  1. Okay, I'm using the Geo.com app on my iPhone. I've just started this activity, thinking for years that it would be a lot of fun. What I have found so far is that (1) I do not have a very high IQ, and (2) I have no clue when it comes to puzzles. I have done the puzzles 101 training.... which only left me far more confused than when I started. So, here's an example and I'm wondering if someone could give me a walkthrough on this? It will always be a DNF for me, since I could never feel okay about claiming to find something I didn't find completely on my own. The geocache details is GC37G0H (I have no idea what those numbers mean, btw, so we could there with my edumacation!). It is called Eye of the Hurricane and is in the Issaquah Highlands (Issaquah WA). Smart people up here and they just may be too smart for this dimwit. Spoilers ahead.... It has a puzzle and uses the words "silly math" which I think has some significance, but darned if I know what. The literal definition of silly math is nonsense math. In other words, no math at all. Despite that, I tried to solve this with..... real math. A = 8 B = 21 C = 47 D = 84 E = 94 F = 2 I worked through the puzzle and what I came up with was 47. 32. and then the next is shaky at best, since they don't say if you should add A and D together or just run them straight out. So it's either 884 or it's 92. The second coordinate is 122.00.594 those numbers take me far, far away from here and I'm pretty certain that's not it. Anyone have a clue on this thing? I'm about to give up on geocaching all together, I'm beginning to think that geocaching is only for those with PhDs in astrophysics!
  2. You don't specify which app/platform you are using. 3. I'd just point out that I probably fall into that "muggle" category, perhaps with a few qualifiers. Everyone has to start somewhere. I got the free app and after finding one very easy cache (with the help of one very understanding CO), I bought the premium. Now I have a question about finding groups to tag along with and learn the ropes AND whether or not something like a Magellan Explorist GC is essential to my success and the total experience. What I'm saying is, it's easy to blanket condemn something, but that app is also a gateway into a fun, challenging, and mind-opening activity. Everyone has to start somewhere and most will do so responsibly. There are always those who will step out into the alpine meadows despite signs and those who leave a trail of dead (something) behind them wherever they go. But that's the world we live in!
  4. Really new to this and have very little background in GPS/maps. I have found four very easy caches so far. I have two questions: 1. Is there a group(s) in the greater Seattle area that someone can join to get a sense of the "ropes" of this activity? 2. I am using the .com app (very nice), but a particular cache I have been trying to get is a coordinates-based multi. I don't see anywhere to enter coordinates into the app, so I tried my motion-x app. My question is this: is having an actual GPS critical to success in geocaching?
