  1. The OP indicates that the download is triggering his Anitvirus software to reject the downloaded file - the suspicion is that it is a "false-positive", but is it? Without further information: when I balance the product of a company that has just gone to fly-by-night status, against a well established computer software company that has been around for 30 years and is widely trusted to keep malware off all sorts of computers, then I generally trust the latter. So the solution here is a two-step process. Note that Symantec is a major software company and addresses many platforms with continual updates of virus information and also with tightening up their procedures to avoid false-positives. So Step 1: force your AV software to do a complete update of both its core software and the data (virus definition files) on your computer. Now try the download again, if this solves the problem then someone reported the issue and it was found to be a false-positive and the adjustment was made by Symantec. If this does not resolve it, then Step 2 is to submit the file itself to the support folks at Symantec (or send them the link and let them pull the file down). If your installed software does not have a mechanisms for this, then you will need to browse the Symantec site to find the link that corresponds to the specific product.
  2. Thanks for this info. I have been having exactly this issue and seeing those images and the remedy is very helpful.
  3. Yes, indeed. I believe I also requested this back in 2004 or 2005 before I realized that... oh, nevermind.
  4. This is contrary to my observation. I am running GSAK (and pushing it pretty hard with macros, API calls, PQs and databases over >15000 records) in Windows 7 in Parallels under OS/X Lion on a MacBook Pro with absolutely no problems.
  5. I also have no use for the recently viewed caches list. Ctrl-H in Firefox serves the users needs in this regard completely; I never use it for this so I am pretty sure I don’t need this feature. Now if, instead, you put a list of my owned caches that need servicing, then I will dislike that just as much, but at least it would be for the common good.
  6. imamachine, in looking at the photo you posted I get the sense that you have better maps than the routing is using. You might want to reload the maps with Mapsource and note that when you do you get the choice to include auto routing information in the map as you send it to the GPSr. If you don’t do that, then you leave the GPSr with no choice but to use the base map and that map won’t have the smaller streets. Also, since you are using GSAK, consider installing this macro: http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=3172 because it generates CustomPOI files that are going to be a much greater joy for you. (You will see a macro in that library by me - don’t use that; ProsperoDK’s version is much better).
  7. I use both a 60CSx and a DeLorme PN40 (the 40 is similar to the 60). I find that the paperless aspect to the PN series is better than on any Garmin device in terms of ability to carry data with me. I have had 40,000 cache descriptions, along with as many logs as I ever want to page through, on the PN and I know that that does not hit the limit. Still that does require a bit of technical knowledge (file swapping inside the GPSr) and most novice users might find that a bit tricky to figure out. The screen size is a bit smaller than what you will be used to coming off the 60cx and personally I never really got used to that (I had hoped that I would); the PN60 is a bit prettier and the display may be a bit better, so you would need to be the judge of that. The street routing on the PN40 does not meet my expectations because those expectations were crafted by the way the 60CSx routes. I still have the 60CSx dashmount in the car and use the Garmin to route me close to the cache. When I leave the car, I take the PN with me to find the cache. That system works quite well with me. My wife is then with me with her own 60CSx and having two different units generate "opinions" on where the cache location might be is very nice. The devices very rarely disagree and when they do it is generally a toss-up as to which unit "is right". I did look into getting a 60 or 60W but ended up not doing that for some personal reasons; but one caution I would toss your way is to inspect very close what the "W" does for you and whether you want the extra costs associated with having that. When I was looking at this it meant also ponying up for some sort of satellite subscriptions service and another device that I did not have a use for. My PN40 does not have maps outside of the North America and none are available to me, either hand crafted or official; so if that is an issue, then look carefully to see if that issue has changed with the PN60.
  8. I would like to add another perspective to this: there are many avid geocachers who are taking on the various DeLorme, County etc challenges. The majority (perhaps all) of the challenges that allow counting puzzle caches allow them to be counted at "the posted coordinates" rather than at the solved coordinates. If the Groundspeak corrected coordinates are implemented in all the data streams as seems to be the future, then the individual users will not be seeing the posted coordinates in the data that they use to demonstrate to the challenge owner that they met the challenge. This will cause considerable confusion as individual cachers will claim to have met a challenge based on their own data, but challenge cache owners will not be seeing it that way. It does seem to me that the gpx data stream needs to contain both the posted and corrected coordinates as well as some indication for each which it is.
  9. The largest SD card that I have been able to use in my 60CSx with the latest firmware is 4 gB. There My 8 gB cards do not work in this unit. I have about 15000 Custom POIs in this unit and that file is only 3.3 mB in size. In other words, these do not require much memory on the sd card. If your SD card in the unit is running out of room then that is most likely due to maps and tracks. One thing you might do is to look at the SD card to see if there are tons of gpx files in the root directory; those are old tracks. If you no longer need these tracks, then you can delete these gpx files to make room. But as was pointed out above, the 1000 waypoint limit is not affected by the SD card.
  10. The Garmin Legend Cx is a discontinued GPSr that connects to the computer through a USB connection which requires a USB driver from Garmin to move waypoint data into the GPSr. This requires drivers to be installed on the computer. Most users who also use Garming software (Mapsources) automatically have these drivers installed. It sounds from the first post in this thread that perhaps the USB drivers are not installed on the computer. For info on this device: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=167&pID=327 Note that this page shows a "Software" link; the USB drivers can be found there. Once these are installed, GSAK should have no trouble loading waypoints into the device. The same is true for the 60CSx GPSr model. The POI issue is a different issue; they can be loaded into the Etrex Legend Cx using a Garmin program called POIloader. But the Custom POIs first have to be crated and that is more complex (I use a GSAK macro for this). They will show up as "Custom Points of Interest" in the Find menu. On my units this item is at the end of the list while the Waypoints and Geocaches items are at the beginning of the list. On both the above mentioned GPSrs it is indeed possible to have the device show up on the computer as a removable drive. But this is not a lot of use except for certain special cases. There is a way to create POI files and put them in the right place, but this is a bit more complex than should be needed, particularly for a novice just getting started. Anyone advising to put a gpx file directly to this removable drive is providing instructions for a much newer version of the Etrex or GPSMAP GPSr and those instructions will not be helpful with either the Etrex Legend Cx or GPSMAP 60CSx.
  11. Perhaps the missing step is that you need to get you Android phone to show up on the computer as a removable drive. This is done as follows: when you connect the USB cable between the phone and the computer, the status line at the top of the screen on the phone will show that a USB connection has been made. Pull the list down so you see the messages and select the message "USB connection". You will see several choices; select the "USB Mass storage" choice. After a few seconds your computer should see the drive. Note that at this time the SD card in the phone is that drive and during the time you have this working, the phone will not see the SD card. Now you find the folder on the computer where the GSAK database is stored that you want to GDAK to see. Copy the entire folder to the GDAK folder on the SD card in the phone. Once this is done, disconnect the removable drive (USB connected phone) or simply use the dialog to change the selection from USB Mass Storage to Charge Only. Now GDAK on the phone should be able to see this database.
  12. In all the years since the removal of Virtuals I have not been able to understand why Groundspeak felt the need to stop them. Now that I see what they thought virtuals were about, I fully understand. How sad.
  13. When I look at logs, I generally want to see the log type and the date next to each other so that it makes a statement: e.g. Found on 10/10/2005 I can get used to most of the cosmetic changes, but I doubt I can get used the to disconnect that we have now with the date on the opposite side of the screen from the log type. Indeed I am glad they are at least back somewhere, but why not make it fully functional. Did it not become clear in the feedback that we use the date heavily?
  14. It seems to me that what we really want is Favorite:Finds; perhaps expressed as percent so 0 would mean "nothing special" and 100 would "everyone who found this has it as a favorite".
  15. The maps - WOW - I am actually speechless. Speed of tiling is great; openstreetmaps are great; I love the way you layer the symbols; etc etc I cannot seem to find anything I don't like.
  16. nope, as there was nothing "mechanical" about it. people are allowed to say that they don't like the bing maps, but when you want to show how you can use the API to use google maps, you can't. I agree with Keystone. Your log might not have been deleted if you had demonstrated both the geocaching.com API and the Opencaching.com API at the same time.
  17. Not sure how this wonderful topic got derailed into a diatribe against LPCs and micros. Let's get back on topic. With regard to the original post in this thread, it seems to me that everyone is misinterpreting this as an affront to geocaches, when it is actually an affront to geocacher behavior. You all must immediately stop acting suspicions when you go searching for caches in Walmart parking lots. Come on, folks, this is really not very hard; you just have to do a little bit of acting: act like a shopper! If that is a problem for you, then try acting like a facilities inspector- the only props you need are your GPSr and a clipboard. Then there is always the act where you use your GPSr as a "pretend" mobile phone to discuss with your spouse (while looking towards the store entrance) to "please hurry up honey cause I gotta go!" If that does not get nosey muggles off your back then you can just tell them you are geocaching.
  18. As for when, the answer is "last night"; and that is how fast a geocaching.com API would be in use if it were ever going to be delivered to us. Go look at the forum thread here regarding the API for geocaching.com; we have been waiting years. This new upstart has it available from day 1. dfx, you clearly have no need for GSAK and have made up your mind about it. Unlike you, 99.99% of geocachers are not professional computer programmers or database managers; GSAK and its macro language is a powerful tool for many of them. I know of no powercacher that does not use GSAK for something. I am hoping that Garmin respects GSAK more than Groundspeak has. Groundspeak’s attitude towards GSAK is just like your’s, dfx. That’s why GSAK is still waiting for direct access to the PQ page where the gpx files that we have run wait to be retrieved. GSAK adapts to geocaching as fast as the users want it, while respecting the listing service. It is already adapting to opencaching. Someone reported an issue with gpx files from OC having trouble; by the time I tested it a few hours later, the problem was gone (probably repaired at OC). I mentioned something about opencaching at the GSAK forum and within minutes an API interface was built into the macro language. GSAK (and other software for filtering) will be even more important with opencaching because that site currently has no filtering process and GSAK makes that very easy.
  19. As to why Garmin would do this: There is only one reason why a publicly traded company does anything: "Return on investment" for the shareholder (a.k.a "Profit" + "increase in value")! Which is "= to money". As for sticking to something they do best: They are! (marketing a high-tech product line) This is not about making you or me happy or somehow teaching Groundspeak something; this is about "access to market". I see them becoming much closer to their geocaching clients (you and me) with this move. We can expect to see them at more of our events. We can expect more GPS toys geared towards geocaching. We can expect entire product lines suddenly becoming aware of how we do things. This is certainly great for the game. As to "will this be for Garmin users only, or for all geocachers?" I’m sure Garmin has noted that many geocachers keep buying new GPSrs every few years. What better way to get access to a customer base than to have them visit your site regularly. Even better if you can deliver new features that the competition can’t touch. While there are clearly tons of glitches at the beta site, it is functional for geocaching. The level of innovation is amazing relative to what we have become accustomed to here.
  20. Given that this months Consumer Reports lists AT&T as the worst network in the US my tip would be get Verizon. Except that my Verizon BB Curve has the GPS unavailable for apps other than the BB maps. Darn nuisance. I will soon be transitioning away from BB for that reason. If you are going to use any of the suggested applications on a Verizon phone, be sure that the GPS is unlocked for non-BB apps.
  21. I'm taking bets on how long it takes for Groundspeak to shut this thread down.
  22. For the fun of it: No. For claiming a record: Yes Not yet. No. Using a time machine to repeatedly come back into the same 24 hour period is also not yet disallowed. The list is finite. The friends that you respect know what the answers are. If it is against the rules and you are claiming a record, then you need to anticipate that those you respect would not respect your claim. Beyond that, it does not really matter as it is "just a game". But some folks are spending a lot of their personal funds playing this game and it does seem to matter to them.
  23. If you are unsure of what geocaching is, then study the links on this page: http://www.geocaching.com/resources/default.aspx specifially Cache Listing Requirements: http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx Just to be clear, what I say is my opinion. Believe it or not.The above resources would lead to the following answers: No. Nothing in the rules says that you have to get out of a car, off a horse, etc. Sleeping while geocaching is not forbidden. But you have to sign the log. If you can do it while sleeping, and can remember it to log it on line, then you are good. Otherwise: "Yes" if you are just geocaching with a fun bunch and run out of energy; "No" if you are claiming a record. Yes, if that gets your message into the log then that is OK. Yes, no law violation is condoned. This is left up to the cache owner. The geocacher needs to be prepared to have the log deleted if her/his signature is missing from the log. This is a reason why moving the cache to another cache location is clearly going to harm other geocachers. Not for plain-old-geocaching. But for claiming a record, I would suggest that someday in the future, doing so might have the same results as in Baseball, Football, Soccer, etc. Ditto for gambling on it... No. That is not allowed if you are going for a record. Even in regular geocaching you should be very cautions before you get so arrogant that you assume the cache is missing just because you cannot find it.
  24. Those who are moving caches, even if authorized by the cache owner, are playing a different game. It is not geocaching because geocaching does not allow moving caches. Cache owners who suggest that moving the object they hid is a normal part of the activity, actually did not hide Traditional caches. Multi caches also do not allow movement of the stages, so it is also not that cache type. At best it would be a puzzle cache with umpteen stages; so the entire series would all count as 1 find if that were the case. So while these are currently posted as traditional caches, they can certainly be part of the game for any geocacher but for those claiming a record of number of finds, it cannot count unless the finder treated each as a legitimate cache type. I note that legoboyjj did not claim that it was a “Geocaching” record, just a “Newest World Record”. Instead of geocaching, it is something else: “speedcaching”,”Powercaching”, “containering”, “picking-up-litter”, etc. Awesome feat indeed. I am mildly interested in what the geocaching record is, and that seems to have become clouded a bit by this thread. So given that doing it by moving caches is not geocaching, what is the record for most number of found geocaches in a one day? I saw a list of the progression of records as they were broken; can someone post a list where each find count has those "Finds" subtracted where the geocaching rules were not followed? I personally think it is fine for folks to play the game any way they want, but for claiming a record, you have to follow every rule to the letter.
  25. You obviously have not been around these forums much. Some would, just to rack up the numbers.
