  1. there's stuff you can get from a pharmacy over the counter - magnesium sulphate paste that can be dabbed on and left to draw out things that need to come out. The paste won't make anything hurt anymore than it does already and saves the need for poking and prodding. Might need to be on overnight under a plaster for full effect
  2. thanks for these we're away for the weekend at the end of the month in North Norfolk, will definitely check out the Sheringham Park series as they're very close
  3. thanks for all the comments the route won't be possible for buggies as the off road bits are a bit too off roady and have stiles. As for juggling the gps and the dog lead, I hadn't thought of that (we lost our dog this spring before we started caching, feels odd to be out walking in the country without her ) I think I'll aim not to have the caches on the offroad bits rather than next to the road, that way the gps can be in a pocket while next to the road off to sort out some containers now
  4. I had written a very long waffly post explaining the background, but then reconsidered and figured you'd get bored before the end so, in short.... I'd like to set up our first caches and am planning a themed cache series based on a local village. We like doing circular walks, as we've done a couple and found them fun. However the public footpaths are just not in the right places! in order to make up the circle, some of the walk would be on the road (mostly yellow roads on os map, but with grassy verges in places). Would having part of a circular walk on the road put you off doing the cache series? the roads can be viewed on google street view, so people could check it out before visiting. thanks
  5. I've bought my first travel bug today so we can play too Just need to decide how to make the snail now then! do they all start from the same place? or do we just release them where we are?
  6. just found this thread after seeing the snail one. I've got to ask which chicken won?! and how far did they travel?
  7. ah ha! I was about to post to say I had logged out and logged back in again, but thought it couldn't hurt to try again and look! it's fixed Before I posted before I'd logged out and in, but of the bit where you log caches, not this bit! thanks very much
  8. Hi, not sure where to ask this, so starting here! when I first registered I used the name bumpybecky (same as everywhere else online) but when we started actively gcing this summer I changed my account to Dave's Piglings (the kids chose, don't ask!). When I visit the forum pages the box up there ^ on the right says bumpybecky, my posts show as bumpybecky, but I've not got an avatar and it doesn't say I'm a premium member. When I click on my profile and when I log caches, it's showing as Dave's piglings, I've got the avatar and it shows the premium membership thing. I've tried logging out and back in and it makes no difference. I changed the account name over a month ago now I think, so it's not a recent thing. How can I get my forum profile to be the same as my other one? I'd like everything to say Dave's Piglings and have the avatar thanks in advance for any suggestions
  9. thanks for the recommendation we're very near Dunbstable Downs and haven't visited these caches yet. Having another gpsr might help with some of the normal arguing too!
  10. can't be badgers, they're about <---------------------------------------------------------------------> this big aren't they?! I think it's gruffalos
  11. I started as bumpybecky - this is the name I've used everywhere else online for the last 12 years. When I first used it I was very pregnant and called Becky. I'm still called Becky but the bump is now 11! That's the name that still come sup on the forums, but my caching profile and the name we use for log books is Dave's Piglings. It's very odd having a different username after all these years! It was my children's choice of name, chosen on the way to our first cache. We wanted something that we all felt happy using, rather than my user name. Dave is the name of our youngest's cuddly toy and 'piglings' comes from one of the famous five books, chosen our 6 year old daughter who loves pigs and the famous five. On my profile there's a picture of Dave and one of the piglings, with their human companions!
  12. I've been looking at this today too - after staring at the pages for a couple near me that are baffling! I've done a PQ to find the unsolved ones, hope the link works...
  13. that's exactly the situation I'm in - not only are the GC codes very similar (only 7th digit differs), the names are too. They go from Woburn Animal Series - 1) Black Bear, through a variety of animals to Woburn Animal Series - 15) Ape GSAK has abbreviated them to Wobur1 to Wobur9 then Wobu10 to Wobu15. Not wonderful, but much faster and more accurate than typing in 15 sets manually! We'd better find them tomorrow after all this!
  14. thinking about it, I can see your point! A name, even if abbreviated, is easier to remember than a code. I guess GSAK knew what I really wanted, even if I didn't
  15. I do normally use pocket queries, but for some reason didn't today as it was only a few. Would that have helped with the naming thing though? I's still only have 6 characters to play with... I have got GSAK to rename them all as 6 characters using the smart names. It's not exactly what I wanted but will work ok. thanks for the help
  16. We want to do a series of caches that have very similar gc codes. There are 15 in the series and they all start GC192D? (where only the ? varies). When I download the co-ordinates to my GPS (one at a time from the cache pages) I'm fairly sure that they are overwriting each other so only the last one inputted is there Is there anyway of removing the GC bit before they download? as then there would be enough characters to keep them all individual Or is there any other way around it that doesn't involve me typing them all in manually? Also I'm using a Garmin Geko 201 lent by a friend. When we buy our own GPS, do more modern versions still have this issue? or do they allow longer names for waypoints? thanks
  17. I've got a happy tale I passed my driving test in March this year (it's taken me over 20 years to learn!) and before this week had only been on the motorway once, with my husband in the passenger seat reassuring me. This week I've taken my two youngest children on a road trip (older two are at guide camp, otherwise we'd not all have fitted in the car). We've done 432.9 miles, from Bedfordshire to Devon, via Gloucestershire and we survived! We managed 7 caches on our travels, have dropped off two geocoins and picked up two more. We visited our first puzzle cache and managed a webcam cache too We took my Mum out on a big walk round Exmouth and she found one of the caches before the kids! My Dad came with us to the puzzle one, he walked there, despite the fact he has rather limited mobility, as it was so close to home. We had an excellent trip
  18. I've got the same problem - no caches showing on the large map. They're there on the small map on the cache page, but not when you look at the whole screen beta one. The caches were there a few hours ago and I'm fairly sure I've not toggled anything! I'm running Chrome on XP
  19. well funnily enough, Exmouth is where we're going my parents live there so we visit every summer. I'll have to look up your seafront cache
  20. Well after reading all your replies, I was set to retrieve the coin and thought maybe one of the motorway caches on the M5 or the hotel in Exeter would be a good destination only someone picked it up yesterday so we were too late! We did manage to collect the other local coin this evening. That one just wants to travel, so we'll take it to the seaside in Devon thanks for all the replies
  21. hello I have had a quick look in the geocoins sub forum, but got all confused as it wasn't very newbie friendly, so I thought I'd ask here instead! There's a geocoin in a cache very near to home that I've visited already. Is it ok to revisit the cache to retrieve the coin knowing that I'm off to the other side of the country in a week's time so can move it somewhere it's not been before? The geocoin page says it's mission is to visit every cache in the USA before coming back to the UK, only it's not left England yet! It hasn't yet been to Devon which is where we're off to. thanks for the advice Becky
