 6378 * (ACOS((SIN(Latitude 1)*SIN(Latitude 2))+(COS(Latitude 1)*COS(latitude 1))*COS(longitude 1 - longitude 2))) All Longs and Lats are in Radians To convert a Long/Lat to a Radian = Lat/Long in Decimal notation * 3.14159 / 180
  13. "%$^%$"^ --- you just got me interested in this again. I got upto about 300 and odd a couple of years ago and now have to start again. I'll know I'll be looking for 2 within seconds of going to the car - we havd a 1 The new numbers really stuffed this fun game. Sue
  14. Have a look at This Link FWIW - I have 3 2 * Garmin GPS V (one is North America base map and one is North Atlantic Basemap) 1 * StreetPilot III
  15. In Hyde Park, Green Park , Kensington Gardens and St James Park there are approx 30+ micro caches. The Sherlock caches are also in the same Area as is the Safari Cache (watch out for the last position being closed) Also the Rainbow caches are within walking distance of them as well London has many many caches in the centre areas which can be walked to and would easily fill a 2 day cache run S&G
  16. I guess you could do a few things (1) email the people you think dropped it off and offer assistance in logging / dropping off bugs, then after they catch up, you can grab it (2) do a "grab the bug" from the bug page (go to the bug page, click on add a log entry, pull down menu to "grab from somewhere else"), this puts it in your hands and then I'd log a note into and out of the cache you got it from - this was the bug gets the milage and you keep the bug in your possesion ready to drop it off again I'd also consider emailing the bug owner asking what they would like you to do S&G
  17. Well done from us too - we will be at 200 soon as well
  18. When we found a unofficial bug like this we contacted the "owner" and agreed a joint ownership and added a tag that we had. Sue
