  1. SW version 3 has WAAS support(gives better accuracy, someone post a better description, please ), I believe Happy caching Jeff
  2. Not eagle yet... Still working on it Star scout, SPL of Troop 521, Londonderry, NH, Daniel Webster Council Ordeal member of Passaconaway Lodge #220 I'm still trying to convince people that a.) there should be a geocaching merit badge and b.) it should be eagle-required!! "May the great scoutmaster of all scouts be with us until we meet again" Happy Caching Jeff
  3. I think that you're suggesting something kind of like a cache of mine: Londonderry Recreational Areas Tour The difference is that my tour-cache doesn't have the added "flair" of starting at a visitor's center with tour books... it's just waypoints leading up to the final, but there's a point in every publicly-owned recreational area in town As you can see by the logs, many have found mine worthy of doing Happy Caching Jeff
  4. I got some pet frogs as a birthday present *MANY* moons ago... They're still alive, although they're above the average age, so they may croak soon Anyhow, I'll get to the point: The frog food comes in nice little screw-top containers, about the diameter of a film canister, about 1 1/2 times as tall... After peeling off the label, and wrapping with duct tape, writing the cache name on the duct tape, and then sealing the label with clear packing tape, it is quite difficult to find in a stone wall... Blends in beautifully! I've used two so far, neither one has had any moisture problems... I've had a few people email me for extra hints though! Happy Caching Jeff
  5. Well, I've found caches, mostly I've found a grand total of $5.46 while searching for caches - a $5 bill once, and the rest was assorted pennies and nickels elsewhere... Happy Caching Jeff
  6. The thing about the powerbar in the ammobox was that it was well-sealed (both factory-sealed and ziplock sealed, on top of the ammobox), and it was in a metal ammobox, not just plastic tupperware. If there are squirrels that can chew through metal ammoboxes, we're all toast! I'm not necessarily supporting food in caches, I'm just pointing out that if food does end up in a cache, it's better off in an ammobox than tupperware... Happy Caching Jeff
  7. Hey! That's my line! Therefore: Ditto! Happy caching Jeff
  8. uhh... I'm about 5'7 or meybe 5'8, weight is hovering at about 116-117 lbs Yep, I'm skinny (Skin, muscle, and bone, as I like to say ) Happy caching Jeff
  9. 16... (and I thought *I* was old... NOT!!) Happy Caching Jeff
  10. After zooming in to 400% in Photoshop, one can see it is a Rino by the dual antennas Happy caching Jeff Edit: fudgy fingers
  11. I've got a whopping 25 finds over two and a half years... "I make geocaching a part of my life, not the focus" - Brian, you hit the nail on the head with that one! I've found all but 3 of my finds by bike, and as Londonderry, NH isn't as cache-dense as some other areas, it does take some time to get to each cache... Homework/School usually ends up as #1, Boy Scouts as #2, and Caching as #3... As a result, I might have as much as 24 hours a *month* to go caching in... factor in the weather, because my parents don't like it when I ride during snowstorms or when it's raining, or otherwise crappy, and I might get about 3-5 hours a month for caching, although more during the summer, because there's no school :D There's the solution: Skip school and go caching!! (Then get back and browse the "GPS and Education" forum for a likely excuse!!!! )
  12. I think I should get it because I need a good excuse to start a collection and I have no real good reason to have it and I've found 88% of all of my cache finds on bike, and I'm a poor broke high school sophomore and tomorrow is the last day of April vacation for me and I've got some standardized testing on Tuesday and Wednesday and I need a new road bike and I just got a new backpack and I like free stuff and I can ramble forever and people say I have ADD but I don't th I need a new computer and I can get a parts to build a new computer for only $88 after rebates but the rebates expire today and that makes me sad because I don't have enough money to go buy the stuff today so I'm stuck using my good ol' Pentium 2 with 300 Mhz clock speed with 320 meg RAM and a 160 gig hard drive and it's really slow and people say I'm a slow learner and I don't think so, I'm just special and I have the amazing capability to ramble forever and BS even more and I'm a Boy Scout and I'm the Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 521 in Londonderry, NH, and I'm an Order of the Arrow Ordeal Member, and I'm going to be an Elangomat at the Fall Weekend this fall and I'm going to Philmont this summer and I'm doing a charity bike ride on May 20th through 21st and I need to raise more money and I'm going to give my past, present, and future English teachers a heart attack if they ever read this runon sentence, so I'll stop now. Geocoin....Please??? Not bad... 1 sentence, 291 words, 1124 characters Yep, that'd give ANY English teacher a heart attack (at least, if I handed it in as part of an essay ) Happy Caching Jeff
  13. Only if this ivory billed woodpecker is going to China Oh I see, so it's ok to have a thread about birdwatching because there are caches in the area but it's not ok to have a thread about going to China and finding some caches while there. Sorry, Sax, you're fighting a losing battle... Oh, that poor bird! I hope it survives! Let's all get together and hold a candlelight vigil while wearing the t-shirts we bought to raise money Happy caching Jeff
  14. Only if this ivory billed woodpecker is going to China Happy caching Jeff
  15. Riddlers (and anyone else in the same boat): The cable for your legend will work with your etrex basic yellow... 300 caches by just using the numbers... HOLY COW!!!! Good Job!! To anyone: I'd be glad to answer any questions you might have about the etrex.. PM me or send me an email (uber.bike.geek@gmail.com) Happy Caching Jeff
  16. I've had a 40 lb daypack on quite a few occasions... I've hit 60 for single-overnight backpacking trips... Pretty good, seeing as I had no trouble with the weight, and I only weigh about 115lbs (yeah, I know it was WAAAY over the recommended weight limit of 1/3 your body weight...Whoops ) Happy Caching Jeff
  17. No kidding! Why was this repeat topic started? Anyone want to offer up a markwell or two and shut this poor, tired old topic down?? Sorry, I just HAD to put in my $0.02 (USD)! Happy Caching Jeff
  18. ::Anti-Angst Preventative Measure:: Ditto... If I want to trade something with someone, I either a.) trade it to/from a cache, or b.) meet said person in person more on-topic-like... Ditto. I've been in many leadership positions, and many people have come up to me saying "Johnny did this!! Get him in trouble!!" or something along those lines. The best method I've come up with to deal with a situation like that is to make an announcement along the lines of "I've heard reports of % happening. It should stop, I don't want to hear about it again." That works 90% of the time, without mentioning any names. When people start naming specific people, you get at least 2 mad parties, the person who did % and the person who says who did %. Not a pretty situation, trust me! If someone wants to start a finger pointing game, they should remember that one finger is pointing at the "enemy" and three fingers are pointing back at themselves. Happy Caching Jeff
  19. I would say no, some kids go caching alone/with friends (although I'd hope that they're old enough and that they've got enough sense to know what their parents will let them have (or not)...) and if they come home with CDs with explicit lyrics and their parents don't like it, nasty rumors about geocaching might start to spread... Also... unless you have permission, you shouldn't be burning mix CDs (especially for distribution) Just my $0.02 (USD) Happy Caching Jeff
  20. boohiss mopeds! Get a real bike Oh crud, I just posted my name here... At least I don't have an avatar Happy Caching Jeff
  21. Here are a couple of links to audio clips of Spring Peepers (frogs!) peeping: peepers (Real Player audio) peepers (mp3) Frogs do not peep. Ribbit-ribbit. Ok, time for my $0.02(USD).... Frogs ribbit, Peepers peep. So there. Happy Caching Jeff Ribbit-peep
  22. I use my Camelbak at least 5x a week, monthly cleanings do fine most of the time... I clean it more during the winter (because I blow air back into the tube to prevent freezing, so my slobber and accompanying bacteria gets blown back in too, and then starts growing in the tube... lovely thought ), but during the summer, I've gone for as much as 3 months without cleaning it (technically - I did mix in some lemon juice after the first month and a half or so... that was about as much time as I had to clean it) I'll generally clean my bladder by mixing about a teaspoon of bleach in with about 1/2 bladder-full of water ad swizzle that around and drain it through the tube, and then rinse the whole shebang out about 4 times I suggest most people clean their bladders more frequently than I... Happy Caching Jeff
  23. I've got a Camelbak HAWG, and I love it - It's designed as a mountain bike pack, which fits me well, as I do most of my caching with my mountain bike... It's got room for a layer or two, depending on their size, lunch, tools, spare tube, cache swag, and a 100 oz.(~3 liter) bladder... I've also got the "Comm Pocket" that holds an eTrex very nicely (Oh yeah, it holds cell phones and two-way radios fairly well too, but I'd never imagine it was designed for that, it fits the eTrex so well ) The HAWG also comes with a shutoff valve in addition to the "bite valve"... good thing, because I've found that the bite valve slowly starts to leak as it gets older and more worn I've also got an EMS 3000PL(nice pack, too!), it's a few years old, it came with a Platypus 2 liter bladder, I don't like it as much, its too "crinkly" - it's fairly stiff, so there's one spot on the bottom (top?) that flexes whenever you empty/fill the bladder, there's a small hole that is developing - the bladder is triple lamiate or something, the outside layer already has a hole worn through it, the middle layer is getting a hole worn into it, and, so far, the inner layer is still fine I haven't noticed a plastic taste in the new Camelbak bladders - A few years ago, they did taste pretty bad, but they're much better now For what it's worth: Performance has the HAWG on sale The Camelbaks generally cost a bit more, but IMO, they're worth it, I've yet to have a problem with mine, and my sister's Girl Scout canoe team has been using Camelbaks for many years, they've also had no problems... FYI - I'm not a sales rep for Camelbak, as much as it may sound it... Happy Caching Jeff
  24. For this and other software please see http://www.geocaching.com/waypoints/default.aspx Watcher requires you to be a premium member though (It uses PQ's), and BigFurryMonster isn't a PM... Have you tried something like EasyGPS? Happy Caching Jeff
