  1. BAH! I was planning to visit Sterling Forest (in early spring) to request geocache placement permission. We have to drag these guys out to try it. Do you think there's any chance they can be swayed or was it an adamant "NO WAY, not going to happen"? I was going to prepare a case for geocaching in Sterling Forest with cache examples, documentation, copies of the NYS permit application I used for Harriman State Park (with their rules, etc). Do you think this would be a colossal waste of time? Bill It might be a big waste of time, but it also might be just what is needed to get the ball rolling in there. Let them know that we mean the park no harm.
  2. If you use GSAK you can make a waypoint for the sign, use it as the center point and it will list all the caches in the database by distance from that waypoint.
  3. They apparently still haven't worked out all the kinks in this promotion. I've got three souvenirs from states I've never been to. All from traveling caches. Hopefully they'll get it together.
  4. I'll get this added to the list we keep for traveling and armchair caches, all of which are excluded for determination of distance statistics. If you hear of others, please note them here so that we can add them, too. Thanks! Could you add this one to the list? It's showing as my furthest north and west caches but I've never cached in Wisconsin: Going to a Mets Game Moving cache
  5. You can always leave the ones you couldn't find for another time. Try a few regular sized caches. The ones with a lot of finds and the fewest DNF logs. After a few finds, go back and try the cemetery caches again. Welcome to the game and Happy New Year.
  6. 42 so far on my favorite Favorite: The Spot
  7. It's kind of like golf. You're not playing against anyone, you're playing against the course. What score you keep is up to you.
  8. It's also to prevent people with spotty reception from getting hit by a train. There are a lot of children in this game, as well as people who walk blindly to wherever the gps is pointing while searching for a cache. I don't understand why you are not in the least concerned about safety here.
  9. Try this site, it helped through this learning curve. HTML for your cache page
  10. 589 total for the 6 day hunt. That's sad to hear but supposedly it's better for the species as a whole to thin the herd now and then. I know that most of the bear encounters I've experienced were in the last couple of years. Didn't see any in my first three or so years of hiking in NNJ.
  11. Someone who would be out geocaching while everyone else is in here talking about it. Maybe there should be a thread about 'power forum posting'.
  12. I like the retroactive aspect, every time I look I have more.
  13. John Boyd Thacher State Park is pretty impressive. Not too far from Albany. Heldeberg 1 I can't remember which cache but look for the Indian Trail.
  14. There's one in dElAWare
  15. Just remove it and archive the listing. The active cache has been in need of maintenance since 2008.
  16. Strange, I didn't start that topic, I just replied to Packs thread.
  17. They might be more frequent but rarely aggressive. I'm up to about ten bear encounters and all but once the bear wanted to be anywhere but where I was. The one time it took the bear longer to leave the area was because her cub was still hiding in a tree near where I was standing. I didn't know that until I walked far enough away for it to drop out of the tree and run the other way. They seem to act like any other animal in the woods, smart enough to stay away from people. ...so far from my experiences anyway.
  18. Just about anything you'd need to do with a waypoint can be done with GSAK - Geocaching Swiss Army Knife. I've been using it for years and am still discovering things it can do. They have a forum and tutorials on their website. GSAK You will need other mapping software in order to create the maps.
  19. Harry mentioned Worthington, No Hints Bridges the Gap seemed pretty remote. 1.3 miles to the next cache should qualify it. Excellent scenery the whole way too.
  20. Davidson cache is an awesome hike from the Ramapo lot. This time of year with the leaves changing makes it that much better. As for 'Middle'aNowhere' (Team Magsters caches), I'd think twice before attempting one of theirs, they quit the game a few years and have apparently decided to abandon their caches.
