  1. quote:Originally posted by LongDogs:I have to agree, that one is really starting to take shape and looks pretty good. The only thing I'd change is I think I'd rather it just say "geocaching" than "geocaching commumity". I like this logo too. You can change the text to "geocaching" but once Jeremy gets that word approved as a trademark (not sure if it isn't already), wouldn't it also have to be removed? Would it still have to be removed if it remains as "Geocaching Community"? May I also make a suggestion to Gustaf - change the font to a sans-serif font as it is easier to see when small. People will want to reproduce the logo both big and small. So a high-res version would be useful too. Groover
  2. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish:Just a thought, but it seems that most of these designs are using the 4 box logo as a start. Why not use a grid pattern, or a compass rose, or something else as a base? Shouldn't it be completely original? Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location I used that 4 color design to show some kind of relationship to the currently used Geocaching/Groundspeak logo, and I like the other logos that people have come up with also using 4 colors. Using 4 colors like that is not original to Groundspeak either... BTW, I used the compass rose as a base and added the 4 colors. Groover
  3. quote:Originally posted by TeamJiffy:If Groundspeak objects to the '4 colors' usage, it is simple enough to replace with a wire-frame world! I don't see how they could. They took the idea from somewhere else consciously or subconsciously. Probably Microsoft Windows logo. Groover

I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that if the Captain says no, then you do not have a legal right to use it. Groover
  5. I love Terrain Navigator. I bought it after I went on a hike that was just a little too much for me. Being able to view the trail in 3D and produce profiles of the trail showed me what I had found out the hard way. So now I use it to gauge the difficulty of a hike, as well as finding new places to explore. Groover

  7. I've been using my Venture since last November, including in dense forest and in canyons, and the only time I've had real problems is when I've been in a canyon with dense forest. But then thats part of the challenge! Otherwise I love my Venture. I have noticed that it does help if you keep it horizontal (like on your shoulder on a shoulder strap). I'm sorry you've been having problems - maybe send it back to Garmin and ask for a replacement? Groover

  9. I tried using the lanyard on my Venture for a while but I found that while climbing rocks it would swing out, narrowly missing the rocks. So I bought the $15 Garmin eTrex Carrying Case, and it works much better. When I'm near the cache I can put the Venture on my belt and forget it is there. Its pretty rugged and also protects the screen from scratches. I found mine at Best Buy. Groover
  10. I've written a program that converts the .loc files from the Geocaching web site into a format that can be loaded into Terrain Navigator. I wrote it for my own use, and have decided to make it available as Charityware should anyone else would find it useful. Get it at: http://www.britishideas.com/gps/geotn Groover
  11. I must be doing something wrong, because when I tell my eTrex Venture (SW ver 2.31) to navigate a route, it always ignores the first waypoint in the route and tries to take me to the second waypoint - thats the second waypoint listed when I view all the waypoints for a route. So what am I doing wrong?? Groover
  12. I recently purchased Maptech's Terrain Navigator for Arizona and New Mexico and I think it is FANTASTIC! It is very powerful - so easy to use I didn't need the manual (a mark of good software in my opinion) - and has so many great features! You can download a free demo from Maptech's web site at www.maptech.com - so try it for yourself. Arizona and New Mexico is $150 and comes with 22 CDs - which shows you the level of detail you get. I haven't tried either of the other programs you mention so I cannot compare. But maybe they also have free demos to download and try? BTW, I'm not associated with Maptech in any way - just a very satisfied user. Groover
  13. Maybe Notepad has stopped working on your machine for some reason? Double-click on a text file on your machine and see if it opens Notepad and displays it. You may have to reinstall IE. Also check Microsoft's Knowledge Database here. Click on the first item - Search. Groover
  14. Take a look at our Dash for the Cash Cache. Its a film cannister, and although not hidden in a regular forest, it is hidden in a rocky Saguaro forest. We placed it off trail in such a way that only rocks have to be traversed to reach it. Also we wrote the description such that it is very easy to find once you get there and avoids the need for most people to hunt around tearing the place up. The reason we choose a film cannister was because of the subject of the cache. An ammo can or tupperware would not have been as suitable IMO. Groover

  16. Wow! Thanks for that URL (www.multimap.co.uk). I've always wanted Arial photos of where I used to live! Sorry for being off topic - if I was near Blackpool I would help look. Groover

  19. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish: Mostly folks who approve caches look at the text of the cache and the map generated on the page. At times there are 30+ in the queue, so some slip through. We do the best we can. We do rely a lot on the community to let us know when a cache is inappropriate. Suggestion: Have each cache approved by someone, then the approval checked by someone else to make sure it should have been approved. Then there would be less chance of these and other undesirable caches slipping through. Groover
  20. I also think they should remain archived. On the geocaching web site archived = no longer there or status unknown. Archiving the cache allows the log entries to remain. While the number of finds is not important to me, it is to some and deleting the cache would lower that number. Also deleting the caches will delete parts of geocachers finding history. I would never seek out an archived cache - I assume it isn't there, as that is often the reason caches are archived. Groover
  21. quote:Originally posted by VentureForth: Caches should NEVER, EVER, EVER be removed by anyone other than the original cache owner unless substantial efforts to contact them have failed. Only exception to this would be, of course, law enforcement. ...or if you are busy finding a cache and copper comes up to you and tells you to remove it. Groover
