  1. Don't forget that you'd also be re-using the trackable pages, complete with all the existing logs and travelled distance. Personally, I think it would be a better idea to start with fresh trackables so each child can customize the trackable and start on an even playing field (I know this isn't a competition, but the children will probably take pride in how far their trackable has travelled; giving some kids a bigger head-start than others may not go over well). I know you said money is an issue, but I'm sure you'd be able to find some local cachers who would be willing to donate for such a cause. Thanks, I didn't take into consideration the mileage. I think your right. New tags are the way to go. What do you think about starting with a new tag and if... when the TB goes missing re-release it for the same person with the same page? Yep, that would be fine. Just don't be too hasty to rerelease them, sometimes TBs can be slow moving, but not yet lost. As for your project, how many bugs are you trying to get? I might donate a few to your project. (PS, I recommend looking for the sale items in the Groundspeak shop, sometimes there are some less expensive ones)
  2. I couldn't say, but I imagine a lost TB basically never resurfaces. But the question is this: if it did happen, wouldn't you love to see it cleanly expressed in the logs? I would, so I'll go out and buy a second TB rather than reuse the one for the TB that's lost and risk not realizing that a miracle has happened. So I'm wondering: TBs go missing all the time. When the second one disappears, will you launch a 3rd? Or a 10th? At some point don't you say "I think I've launched this TB number enough times"? If so, then I'd say launching it just once is the logical number. Yes, I'll launch a 3rd or a 10th time. I want to see more travel bugs traveling the world, and these numbers are already paid for and available and last forever, so I keep re-releasing them as needed. I also buy new ones and release as well, so it gets even more TBs out in the wild.
  3. Deleting a log does not remove the action, nor mileage. It's especially problematic if the TB was logged into Inventories (cache or cacher), since deletion then messes up other players lists. You may ask in the Help Center: http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=request Deleting a log and then doing a 'Recalculate Mileage' should fix the mileage issue. If your TB has been moved and discovered by other players, I would be reluctant to delete those logs. The player will lose the credit for moving your bug. They will also receive an email indicating that the log was deleted, and they will wonder about that. If they are your own logs that you are deleting, have at it -- but you will receive and email about each log that you delete.
  4. Some numbers/letters look very similar. Try some other combinations and see if you find it that way. Try taking a picture of the number and magnifying the picture, or use a magnifying glass. O and 0 (letter O vs number 0) 1 and l and I and even 7 (number 1, letter l, or letter I, even number 7) B and 8 (letter B and number 8) S and 5 (letter S and number 5) 2 and Z (number 2 and letter Z) C and G (letters C and G)
  5. If the code hasn't shown up for a year or more, it probably is not going to. I reuse codes all the time when I feel they are truly missing, and I haven't yet had one reappear. If it does, it is not really a big deal. The mileage might seem funny, there might be a tug of war. Contact the cacher with the 'copy' and ask them to take it out of play. Easily handled.
  6. Sure. I truly have no idea that there is anything illicit behind it. I would guess that it is hidden in the dirt. Or a little boy named Sanchez likes to play in the dirt. Or maybe its just nonsense. It could only be something nasty if you perceive it that way, and then the problem is on you.
  7. No. Make sure the box at the top of your page where it says 'This cache is in place and ready to be reviewed' (or whatever the text says) or the button that says 'Submit for Review;', click on that so that it is in the reviewer's queue.
  8. Sounds cool. How about an Android version?
  9. Mathematically, considering a spherical body, if I make any polygon, and color one part red and the other part green. Say that the red part covers 25% of the globe, then the green part covers 75% of the globe. But since it is a sphere, then there is no reason to assume that the 25% is 'inside' and the 75% is 'outside' is there? The same polygon is a boundary for both parts. Therefore, everyone that makes any polygon, would qualify for the challenge -- and any 3 points define a polygon.
  10. Different approach -- attend the event, and encourage your other geocaching buddies to do the same. Educate the newbies on geocaching -- rehiding, trading, trackables, etc. Thank the park system for their efforts, but gently mention to them that the flyers will go out of date, the coordinates might change, caches get archived ... so they shouldn't put them in the hard copy.
  11. This is what happened with me. the first three went through fine next four exploded eating my data. I actually received a message stating I had almost used up my data plan which limited my caching for the day You could go old-school and just log when you get home
  12. While you are not out of line, I don't think you will reach an audience that can help you here. You are taking the right steps with trying to track down who might have moved it. Just be sure to be nice when you contact people. Since you are local, you can check the cache and see. If you want help, you might want to involve your local caching community -- perhaps they have a facebook page or something? If you want some other help, try the TB Rescue on project-gc and there might be someone that can look for your area.
  13. I couldn't do that on our cruise, as the Garmin will only show caches in a 100km (?100mi) radius..... That's just in the list. If you pan the map to the relevant location, you should be able to see the caches. Yes, but panning out across the ocean to New Zealand was a hassle! Especially with the Oregon screen.... You also can use the search feature and part of the cache name.
  14. I also thought the 'pushed into the ground' was against the guidelines. Has that been changed again recently?
  15. IMO, in general, it is bad practice to delete any logs on the cache. They are the history of the cache, it is what it is. (Exceptions made for errorneous/bogus logs, or particularly profane logs). Remember that when you are deleting a log, you are really archiving and hiding it, it remains in the database and can still be seen by administrators.
  16. Not dead -- I want mine to keep on traveling. I need to update the pages though to make that clear.
  17. If people are confirming the cache is gone, then why are they allowing the next posts to be "Found it" logs to begin with? I've heard reviewers can now delete found it logs, do we know if this is true or not? Maybe they don't because people like quoting the "Found it = didn't find it" It wouldn't be the reviewer's job to do it. It could be the cache owner's job to do it, but since they haven't bothered to fix the cache, they probably won't bother to worry about the logs either.
  18. Sounds to me like he is running a script that tries series' of trackable numbers and logs the ones that it finds. Not really geocaching, huh? Sorry that it hit your bugs. You are allowed to delete bogus logs.
  19. I expect you will get an email, that contains a snippet of html. You can then edit your profile and include the html snippet, and the badge will be on your profile.
  20. I got the impression that this kind of cache wasn't grandfathered. At least, I seem to recall some challenge cache pages that say the cache originally required asking for coordinates, but they were forced to change it. And this example shows us exactly why. I know that geocaches of a type that have been grandfathered (virtuals, webcams) can't be adopted, but since a challenge caches isn't a specific cache type, could this one be adopted? I believe challenge caches can be adopted. But if the CO is not responding, it doesn't seem they would initiate an adoption either.
  21. The CO shouldn't be holding the coordinates hostage, they should be on the cache page or derivable without you needing to contact the cache owner.
  22. Depending on the time you have: In Brussels: GC42JCM traditional GC4X3EZ traditional GC7F9C traditional Spa Francorchamps: GCG0GQ Virtual If you have a car and have the time there's GC40 (oldest on mainland Europe, 2nd oldest European cache) Thanks! I'll make sure those are on the list!
  23. Where are you going in Belgium? When I got one in Brussels a few years ago I DNFd the first two I tried. If all my travel plans for the next year pan out I hope to get my 30th country and 5th continent while visiting Australia next June. Brussels, and Spa.
  24. Hopefully they wont get taken. Hide them carefully. Should make a nice cache.
