  1. I still use my GPS most of the time - not my phone. I get more accurate results on the GPS. If by chance I am in a place that I didn't prepare for, then I go to the on-the-fly caching with the phone. I also use pay as you go data. Even then, sometimes I just get the info out of the phone, and type it into the GSP because of the accuracy issue. Also consider where you cache -- some of the places I like to cache do not have cell coverage.
  2. I've always revisited caches -For tb movement, for helpful maintenance, or just because I am in the area. Even before we had the limit of one find per cache, I never double logged them -- I just logged a note that I was there again and what I did.
  3. There is a macro you can use in GSAK that will help you plan a route for a set of caches.
  4. I did receive one this month, so they are still being awarded. As for when I might actually have it, that is yet to be determined.
  5. Sounds fun, but probably a challenge because the lego pieces are always going to be missing so the next finder is unable to complete. I think a 2 stage with all the pieces in the first stage, assemble it, and it gives coordinates to the final stage might work better. That way the pieces can stay where they are supposed to be.
  6. Remember too, all of the attributes have a positive and a negative to them -- click again and you turn 24/7 into not 24/7, for example.
  7. +Premium Members 67 618 posts Report post Posted Thursday at 10:30 AM I'll have to try this, practice on my extra log that came with the nanos. I've even thought of cutting the log in half (my log, not others) and rolling it up. Then replace with the other half when the log is filled with signatures. I'll look forward to your experience. My thought is that you will never get it folded small enough.
  8. I think the takeaway here is that it is okay to have cache containers in a cache as swag, but that the cache listing cannot be for the purpose of or encourage people to place new caches.
  9. Unless it has changed, I'm pretty sure the author does get a notification if their log is deleted, I have received them in the past. But I don't know about if just a picture is deleted. It is always nice to contact the person and ask them to fix it (whether a log or a photo) before taking the delete option.
  10. I think the plant aspect is okay, but do you really want people to get poked by a cactus? Have you read the guidelines? Your bigger issues are always going to be permission, and proximity to other geocaches.
  11. That is not unusual at all. Many geocachers make their first find(s) before they have an account. Especially if another geocacher introduces them to the game.
  12. Maybe not understanding the situation. Not a didnt find it, and not a throwdown. Sounds like a non PMO finding a PMO cache and logging it -- that is perfectly allowed.
  13. Currently irked by multis that are broken. So many are broken that it makes me avoid all multis. One was a 6 stage multi, the item at the 4th stage was no longer there and therefore crashed the sequence. One was a 2 stage multi, and the signage had been removed. I was able to google the answers, but that would be more of a puzzle than a multi. Another one with a sign that had been removed. Another one that was poorly written, again using signage -- this time it was a 'loop and spur' type trail. The tasks required counting the letters on the 1st sign, second sign, etc. But there was no way to know which direction I approached the trail .... And again, some of the signs had been damaged. Multis take more work to maintain! Check the stages, not just the final! Update the page if things change!
  14. Oops, I meant this for the irk thread, but it also kinda works here.

  16. Favorites are whatever your favorite happens to be. I like pumpkin pie -- some people prefer apple or something else. I do give favorite points out, but not frequently, and I have lots left if I wanted to give them out. For me, it has to be an almost perfect cache -- one strike and you wont get that favorite point. Good parking nearby. Possibly noted on the cache page. A nice walk to the cache, and/or a nice scenic view. Good container, usually large enough to hold a TB. Page is well written, D/T/size/attributes are accurate, and hint matches hide. So for me, that mostly means a nice walk in the woods or a park -- not an urban micro. I have occasionally given a point to a clever container or hide, but my 'favorites' are really those that meet the criteria above.
  17. Picked one out that wasnt too far away, but my weekend was just busy and I didn't get to get out there.
  18. Not surprisingly, I need more of those dangerous cliffs / falling rocks, probably T4 to boot. Not surprising, as a solo cacher I often avoid dangerous areas.
  19. Mine is a 7. He indulges and tolerates my hobby. He will help if it is running slow, and there is a beer at the end after getting the cache. We can stop and get a state (hopefully a quick one), but too many stops such as every rest area or every county is pushing it. He is happier if I pick virtuals or earthcaches without the hunt and possibly with a photo opportunity.
  20. I had thought to go out on Sunday and get a bunch of caches ... now I will probably limit myself to 1 to save the others. <NEGATIVE EFFECT> As a long time cacher, there are very few left 'close to home', so each trip is a bit longer. And this is the third promotion in a row. Every now and then they can be fun, but this is getting overdone. Just let me go cache on my own whim.
  21. Of course, it can be a dual (or more) and legitimate purpose: 1.) The organizer gets a new country in their profile; 2.) There is the opportunity to meet other cachers -- either from the same ship, another ship also in port, or any other local geocachers that might want to attend. Of the ones that I know of, most of the time, someone other than the organizer has turned up, and it ended up being a small but worthwhile event.
  22. On the damaged/lost caches: Contact the cache owner, and apologetically explain what happened. Offer to replace or repair the cache for them if you are able. The cache owner will probably want to disable the cache at least until the issue has been addressed. On your friends: Take it for what it is, your friends are not interested in this game. Don't push it on them. Go with the theory that muggles exist and it is not up to you to convert them. Attend some events and make some new friends that are already familiar with geocaching.
  23. Looking forward to meeting you at an event soon then -- I'm also in the Dayton area. We have a pretty nice group of people around here.
  24. ETA the previous comment was: I've been planning on including estimated values of the items included and specifying in the listing that anything taken must be replaced with something of equal or greater value. Trade even or trade up is now considered an ALR?
