  1. Sounds like a few folks need to come out to Missoua and try the 12 Step Program. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=28634 Some of us are Certified addicts! (and some are just working on it) -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 2. I watch the forums (from work) too much. There are a few MT folks who do read them regurly. We have a local group in Missoula called MOOG. Missoula is a pretty active area for caching. Kalispell has a few, including a web cam. Any chance you will be coming through Missoula? -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 3. I'm not sure if this is a bug but at the top of the screen where it says Hello XXXXXXX I get Hello Jennifer instead of Hello Jennifer&Dean. How does it know that I am online in teh forums and Dean isn't? AMAZING! The changes are happening as I watch! -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 4. I like Dogdoins (sp?) whose avatar is the fat man in a ballerina outfit. I sent that pic to a friend who make it a screen saver! 5. I edited out my snide remark from a prev post it wasn't something I should've put in. -Jen
  6. I'm sorry, I'm a bit quick on the defensive since the last time this came up in Missoula.... I ment for my post to say that while we "have worked with the local national Forest and have found them to be kind, helpful, and pretty OK with caching *they really were against anyone placing caches within Wilderness areas*. I should have added the *d part, but had to work and didn't reread my post and didn't want to edit it 3 hours later (after all the other editing of this thread!) I think I'll go home now. Too tired to think. -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 7. Of course they don't want us to. And I personally plan on abiding by their desire. Our caches may take you into a wilderness area, but the final cache will not be IN there. That is our opinion of how we will work within their desires. Others may place a multi starting at the trailhead, and ending inside the Wilderness. We will search for them. Just not place them ourselves. Joe was nice overall, just very uptight when the word wilderness was mentioned. I am no longer (I promise) going to interfere with anyone's placement of caches within wilderness. I take interest in the location of only the caches I place. -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 8. ROFL! Jeremy, can you create an off-topic area so folks can careen around outside of pure geocaching? As to this topic, I think is was just a trouble maker trying to get a response (see his postings on the Ventana Wilderness board). I have worked with the local national Forest and have found them to be kind, helpful, and pretty OK with caching. It seems that folks who have no understanding of geocaching get some pretty weird ideas. Just my opinion. -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 9. Welcome to the area by the way. If you are interested, the Missoula group is always willing to welcome new players. It is MOOG and can be found at: http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/moog Just join up and read the message boards to find out what is going on in our area. I also recommend reading the forums here to learn more about the sport. -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 10. It takes as long as two days for a cache to be approved. This lets the owners of the site confirm that the cache is located legally and conforms to the rules. Check your e-mail for any questions they may have. -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 11. http://www.geocaching.com/about/ The info you want is on the About geocaching page.At least the total is, I am uncertain how to find country by country stats. Have fun! -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 12. Thanks for all your opinions. I now feel more comfortable with planning a few caches outside the Missoula area. Logscaler- you thanks for the vote of confidence! We are looking forwards to visiting your caches at some point this summer. -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 13. It takes about two days to get approved and into the near caches... butif you tell me where it is, I'll run out and get it tonight! -Jennifer ************************************ According to his or her personal experience, each person must decide by himself or herself where they have been. 14. I agree, RK, that Montana is pretty open. I wouldn't want a lot more "tourist" caches here, but caches placed by folks who live close enough to take care of them is a differently colored horse. I also wouldn't place where there is current activity. Like in Bozeman or in Great Falls. But I was thinking more along the lines of a couple of neat areas on the way to them, that really aren't too near any current caches. As to maintenance, With my work schedule, I could do cache maintenance within a week of hearing about a cache problem. And we would disable it immediately if there was a problem. I'd online enough to watch for that! -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  15. Some folks teach their kids martial arts. Some teach boxing/fighting. Some teach shooting. At least we have the right to teach and learn. If you don't know about something, than you may have unfounded beliefs about it. We have found knives in caches, and thought it was pretty cool to do so. But we are confortable around them. Others may not have been exposed to enough of the world to feel responsible with knives,(guns, dental floss, etc) and shouldn't be expected to be confortable finding them in caches. I guess this means I get to keep the awesome little pocket knife we had planned on placing. Good for me, I need a new one. -Jennifer PS- I learned shooting and knife throwing at 11 and have been comfortable with guns and knives since then. I know folks who were never exposed to guns and who freak out when they see people carrying them (unconcealed) in Montana. Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  16. Close your eyes and count to 100 while I hide this cache! *************************** This game is gonna take Iraq by storm! We gotta get all the units playing! -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  17. To explain: We have family and in-laws scattered around Montana. We go to Great Falls, Chester (don't look for it on a map, it is too small) and Bozeman fairly often. The Question: How far from home is considered a tourist cache? If we place in Cascade, Mt (near grandma's house) would we get hollered at for placing a "vacation" cache. It is 3.5 hours away, but we visit that area at least once every 2 months. Who says "vacation" and who says "reasonable"? When turning in the cache for approval should we state that the area is in our regular travels? -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  18. Ron! I've also contacted the owner, he did write me back, but I can't remember his reason for not changing it to coords that don't take you over the cliff. *irony* Vacation cache upkeep and response seems to be a recurring problem in the Great Falls area. I keep an eye on Rainbow Kisser so I can move the correct fomula up higher in the logs whenever it passes to the next page... it would be SO much easier if that owner would just update his page... Just waiting for that cache to float away, like Missouri River Breaks did! -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  19. Thanks Mopar, I had wondered if that is what he ment. I've slogged through my share of reeds, just didn't know their real name. -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  20. A little off topic- I am not an expert on ticks, but have recently attended a lecture series about the Bubonic Plague. It is passed by fleas via regurgitation. Essentially, the plague makes the blood in it's guts coagulate and the flea starts starving to death. So it starts jumping from animal to animal to person trying to get some sustenance. Every time it bites, it gets a little blood, but cannot ingest it and instead ends up throwing it back up into the wound. That is how fleas spread the plague. So you can't say that bugs can't barf. I am uncertain about the transferral mechanism behind tick diseases, but since, like fleas, they bite for blood, I would guess that they would have no problem throwing up if they had to. A local lab is doing Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever research here and is always on the lookout for locally captured ticks. Also, in Montana there is a unknown disease that is being transmitted through tick bites. It is simliar to RMSF but not as prevalent. Not that RMSF is prevalent, it is rare, but the symptoms are such I do not wish it on anyone. I will continue using the CDC's recommendations for tick removal. Timely topic, picked one off me a week ago after wandering through a local forest. -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  21. Wow! Those are some tough thorns. And Brian, what are Phra??? (I can't spell it), vegetative I would guess but I am unsure if I know what they are. Our worst day was last Sept when we destroyed the oil pan of a rental car while attempting a step of the 12 Step Program. We did get the step, but we had to hike 2.5 miles to get to the nearest phone. We hadn't gotten the rental insurance and had to pay for the fix and the towing. Next time we will rent a tougher vehicle, and get the insurance. The rental car was due to our regular car's transmission going out- worn out from too much caching- and not actually for caching with. -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  22. You get used to the stares. It is the folks who start asking questions and looking for what you are looking for that always weird me out. *hint* don't cache in a long black trenchcoat! Especially in an airport or other "secure" area. This seems to get folks worried. One step in a Montana cache is in the display case at the airport! And the display case isn't the easiest location to find unless you ask for help. Always explain yourself to the guys with guns. -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  23. If it helps, We have two coin exchange caches, Chronological Progression and Chronological Regression. When the coins in one get too old, we will move them to the other, and vice versa. So far, so good. Currently there is a 1927 nickel in Regression! We set them up with several different coins so there would be a variety of dates. -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
  24. Congrats Cowper! That took a little planning I am sure. Last Labor Day weekend we hit SD, WY and CO in one day! It was a blast. We are currently planning our drive from MT to NM, and choosing the caches worth hitting onthat drive! -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. 25. It'll be one of the only 4*/4* virtual webcam caches in existance! It would have to be rated at least that to account for all the paperwork you would need to even get to it's location, and the altitude accilimatization would be pretty tough. Can you imagine the long distnace bill you'd get, calling the states to get someone to take your picture! Not quite worth the $$$$$. I'd rather spend that on getting a few caches near home, like in Hawaii or Chicago! -Jennifer Where am I going? I ain't certain. When will I get there? I don't know. All as I know is I am on my way!
