  1. Thanks! He's actually coming along quite well and should hopefully be home next week. Caching shouldn't be too long after that.
  2. That's great! I go caching a lot with my Father too. I'm 18 and he's 50, so I tend to get around a bit better than he does. Our neighbor across the street (Great guy and I consider him my grandfather) who is 84 had quadruple by-pass heart surgery 27 years goes caching with us sometimes too. He's upset now though. He just had another double by-pass surgery and wants to get out caching with us again. Hopefully you get to have more fun with your father while caching!
  3. simply genereate & Download a Pocket Querie, unzip the GPX files and place them on the 62s in the directory /garmin/GPX This would be the easiest way. You can get more elaborate and open these pocket queries into GSAK, which you can use to do seemingly unlimited things, then transfer the pocket query to your gps.
  4. Thanks. I've wondered why the 't' models were able to handle the entire country map and the non 't' models cant. Do you have any experience with the 't' models? Like does having the entire map slow down the boot screen or slow down the loading of the map on the map screen? I've built the several different maps out of the entire country because of this problem.
  5. Hi all I have a gpsmap62s. I would like to transfer all of Canada to my GPS and all of USA topo maps to my gps, much like the 62st, oregon 450t, etc. Has anyone done this? I know that I could just get a larger MicroSD card, but I'd like to set up my gps like the 62st, 450t etc. Thanks
  6. Since I've loaded 3.0 I've put 5 or 6 PQs on my 62s. It hasn't frozen while loading them yet. Although I only updated the system the other day, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't freeze anymore.
  7. I never thought about Garmin customer support. It's fixed though. When I first got the unit I copied everything off the unit onto my computer. I put this original file back onto the GPS, then updated to the most current version. I know what was causing it now too. When I first loaded the PQ and turned the GPS on it froze at the loading waypoints bar, I turned the GPS off and it messed up the gpx file. Anyways thanks for replies. Hopefully it doesn't happen anymore while on my trip. (I'm in Eastern Washington State BTW).
  8. I've had my 62s since January with little problems. Today when I would click on the cache description it would freeze, the screen would go blank and nothing would happen until I take the batteries out and put them back in. Pressing the keys for a hard reset does not work. Now when I turn the device on, I get the black screen where it says GARMIN in the middle then at the bottom it says "Loading is complete press any key to continue". Now I've pressed every key on the system and nothing works. It freezes here now and wont come back? I can't take it back to MEC because I'm in the States for two weeks on a caching trip and I only just got here yesterday. Anyone have this happen to them or have any suggestions? Thanks
  9. Yes this is frustrating. I've given up on using the meter to let me know how much battery I have left. My watch has 3 stopwatch/timers so I have one set that is roughly the life on one set of batteries. When the timer is getting low (usually below 1 hour) I'll switch out my batteries for another fully charged set and reset the timer.
  10. I have energizer rechargeable batteries and they last forever. My 62s can easily get 4 days out of 2 batteries with the gps on for 6-8 hours at a time. I think a lot of it has to do with the settings in the gps( track up/north up, screen brightness/screen saver, and even if your gps is set up for the type of batteries you are using. It also depends on where you are too, I know when I'm in the deep woods and have my backlight on full the batteries will die faster. On another note, most times I leave the back light off and if you angle the gps just right the sunlight will make the screen brighter than if the backlight was on full. Hope some of this helps.
  11. The worst thing I found was a small pocket knife and a lighter in a cache designed for kids. I was FTF and this shocked me when I found it. I took both the items, emailed the cache owner, who didn't really seem to understand why it was such a bad idea to put a knife and lighter in a geocache designed for kids.
  12. Just a suggestion. It may or may not work, What if you bought something cheap with similar battery connectors and just took out the battery connectors and used them in your GPS? Again i'm not sure if this would work or is even possible, but I thought I'd mention it. Good luck fixing your device.
  13. that's assuming the missing notification in the beta isn't just a bug... Well I'm assuming that it's not a bug.
  14. never thought of that. /sigh I guess i'll just wait for the beta to be finalized then get rid of it. thanks
  15. My Oregon when geocaching will beep and a screen will pop up saying 'Arriving at destination'. However, this happens at seemingly random points. I can be still 100m+ plus from the cache and it will tell me i'm there (usually when driving), but it will also happen again when I am closer (walking) to the cache (~10m). Could anyone tell me why this is and if there is a way to change it or turn it off? Thanks
  16. I have one and I really like it. I don't find the screen all that bad. I have never found the screen to be any harder to read than the screen of my Colorado 300. The touch screen is a nice feature, and the size is prefect IMO. I don't have any problems with it, so no cons for me.
  17. I feel that I should comment because less than a week ago I was trying to decide between a 62s and an oregon 450. I did quite a lot of research and ended up buying both, then taking the 62s back. Here's why 1. I didn't really like the antenna sticking up. 2. The Oregon continually got satellites faster, held them better and had better reception. 3. The case started making the 'squeak' noise which worried me. 4. With gloves on, I found it hard to use the buttons. The gloves I had on weren't thick either. 5. Personally I like the screen of the 450. I found it much more readable than the 62s. 6. The Oregon fit in my hand a lot better, is smaller, and looks better. # 5 and 6 are my personal opinions. If you don't agree, don't flame me. You have your opinions and I have mine. Also this was a deciding factor - Wherigo. I really want to get into those, and the 62s can't do them. chgiude
  18. When I got my SD card for my Colorado, it was a top-of-the-line card. It was supposed to be better than the one in my 1280p HD camera. It wasn't; the memory card worked as good as any 'normal' SD card, the maps didn't load any faster. I ended up taking it back and getting a bigger, slower SD card.
  19. Ok, thanks everyone, I guess it's a 20 then, just because I don't need the features it has no doesn't mean that I would need them in the future.
  20. Hi all, I had a Colorado 300 and loved it, unfortunately it broke, I also have a Etrex Legend, which is great other than I 'need' to go paperless when I cache now. I now have to get a new unit and I was thinking about getting a Dakota 10/20. Could someone who has experience with both briefly compare/contrast the dakota with the Etrex and Colorado for me? Also is the Dakota 20 worth the extra money? I never have more than 200 geocaches on my system, so I don't need the MicroSD slot, but are the other features it has over the Dakota 10 worth it? Thanks Chris(CanadianDakine)
  21. I never thought of that. Opps! Also did you mean " Several traditionals on several islands might be more apealing"? thanks
  22. Hi everyone, I am still new to the forums and think this is the right category; if not sorry! Anyways, around where I live there are quite a few lakes with some islands in them. I would like to place a multi cache on some of these islands and over different yet close lakes. The caches aren't going to be all that hard to find once you are on the selected islands, however you will need a boat of some sort to get to the islands. I have looked in my area at other caches which require boats, and they all have a terrain rating of 5, and a high difficulty rating (3.5+). I would like some input on what other cachers think this should be rated difficulty and terrain wise. Thanks!
  23. Sorry for posting this..I just went to my PQ page and saw the my finds tab...UGHH
  24. Hi I would like to create a my finds PQ so I can use the GSAK stats ceator for my profile. If I try to create a finds pq the same way I would a normal pq then I only return 255 caches, which are the ones that I have found in Nova Scotia, I have found more on the west coast of the US, in washington idaho and oregon. So is there a special way to create the my finds pq or am i just stupidly missing something obvious. Thanks
