  1. Hey Team Kilroy, the Blues Mobile is right behind you! I have another TB - not a racer - in Utah and put out the call for her to come home to AZ a long time ago. Let's hope our racers make it out of that state faster than Talky Tina has! Drive safe, everyone!
  2. WOO HOO!! Our Blues Mobile was just logged into a cache in Nevada!! I was finally changing instructions on the racers' pages (west to east) and the log happened while I was making the changes! I haven't been able to keep up with this too much until today - chemotherapy had me tired & foggy when the racers finally took off from the starting line - but I'm feeling fabulous today! The site seems to be really busy right now, but I am not sure that the link I have posted for the Cannonball Run webpage on my racers' pages is working right. When I clicked on it, it took me to a "not found" page. How can I change this to take people to the right page? Thanks much and have fun everyone!!
  3. Yay!! dwgogo and the screamer will be entering again this year, hopefully with better luck than last year. The Screamin' Gogomobile is still stalled in Ohio - apparantly on someone's computer. Oh well, he must have decided to stop screamin' and move in for awhile. I'm on my way to order new tb tags now. I hope more bugs make it into Arizona this year. We promise - we will be helpful no matter who makes it into town! Will the racers ever know where the finish line is? I'm assuming it will be somewhere on the west coast. I guess the info we can send with the bugs can say that they are racing to the west coast? Once again, many thanks to the organizers for another fun event!!
  4. Hey Planet, that's great news!! I hope my Screamin' Gogomobile shows up somewhere. He was picked up by someone June 13 who either never placed him or lost him. I've emailed the person twice, but alas, no response. You have given me hope again! Yay!! dwgogo [This message was edited by dwgogo on September 13, 2003 at 09:33 AM.]
  5. Great idea! I like how bugs would be starting from all over the country instead of one place. I agree with Eric that it could take a long time for a bug to actually make it to all 48 or 50 states. Another idea - what about a time limit and the bug that makes it to the most states is the winner? Say 6 months or a year? I guess you could end up with a lot of bugs tied for first place, etc., but if you were tracking miles & most caches visited & any other criteria, you could come up with a winner.....Bug A visited 25 states, travelled 4,000 miles & was logged into 50 caches, Bug B visited 25 states, travelled 3,000 miles & was logged into 32 caches. A tracking nightmare perhaps, but then there would be a definite ending to the race. Just food for thought - I will definitely enter if the race gets going....
  6. YAY!!! I hope he makes it to beautiful, sunny & warm Arizona!! What better place to get away from the snow & cold - thousands do it every year regularly. Of course, it will be like a sauna here pretty soon - he better get a move on. From a rusty quilter......
  7. Hey strikeforce - you could bring the Screamin' Gogomobile with you, logging caches in each state of course and travel through his hometown of Sedona, AZ on your mission. Sounds like we could use someone with your investigative abilities out here in the wild west! Oh, bring the RumRunner too. We could sip a few rum & cokes when you get here!
  8. One of those bugs is mine, Screamin' Gogomobile, and he was logged into Coonass # 1 in PA on March 15 by SueShe. They ran into D1scouter at the cache while logging the bug and D1scouter grabbed it and moved it on to A Restful Stop in Ohio where strikeforce picked it up on March 28. I hope this meets the rules of the race. This also applies to RenoRumRunner - they have been travelling together since the start date and have become pretty good friends!
  9. Thank you, strikeforce! We appreciate the info and glad to hear that good ole SG will be gogoin' down the highway soon! It must have been quite trying listening to the constant screaming!! I keep trying to tell him that patience is a virtue - one of these days...... I'm sure the rumrunner kept him happy with refreshments, though, so maybe the scream was more like a low hum???? That song about the bottles of beer on the wall gets old after a while doesn't it? Here's to great weather!!
  10. It looks great - I am watching it already and looking forward to seeing how it progresses. I hope it makes it to my vicinity!
  11. What a great idea! When someone does their good deed they could share their story on the travel bug page, maybe with pictures of the event, etc. In the spirit of "Pay it Forward" maybe the finder could pass the coin(s) that he/she took from the bug to someone else after the mission was completed? Or maybe add any foreign coins they might have to the travel bug? This will be an interesting bug to watch, for sure. Let me know if you do it!
  12. The Screamin' Gogomobile has been kidnapped by a "Cannonball Cop" and is now being held somewhere back in Buffalo! I sure hope SG doesn't end up in "jail" for the rest of eternity! He also grabbed RenoRumRunner - we were both idling in Ohio for a couple of weeks and were tied for third place for a short time. Anyone else been pulled over by this rogue cop???
  13. quote:Here is a breakdown of where the Racers are fromCA-17 NJ-1 CT-1 NM-1 FL-2 NV-1 HI-1 NY-16 IL-2 OH-1 IW-1 PA-3 KS-1 SC-1 KY-1 TN-2 MA-3 TX-1 MI-1 UT-1 NB-1 VA-7 NC-1 WA-3 Hope the state codes are right, but you should be able to figure it out. The mid-west has a pretty poor showing, hope we help better than we enter. The Screamin' Gogomobile is from the (mostly) sunny state of AZ. Screamin' through a state near you real soon!
  14. Thanks everyone for getting the race off to what sounds like a fun start! And thanks Egnix for the map and everyone who is working so hard on the web page, and especially you Brogan for putting everything together! Now if my bug will just show up somewhere - hopefully going the right direction!
  15. Ken, did you meet with anyone at the DVRAC? I hope it went well if you did.
  16. You have my $10 - sent via PayPal. Thanks for doing this!! Debbie
  17. I just visited the Rock Art Center site and learned from the Volunteer page that the "staff" is predominantly graduate and work-study students from ASU. Because these students graduate and leave, there is a high staff turn-over in the fall "(partial or full)" and they rely heavily on volunteers to "fill in the gaps." In their words, "This creates some unique challenges for programming." Staff turn-over also can cause much added stress to the those who remain. The staff person who handled this from the DVRAC is possibly a student who tried to do the right thing in protecting this archeological site, reacted in an over-zealous manner, and still has much to learn about diplomacy and handling challenges as they arise. The site also has detailed directions and hours of operation which is available for the world to see. I agree with the previous posts in that a virtual cache webpage is the same thing, and could actually be quite helpful to their mission. It appears from the mission statement that they have many objectives including preservation (first priority), providing public access, and education - a vastly important mission with many components including educating the public. I currently work for a non-profit and know first-hand that the mission statement is extremely important in that it provides the necessary focus and vision for the organization. It is very easy for an organization to become so diverse in its programming that it becomes difficult to manage - especially with a small staff that continues to change. Maybe the DVRAC needs to re-focus and decide how much public access do they really want to provide and what is the best way to administer that access. Part of the page concerning volunteering says, "For our part, the staff of the Deer Valley Rock Art Center strives to create a positive and friendly environment in which volunteers will want to work. Currently we are developing a training program to foster a sense of wonder and excitement that volunteers can impart to visitors. As a fairly new institution, we are still figuring out the best ways to run the Center and its various programs. Everyone in the Center is learning constantly, staff included! We hope you will come be a part of the Center's future." They are still finding their way, and appear to want to share this special place with "wonder and excitement". I think some open communication between the cache owner and the Center's Director would clear up this misunderstanding. WhereRWee - maybe you could make an appointment with him? Sometimes there is just no substitute for talking in person - email can be so impersonal and easily misconstrued. You never know - he might decide that geocaching is exactly what the doctor ordered! He also may decide to fence the boulder in question or put up a sign saying "don't touch" or a sign saying it's OK to touch this one as it was fabricated by one of the volunteers (it looked to me like that is how they provide the "hands-on" part of the museum). Truly, if people are not supposed to touch it he needs to know that it's confusing to the public and should be taken care of ASAP. Sometimes the people in charge just don't know until someone tells them. Just my .02 and sorry if this has gone long - I was really irritated when I first read this! But after visiting the site and reading about the staffing - well, I think there is the possibility for a peaceful and equitable solution.
  18. I just read through all the posts - every one of them on every page - and not once did I see a rule that says you can't touch another racer. Quite the contrary - it is definitely in the spirit of the Cannonball Run. Read Brogan's very first posting announcing the race. Though there was much discussion as to whether this would be fair or not, I never saw that the rules changed. Hopefully no one would trash someone else's bug, but "shenanigans" are expected. Did I miss something?

  21. I bought my gps after my sister emailed me with the link to geocaching.com. She was visiting a friend in San Diego who was into it, thought it sounded like fun and that I would like it. She was right! I read the forums for about 4 months before deciding to buy the brand new Meridian Gold. I also use it for hiking, which I do more now because of this sport. I like to see how many miles I've gone and at what speed I'm moving as well as marking great spots to come back to. Also like the tracking feature - it's good to know you can always backtrack! I don't get out as much as I would like as my job keeps me really busy, but I have become much more active and inclined to get out of the house because of geocaching. dwgogo
