One of those things on my list of to do's - which kept getting longer today. I'm dinking around with it, but don't feel as if I have the eye for graphics that some have. Others are taking a stab at this as well, which may mean we can offer up a couple of options. "Where shall the world be found, where will the word resound? 2. quote:What no KiwiMonster cache's listed None selected yet by other cachers, though I'm positive they will be. Maybe you can choose the first. "Where shall the world be found, where will the word resound? Not here, there is not enough silence." - T.S. Eliot
  3. quote:First off, eventually you will have lots of eastside and westside caches. This will make the table too long. You would have to scroll way down or up for the other side For right now the table is set up to only display the top two vote getters in each category. I have thought that this number is too small, but at the same time didn't feel that an exhaustive list was totally necessary for a visitor or a new player. They are only going to have time for so many caches, or may want to do the "best" before deciding they want to become seriously addicted. I was going to create another table that listed all the votes made for those interested, but was wrestling through somme of the problems that you are noting. I like your suggestions though, and may incorporate them into that "exhaustive" table. "Where shall the world be found, where will the word resound? Not here, there is not enough silence." - T.S. 4. quote:noticed the eastside and westside labels are reversed DOH! You are right! What a stupid mistake, but easily fixed. Thanks. "Where shall the world be found, where will the word resound? Not here, there is not enough silence." - T.S. Eliot
  5. About a year ago (when the famous Moun10bike and Seth! were coming to town), oregone had a great idea about putting together a welcome to Portland cache that would have maps, lodging and dining info, and suggestions on local cache favorites available for visitors to our city. Some practicalities got in the way of placing it, but conversation also veered into suggestions of putting together a welcome to Portland geocaching page - something that I have off and on been encouraging and vaguely referring to as in the works for at least a year. Well, most of the work is done, and I hope that this will get the ball rolling. www.pdxgeocaching.com is that welcome to Portland type site. It has been fun working on this. I've increased my html skills (really just a hobby), taught myself a little php and mysql, and stayed up way to late, to many nights out of the week (like I used to do when I first started caching). Anyway, take a look, offer suggestions, send your negative criticism elsewhere (constructive criticism is greatly appreciated), and cast a few votes for your favorite caches. I plan to add a regional forum sometime in the next week (I mean we Portland people really do dominate the NW forum), and somewhere down the road expand the cache lists to include stuff in the gorge. I hope to keep up on upcoming events so that they can be easily referenced (need to add something about a nipple), and I'm sure there is more to come. A HUGE thanks to fractal for his help with the graphics, bazzle for his encouragement with the programming side, and oregone for his input on the pubs - the guy is like one of those travel book editors, but different. 6. Something I just noticed - in the old forums I could follow the posts of individual people using the pop-it feature. Is there a way to do this now. I used to like reading the posts of various people in the daily email digest that I receive.
  7. Certainly lots to see along the OR coast, and the Redwoods in N. California, but I might suggest pushing inland in Oregon to see Crater Lake. It's good to see that your route avoids L.A. by and large - nothing good to see down there.
  8. I think all the really good ones have been mentioned, and I agree that you need to get out to the Gorge (40 minutes east of Portland) for some really spectacular caches. Don't pass up the un-original cache, and boast that you were at the place where it all began. This thread sadly reminds me that I've got to finish that Portland Geocaching page I've been working on. Anyone here know enough about PHP and mySQL to help me through the last little bit? It's real close.
  9. mopar's comment will work. I have a 315 that originally only displayed .01 mile like yours. Just go to the Magellan webpage, and download the latest software patch for the 315 - version 3.15 I believe. Upload that file into your GPS per the instructions (hopefully you have a cable to sync your gps with your computer), and it should display in feet. You can tell what software version your 315 is running, on the screen that flashes briefly after you turn it on and hit enter.
  10. quote:Sounds like you, too, are being munched by this problem Could this issue also cause difficulties in uploading the data into a mysql table?
  11. quote: If you look at the cache pages using a browser on your computer, do the caches show up? To answer your question a little more directly ... Again, I was using the online version of spinner, and just checked the html through my browser. The cache pages don't show up there either. They do apparently show up in the spun gpx file, but not in the html. I did notice that as it began to spin the file the following type of stuff showed up - "Data outside latin1 range (pos=17942, ch=U+201c) at (eval 3) line 225. Data outside latin1 range (pos=17947, ch=U+201d)" There was lines and lines of this stuff before you got down to GPXSPinner title. Hope that helps explain things a little bit more.
  12. quote: I'm guessing its a problem with Plucker, since its notorious for choking on bad HTML. It could be because I was using the web version of spinner. (Though I'm just guessing, and hardly qualify in any technical sense to know why something works and doesn't work). I don't know if you remember, but a few months back when the new version came out, I had trouble getting it to work on my computer. It would lock up right after it had parsed the file. I just gave up rather than trying to figure out why, and kept using what worked. I reloaded the new version today, and my system didn't lock up, and everything came out as it should. And now that it is working, let me say again how much I love spinner, and the ability to cache without all that paper.
  13. Actually, I think I've found the problem. The caches seem to be getting dropped as I run them through Spinner. When I look at the original GPX file in Wathcer the caches show up. I can't open the file created by Spinner in Watcher, and will need to upload the spun GPX file into my GPS when I get home. They are definitely not showing up in the PDA though.
  14. The caches are there, and have not been archived. Certainly they can be found manually, but I like to load all the pages into my PDA and my GPS at the beginning of the week, and right before the weekend. This way, I simply go when I want, without having to sit down at the computer and wade through cache pages and print outs. Since I've been doing this, I spend less and less time in front of the computer on the web page. I really only get on any more to log finds, and check the local forum threads. It would be nice therefore to see all these new caches in my pocket query where they should be anyway.
  15. I have a query set up for the caches in my area, with its center at my home coordinates to be delivered twice a week. I am regularly getting these, but have noticed over the last week, that there are caches not showing up in this query. I know that it works out from the starting point, and then stops when it reaches the limit you've set - 425 for me. The caches not showing up are all the closest to my home. They are all relatively new, placed within the last two to three weeks. Any reason why these are not showing up?
  16. quote:I've seen the recommendations for this both here and on another forum. I'm just about convinced to drive down to do this one, on the merits of ES & EGH's glowing reviews. Can you two tell us anything more about it? What's so good -- views? the hike? the cache itself? Cin From a cacher down south, who occassionally 'reads your mail' . . . . Definitely, a wonderful and unique cache. It would be a shame to give it away, but it's strength is in the hike and the views. The Columbian River Gorge itself is worth the trip anyway. Hope you will come down our way for some great caches. Evergreenhiker mentioned some others worth seeing as well - Quarry View, and Gorgeous. If you want some other recommendations, let me know. I tend to enjoy the caches that make me work for them, and many of the more fantastic ones require a 'typical' gorge hike where you are gaining a lot of elevation in a short distance. Some of these off the top of my head are Hardy and Rock of Ages. Another I enjoyed was Memaloose Island View.

    Ape Caves?

I think the cache Soup is referencing is this one which was placed by joedohn (arguably one of the best cache placers before he archived everything). Someone else has already referenced Mountain Marsh which is one of the oldest caches in existence - definitely the oldest in Washington. Evergreen hiker was kind enough to reference my cache which seems to get a hit once every 200 days or so, and so I don't think I have much more to add. Seth! has a cache this way as well -Bigfoot - which was enjoyable. And the really adventurous could go for Eraseek's cache Above the Clouds. All in all it is beautiful country. The cave is great, and I would definitely do the upper portion - just plan on some rock scrambling. You can get some info here on the caves. As of March 25 the trail to Wading for June was open to cross country skiing. I would assume there is still snow up there, but it is probably patchy in places. When are you planning on coming? How long will you be in the area. I need to get up there and check on my cache anyway.
  18. It's too bad that joedohn pulled all of his caches and disappeared into the void, but we had a great time hunting hisCorps of Discovery cache a few years back. It would make a great day trip out on the coast if people still wanted to do it, and maybe someone will just reproduce it as another cache.
  19. quote: Just out of curiosity, what happens if you temporarily remove all the files from the 'templates' folder? It should throw up a couple of error messages about not finding the templates, but it shouldn't crash. If it is throwing up a couple of error messages, I'm not seeing it in time, because I still get the Blue Screen of death. I updated to the new version, and in both attempts to use it crashed. In the first attempt it did create a new spun gpx file, and in the second it just laughed at me in a blue sort of way.
  20. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I cannot get the stand alone version to work at all on my computer. In fact everytime I use spinner 2 my computer locks up and crashes hard. It will parse the caches in the file, but when it goes to write it out along with the html code, it freezes. The last time I tried, it finished parsing, and then rebooted my computer. Any thoughts?
  21. Another noted bug. . . I noted when the new forums were up that I needed to reset my notification (mypop) preferences. No big deal. I tend to have everything come to me in a daily email digest, but I am now getting two reports. One seems to be apparently from the old forums, and shows no posts. The other is just as it has always been. No big deal, I just delete the bad one and read away, but I wondered if it was just extra work that the servers were doing. All in all I don't find the changes frustrating or bothersome, and have to simply say thanks again for all your hard work.
  22. I don't know if this is true in all the individual topics (this one seems to be ok), but I noticed in reading the topic in the general forum about caches in designated wilderness areas that the posts are all out of order. There is the original post, and then one from worldtraveler from today, but from there things get weird (Reading responses before other statements were made). Also the post by worldtraveler appeared again at the very end. Also, I noticed that sometimes when I hit the back button (IE 6) that the previous pages lose their formatting, and become a little jumbly and difficult to read.
  23. Great! Thanks for any help you can give.
  24. Since you will be celebrating your nuptials (that's kind of a fun word to say - nuptials), you might want to do this one, and reminisce.
